style=' '  loading='lazy' />

As the incoming vice president of technical services at ARMA, Estes is dedicated to supporting asphalt roofing manufacturers and advancing the technical performance of asphaltic materials.

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) has named Heather Estes as its new vice president of technical services, effective April 13, 2026.

As vice president of technical services, Estes will serve as ARMA’s primary technical voice, assuring that asphalt roofing is accurately, equitably and appropriately represented in all scientific and technical discussions about residential and commercial roofing applications. She will manage all of ARMA’s technical-related activities and will also serve as the association’s technical liaison to organizations involved in the development of building standards.

“Heather is an excellent addition to ARMA’s leadership team,” said Reed Hitchcock, ARMA executive vice president. “Her experience with the organization and the industry will bring valuable perspective, insight and energy to our technical capabilities.”

Heather Estes is a technical leader with over 15 years of experience spanning the full lifecycle of roofing materials — from the laboratory to the manufacturing floor. A career "asphalt nerd" with an M.S. in chemistry from UNC-Wilmington, Estes began in forensic analysis, specializing in the chemistry of material failure.

She has spent the subsequent phase of her career bridging the gap between research and real-world application, championing durability and resiliency standards while mastering the complexities of manufacturing and product development. This unique perspective — combining hands-on testing, R&D and regulatory strategy — allows her to serve as a comprehensive technical advocate for the industry.

As the incoming vice president of technical services at ARMA, Estes is dedicated to supporting asphalt roofing manufacturers and advancing the technical performance of asphaltic materials. When she isn't advancing industry codes and standards, she is at home with her family, enjoying life's adventures with her husband, their son and their dogs.

“I have long admired ARMA’s commitment to technical excellence through my various industry roles, and I am honored to now lead those efforts from within,” Estes said. “Asphalt is in my DNA, and I am excited to advocate for the manufacturers who drive this industry forward, building on the phenomenal foundation Aaron Phillips has built over the years.”

Estes will work closely with the current vice president of technical services, Aaron Phillips, through his departure at the end of June to ensure a smooth transition of ARMA’s technical activities. ARMA will also continue to rely on the expertise and engagement of volunteers from its member companies to help advance the association’s technical initiatives.

Additionally, Hitchcock recognized Phillips for the legacy he built during his tenure with the association.

“Aaron has played an important role in advancing ARMA’s mission and ensuring asphalt roofing is well represented in key technical and regulatory conversations since joining the team in 2020,” Hitchcock said. “He has helped elevate ARMA’s technical voice across the industry while building strong relationships with partner organizations and stakeholders. We are grateful for his contributions and the lasting impact he has made on the association and the industry.”

Under Phillips’ leadership, ARMA has established a new standard for technical advocacy, engagement and education on behalf of ARMA members, while also working with ARMA’s professional staff to formalize internal processes and procedures.

The contractor’s role in asphalt shingle recycling and sustainability

Discussions from the 2025 ARMA Recycling Forum highlighted the growing role contractors play in sustainability, recycling and long-term roof performance.

As conversations around sustainability, recycling and circularity continue to grow in the construction industry, roofing contractors increasingly find themselves at the center of the discussion. The 2025 ARMA Virtual Roofing Recycling Forum hosted by the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) brought together researchers, manufacturers, trade associations and sustainability experts to explore where the industry is today and where it’s headed.

While the technical details are still evolving, three clear takeaways emerged that will benefit you as sustainability expectations continue to evolve.

1 – Contractors are the key connector in roofing sustainability

One of the strongest messages from the forum was the role contractors already play, and will continue to play, as the go-between for the entire roofing ecosystem. You sit at the intersection of building owners, manufacturers, designers, general contractors and local jurisdictions, all of whom influence how a roof is specified, installed, maintained and ultimately removed.

From a recycling and sustainability standpoint, this puts you in a unique position. Most contractors are focused on delivering the roof the customer needs, on time and on budget. But as local regulations increase, disposal costs rise and sustainability expectations vary by region, you are often the ones navigating restrictions, liability concerns and logistical challenges.

The forum emphasized that this role can be viewed as a risk, or an opportunity. When you understand the basics of recycling options, durability, repairability and waste reduction, you are better positioned to guide owners through informed decisions. In many cases, simply being able to explain what is and is not available locally already adds value. Education is the first step.

2 – Recycling is market-driven, local and uneven, but growing

Recycling of asphalt roofing materials is not advancing evenly across the U.S., and while national recycling rates have fluctuated, local and regional programs are expanding – often driven by disposal costs, transportation economics and regional policy rather than federal mandates.

Some states actively allow recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) in paving applications, while others restrict or prohibit their use due to agency specifications or material concerns. Even in states where RAS is permitted, adoption may be limited by processing infrastructure, moisture control challenges or quality requirements. In short: availability is local, and contractors should not assume recycling options exist everywhere.

That said, the forum highlighted a key point: recycling does not move forward unless people in the area ask for it. Where contractors and building owners express demand, recyclers and processors are more likely to enter the market. Tools like CDRA’s shinglerecycling.org zip code search are a practical starting point for understanding what options exist in your region today.

3 – Durability, longevity and repairability still matter most

While recycling and circularity are gaining attention, the forum reinforced that the most sustainable roof is still the one that lasts longer and performs better. From manufacturers to contractors, there is significant overlap in priorities. Long-lasting materials, systems that can be repaired instead of replaced, reduced heating and cooling loads and strong warranties all contribute to lower environmental impact — often before recycling ever enters the picture.

Sustainability is not just about end-of-life solutions; it’s about system selection, proper installation and maintenance throughout the service life of the roof.

What this means for the future

If there was one consistent takeaway from the forum, it’s that you don’t need to become sustainability experts overnight. But you can benefit from learning about recycling options, durability strategies and emerging industry resources to better answer customer questions and navigate evolving regulations.

Several industry resources aim to make that easier. Clemson University offers free educational materials based on their sustainability and resiliency research for the roofing industry, while NRCA’s latest sustainability report and ARMA’s technical bulletin on asphalt recycling offer practical guidance on waste reduction and lifecycle thinking. Additional research in the industry is focused on developing life cycle assessment data to better quantify the environmental impacts of asphalt roofing and recycling programs.

As sustainability conversations continue to evolve across construction, your ability to stay informed and educate customers can influence decisions that help shape not just the performance of a building, but the future of roofing materials long after the project is complete.

            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

Coalition unites to protect roofing diversity and to defend sound building science.

A broad coalition of roofing industry organizations has successfully defeated Mississippi House Bill 1730, legislation that would have imposed a mandatory minimum 3:12 roof slope on all new public buildings constructed in the state.

The measure, which passed the Mississippi House of Representatives before stalling in the state Senate, would have effectively prohibited low-slope roofing systems on public construction projects and eliminated proven, cost-effective roofing solutions used on schools, hospitals, government buildings and other public facilities nationwide.

"This outcome proves the power of a united industry speaking with one voice," said Ellen Thorp, CAE, president and managing director of Coalition for Sustainable Roofing (COSUR). "Low-slope roofing systems have a decades-long track record of performance on public buildings. This legislation was well-intentioned but based on a fundamental misunderstanding of building science, and we're grateful the Mississippi Senate recognized that."

"Low-slope roofing systems are a staple of commercial and public construction in Mississippi," said Christee Roberson, owner and president of Graham Roofing, Inc. in West Point, Mississippi. "This bill would have tied the hands of architects, building owners and contractors, and driven up costs for taxpayers in the process. We're glad the industry mobilized quickly and effectively to make sure that didn't happen."

The Coalition for Sustainable Roofing (COSUR) led the advocacy effort, working in close coordination with the EPDM Roofing Association (ERA), the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), the International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC), the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA), the Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association (PIMA), the Single Ply Roofing Industry (SPRI), the Mississippi Roofing Contractors Association and approximately a dozen additional roofing-related organizations and industry partners.

About Coalition for Sustainable Roofing

COSUR (Coalition for Sustainable Roofing) is an advocacy coalition representing leading U.S. roofing manufacturers committed to holistic roof system design and sustainable roofing assemblies. The coalition advocates for informed, system-level decisions and opposes overly restrictive policies not supported by local, real-world performance and field-verified outcomes.

Asphalt shingles were chosen for their fire resistance, durability and flexibility. Malarkey Legacy® Shingles with Scotchgard™ in Black Oak provided a historically appropriate aesthetic suited to the Pacific Northwest’s climate. The cone required custom vertical plywood installation more than 50 feet in the air, completed safely with an 80-foot lift. Rotted curved wooden gutters were custom fabricated and installed, and the restored copper spire returned to the top.

Silver Award winner: Wedge Roofing – California Mid-Century Gothic (Sebastopol, California)

Project overview: The California Mid-Century Gothic project presented San Francisco Bay Area’s Wedge Roofing with one of Northern California’s most architecturally complex steep-slope projects. The mid-1960s church features a rare hyperbolic paraboloid roof rising from a 6/12 pitch to vertical, making the roof both its most striking feature and its greatest challenge. Asphalt shingles were capable of meeting the building’s geometric and structural demands. Owens Corning® TruDefinition® Duration® Shingles in Brownwood flexed to follow the compound curves while allowing secure fastening on near-vertical surfaces, preserving the sculptural form without overloading the original structure. The project required rebuilding the ridge with Douglas fir decking and structural plywood, integrating solar-powered and fixed Velux skylights, and installing shingles over steep slopes using toe-jacks and fall protection. Two-ply modified bitumen and silicone-coated flat areas completed the system.

Bronze Award winner: Priddy Roofing and Exteriors – The Double Dome (Mercer, Pennsylvania)

Project overview: Homeowners seeking to replace the roof on a highly unconventional residence turned to Priddy Roofing and Exteriors for a project defined by dual interconnected geodesic domes. With 238 unique facets, each with its own pitch, angle and drainage direction, the roof presented a highly complex asphalt roofing installation. Owens Corning® TruDefinition® Duration® Shingles in Williamsburg Gray provided the flexibility to follow the compound curves while maintaining strong fastening and sealant adhesion. Full-coverage ice and water shield created a redundant water-resistant barrier across the constantly changing planes. The team installed the roof one facet at a time, with each course measured, cut, aligned, hand-sealed and hand-nailed. Custom flashings accommodated triangular and irregularly shaped windows, while a perimeter intake and site-built circular ridge vent restored ventilation.

Best-in-Class Award winner, Commercial/Mixed Use Category: KPost Roofing & Waterproofing - National Medal of Honor Museum (Arlington, Texas)

Project overview: The National Medal of Honor Museum in Arlington, Texas, designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects, challenged KPost Roofing & Waterproofing with a complex low-slope roofing project on a building of profound national significance. The roof spans multiple elevations, sloped planes and over 450 structural steel penetrations, requiring precision, durability and aesthetic excellence. SOPREMA SBS-modified bitumen, paired with Alsan RS liquid-applied detailing, provided long-term performance, while lightweight insulating concrete, metal panels and Kingspan insulated panels were integrated to ensure slope-to-drain functionality, continuity and water resistance across all areas. Careful sequencing and meticulous installation preserved the architectural intent, protected the building and supported the museum’s mission.

The International Roofing Expo provided the perfect backdrop to celebrate these industry awards, with attendees engaging in networking opportunities, photo sessions and discussions on the latest advancements in asphalt roofing.

This award-winning historic restoration showcases craftsmanship, leadership and the power of asphalt roofing.

HER Roofing Co. Inc. has earned the Gold Award in the 2026 Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards presented by the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA), standing out among the top asphalt roofing projects across North America. The award recognizes HER Roofing’s exceptional work on the historic Settlemier House, an iconic 1892 home in Oregon that required a careful balance of craftsmanship, performance and respect for architectural heritage.

The award-winning project included a full tear-off of the original wood shake roof and installation of a new steep-slope asphalt roofing system. One of the most complex elements was the home’s distinctive cone roof, which demanded detailed planning and precise execution. To meet both performance and aesthetic requirements, the HER Roofing team selected Malarkey Legacy® shingles with Scotchgard™ in Black Oak, chosen for their Class A fire resistance and ability to complement the historic character of the structure.

The challenges went far beyond materials alone. The cone roof’s original spaced sheathing required the crew to vertically score and install plywood more than 50 feet above ground to create a stable deck. An 80-foot lift was used to safely complete the work. The team also addressed rotted curved wood gutters wrapping the cone and coordinated custom fabrication to maintain the building’s original look. Once the roofing was complete, the home’s original copper spire was carefully reinstalled, preserving one of its most recognizable architectural features.

The project was completed in just two weeks by a seven-person crew and serves as a powerful example of how asphalt roofing can deliver durability, safety and beauty, even on highly detailed historic structures.

Behind the Gold Award is a company known for both technical expertise and strong values. Based in Portland, Oregon, HER Roofing Co. Inc. is a 100 percent woman-owned roofing and gutter contractor led by founder Jana Zavala. The company’s name reflects its core principles of Honesty, Equality and Respect, values that are evident in every project they take on.

Jana brings decades of roofing experience to HER Roofing, including leadership roles with major manufacturers and years spent training contractors across the country. She is also a founding member of National Women in Roofing and a well-respected voice in the industry.

HER Roofing is also a proud member of the R-Club, RoofersCoffeeShop’s exclusive contractor community that supports visibility, education, networking and digital growth for roofing professionals. R-Club contractors are committed to professionalism and ongoing improvement, qualities clearly reflected in this Gold Award-winning project.

This national recognition reinforces what many in the industry already know: HER Roofing delivers outstanding craftsmanship, thoughtful leadership and roofs built to last.

The Annual Conference reinforced a clear message: regulatory momentum is not slowing down.

Known for its excellent technical support and industry standards, the Single Ply Roofing Industry (SPRI) brought together leading single-ply roofing experts at the 2026 SPRI Annual Conference in Tucson, Arizona. The meeting served as a powerful reminder that technical leadership and regulatory awareness go together in driving high-level roofing systems and installation performance. With rapid shifts occurring at the federal level, discussions centered on how state regulations have become increasingly active and are now playing a leading role in shaping building codes and standards. A key highlight of the meeting was the technical report delivered by Chadwick Collins, SPRI technical director. Chadwick provided a comprehensive update on regulatory developments across the country, noting that state-level activity has surpassed that of past years. "Among the most notable updates is the potential legislation prohibiting low slopes on buildings using public funds in Mississippi, underscoring the growing emphasis on how legislation and regulation circumventing the common code acceptance process can lead to policies that are uniformed by the professionals in the industry."

The discussion reflected a broader trend. As federal regulatory frameworks evolve, states are stepping forward with their own initiatives related to energy performance, material requirements and installation standards. This increased activity means contractors, manufacturers and consultants must remain vigilant in tracking changes that could directly affect design practices and jobsite compliance.

Collaboration remains central to addressing these challenges. Leading organizations including the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), the Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association (PIMA), the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA), International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC) and the EPDM Roofing Association (ERA) are actively working with SPRI to monitor policy developments and advocate for balanced regulations that protect performance, innovation and safety.

At the heart of SPRI’s impact is its commitment to industry standard development and maintenance. The association continues to be highly active in creating and updating technical standards that guide product performance, installation quality and alignment with building codes. These standards not only support manufacturers and contractors but also provide clarity for regulators and code officials seeking proven, effective solutions. Roofing professionals can explore SPRI’s standards work and regulatory engagement at SPRI.org to better understand how the association’s technical leadership supports the industry.

The Annual Conference reinforced a clear message: regulatory momentum is not slowing down. With states taking a more prominent role and performance expectations continuing to rise, staying informed is essential. Through collaboration, standards development and proactive engagement, SPRI and its partners are helping ensure the roofing industry remains prepared, resilient and positioned for long-term success.
