The National Roofing Contractors Association encourages roofing professionals to join industry trade associations representing contractors, consultants and manufacturers in the U.S. and Canada in taking part in the latest Quarterly Market Index Survey for Reroofing to evaluate business conditions during the first quarter of 2026.

For more than two years, the survey has taken the pulse of the reroofing industry and continues to serve as a regular barometer of the industry’s business conditions. By asking a handful of business questions and measuring responses across several demographics, the survey helps indicate the reroofing market’s strength and trajectory. Your response provides valuable insight.

The results of the Quarterly Market Index Survey for Reroofing are made available to all survey participants via an online dashboard that enables users to filter results by region and other metrics.

For the previous survey that measured business activity during the fourth quarter of 2025, 75% of responses came from roofing contractors and 25% came from roof consultants.

The survey is an industrywide effort to collect information about the reroofing market spearheaded by a coalition of trade associations, including the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, Canadian Roofing Contractors Association, Chemical Fabrics & Film Association Inc., EPDM Roofing Association, International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants, Metal Construction Association, Metal Roofing Alliance, National Roofing Contractors Association, National Women in Roofing, Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association, Roof Coatings Manufacturers Association and Single Ply Roofing Industry.

We went behind the scenes at CRE 2025 with Jason Campbell of CRCA to talk workforce, education and growing the Canadian roofing industry.

This year, The Coffee Shops™ got the chance to go North and meet with our industry friends from Canada at the Canadian Roofing Expo (CRE)! This was the first year we attended, and we had an incredible time. The show (formerly known as Rooftech) was hosted in Toronto, Canada and featured over 150 exhibitors, educational sessions and live demos! While there, we recorded a live Roofing Road Trips® episode with Jason Campbell, first vice president of the Canadian Roofing Contractors Association (CRCA), which hosts CRE, to talk about the expo.

Jason opened the conversation by sharing some basics about what CRCA is hoping to do with CRE. He shared, “We hold the show every other year with the goal to give the manufacturers a chance to exhibit new innovations and have educational seminars here that are beneficial to our industry.” Creating this space is key to helping strengthen the industry. Jason explained, “Roofing is difficult. It's a dangerous profession. Two of the biggest challenges in the industry are attracting workers and managing supply chains, especially in the post-COVID world.”

By building a designated space for the industry to come together in person, CRCA has created the perfect place to address these issues. Jason shared, “We want to make sure that our manufacturers and distributors have an avenue to showcase new goods. And we offer educational seminars because a lot of consultants and engineers need to get their continuing education credits, which is key for them to keep up their status as an engineer. Further, we partner with Media Edge to promote the show to raise awareness of the industry, and we partner with a company called Beyond Borders that works with Canadian immigration to bring workers to Canada, get them situated and set up with the trades.”

The result of all of these efforts? Canada’s biggest trade show and forum dedicated to all parts of the roofing community and a huge boost for the Canadian roofing market. “CRE is a great opportunity to showcase our industry. We have a lot of good people and a lot of great innovation. And there’s still a huge potential for more growth, we can even just see that in the amount this show has grown since we did it two years ago,” Jason explained. “Be proud of our industry. You're in it. Put the time in. Enjoy. Respect each other. We have a lot to be proud of.”

The survey is an industrywide effort spearheaded by a coalition of trade assocations, including the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, Canadian Roofing Contractors Association, Chemical Fabrics & Film Association Inc., EPDM Roofing Association, International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants, Metal Construction Association, Metal Roofing Alliance, National Roofing Contractors Association, National Women in Roofing, Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association, Roof Coatings Manufacturers Association and Single Ply Roofing Industry.

Seventy-seven percent of survey responses came from roofing contractors, and 23% of responses came from roof consultants. Forty-one percent of respondents indicated they primarily work on a blend of low-slope and steep-slope roof systems, 41% indicated they primarily work on low-slope roof systems while 18% indicated they primarily work on steep-slope roof systems.

Participants who identify as roofing contractors were asked to report the number of squares of reroofing material installed by their companies during the second quarter of 2025 compared with the same quarter in 2024. Thirty-four percent of respondents reported the volume of reroofing materials installed increased, 28% reported no change and 38% reported a decrease in materials installed year-over-year.

Project contracts increased for 35% of respondents, 33% reported no change in activity and 32% indicated a decrease in project contracts.

Additionally, two indices offer insight regarding customer inquiries and project contracts across market segments. The indices are based on a 0 to 100 scale. A score of 50 or higher suggests expansion or optimism; a score below 50 indicates contraction or pessimism.

The customer inquiries index score for the total industry increased to 58.7 compared with 53.6 for the first quarter of 2025. The score for the steep-slope reroofing market is 63.2, the score for the low-slope reroofing market is 57.1, and the score for the blended low- and steep-slope reroofing market is 58.3.

The innovations presented at CRE reflected trends being felt across the industry.

In a live episode of Roofing Road Trips®, recorded on the show floor of the Canadian Roofing Expo (CRE) in Toronto, Ontario, host Megan Ellsworth sat down with Jason “Jay” Campbell, the current vice chair of the Canadian Roofing Contractors Association (CRCA), to dig into what’s shaping the future of roofing. From green roofs to drones and artificial intelligence, this year’s CRE provided a snapshot of an evolving industry.

Rebranded from RoofTech, the CRE takes place every other year. “Our goals in having the show in general were to give the manufacturers a chance to exhibit new innovations and have educational seminars that are beneficial to our industry,” Jay shared. “It also allows for networking opportunities with a lot of our colleagues.”

Top trends: Technology and sustainability

This year’s show spotlighted a growing adoption of advanced tools, from using drones for roof inspections to more sophisticated testing equipment. Jay observed, “Just seeing the new innovation here – we're in an industry where technology is ever-changing with the advent of AI.” Artificial intelligence is making its way into jobsite planning, inspections and data analysis, helping contractors make faster, more informed decisions. Its use is gaining traction across the industry and companies look to streamline operations and improve precision.

One of the most visible trends was the emphasis on sustainability. “There’s been a shift into more green roofing and energy-efficient roofing over the last couple of years,” Jay explained. In Ontario, where the show was held, there are new mandates in place requiring that 50% of roof areas on new buildings be either green or solar reflective. Contractors are increasingly addressing stormwater management through smart roofing solutions, like vegetative roofs and reflective systems, to meet evolving building codes and environmental goals.

Supporting contractors through innovation and research

For roofing professionals across Canada – and increasingly the U.S. – the CRCA plays a vital role in driving standards and supporting contractors. “We’re involved with a lot of national committees – the National Technical Committee, the Building Research Committee,” Jay said. “So, there’s always new information coming out when it relates to testing and building codes.”

Wind uplift calculations, changing climate conditions and proper installation practices are just a few areas where the CRCA is providing leadership and resources.
