IKO is honoring its rich history while investing in plant expansion, broader product selection and proven performance.

At the close of day two at the 2026 International Roofing Expo in Las Vegas, Jack Gottesman, marketing and brand director of IKO North America, shared some exciting milestones and plans with Dani Sheehan of The Coffee Shops™. Standing inside the company’s extensive booth, Jack reflected on both the energy of the show and what’s next for IKO.

“What we are here to do is celebrate. 2026 marks our 75th year, and it’s a moment for us to pause and reflect,” Jack said. “We count our blessings as a family owned and operated roofing manufacturer around the world. There’s a lot to be proud of, and there’s a lot that we’re really looking forward to as well.”

Among the plans that the company is looking forward to are two new manufacturing plants opening a week after the convention in South Carolina, followed by a new shingle plant in Jacksonville, Florida, in April.

“It's really performance, right? Performance is what people expect from us. It's what our distributors expect. It's what our contractors expect. And that's what we're here to deliver on,” Jack expressed. “Performance and products, performance and services, and a smile means performance, too.”

On the product side, Jack highlighted one of IKO’s newest shingle colors, Old Style Weatherwood, available in the Dynasty and Nordic lines. Both feature the company’s wide nailing zone designed to support installation accuracy along with impact resistance and high wind ratings. For a thorough look at the different types of colors, Jack also pointed to 30-second drone videos for every shingle color, showing real roofs under real-world conditions to help homeowners visualize their choices.

Furthermore, IKO is expanding its cool roofing offerings with new colors including Harbor Black and Shoreline Gray. “Cool colors have the reflective roofing technology that was designed to fit the demands of regulations in California and increasingly other areas of the world,” Jack said. “It's what the homeowners are looking for. We want to make sure that we are delivering as many options as possible, and that breadth of color selection is a really good thing.”

Finally, Jack explained how IKO is pushing toward growth in the metal roofing sphere in 2026. With the acquisitions of DECRA Metal Roofing and Tilcor, IKO is integrating stone-coated metal solutions into its broader residential strategy. “When it comes to metals, what makes us unique is having different color options in a variety of different profiles that homeowners are looking for,” Jack said.

Metal roofing offers durability, efficiency, and long-term protection in a changing climate.

For homeowners facing increasingly intense wind events, roof performance has become a central concern. In the article “How do I protect my Florida home from high winds?” by Trevor Underwood, DECRA Metal Roofing outlines why proactive roof choices are critical as storm seasons grow longer and insurance options become more limited across the state and the country.

Homeowners are now dealing with stronger storms, higher wind speeds and weather patterns that push damage further inland. These conditions have contributed to rising insurance costs, policy non-renewals and claim denials, making prevention more important than ever.

Metal roofing offers significant advantages over traditional materials such as asphalt shingles or clay tiles. Stone-coated metal roofing that meets Miami-Dade standards can withstand wind speeds up to 120 miles per hour, helping prevent large roof sections from peeling away during storms. Interlocking panel systems also reduce the risk of wind-driven rain penetrating the roof assembly, protecting decking and interior spaces.

Energy efficiency is another key benefit. According to the Florida Solar Energy Center, about 20 percent of a typical Florida home’s energy use is tied to heat gain through the roof and attic. Metal roofing reflects solar heat rather than absorbing it, which can lower cooling costs, especially when lighter colors are selected.

Beyond wind and energy performance, metal roofing delivers long-term value. It offers resistance to hail impact, the highest fire rating available, and increased durability that can extend roof life two to three times longer than other materials. Homeowners may also benefit from potential insurance discounts and increased resale value.

Class 4 roofs offer superior protection against large hail and other severe weather threats.

Choosing a roof that can withstand hailstorms is a growing priority for homeowners in many parts of the United States, and DECRA Metal Roofing’s article “What’s the Best Type of Roof for Hail? Guide to Class 4 Hail Resistance” breaks down the key considerations for impact-resistant roofing. Hail can cause cracking, chipping and warping of roof materials, and repeated damage can lead to costly repairs and leaks. Understanding how hail ratings work and how they affect long-term performance can help property owners make better choices when it’s time for a roof replacement.

The article explains that hail resistance is measured by Underwriters Laboratories’ UL 2218 Impact Rating test, which simulates the force of large hail by dropping steel balls on roofing materials. Roofs are assigned ratings from Class 1 (lowest) to Class 4 (highest), with Class 4 roofs showing no penetration or fracture even when struck by a two-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet. A Class 4 rating is widely seen as the gold standard for impact resistance and can significantly reduce the risk of damage in hail-prone areas.

While the hail rating is a major factor, the article emphasizes that homeowners should also look at a roof’s overall performance profile. Impact resistance often goes hand in hand with strong wind resistance, high fire ratings and the ability to withstand extreme temperature swings. Choosing a system that performs well across these metrics improves durability and can enhance a home’s energy efficiency and resale value.

Metal roofing is frequently highlighted as a top choice because of its ability to reflect heat, resist impact and provide a long service life. Metal roofs can last two to three times longer than traditional asphalt shingles as well, offering protection for decades and often qualifying for lower insurance premiums due to their resilience.

Homeowners must consider durability, weight and energy performance when planning for solar.

As California continues to push toward renewable energy goals, roofing decisions are becoming more closely tied to solar requirements. In the article “What homeowners need to know about the California solar mandate” by Trevor Underwood, DECRA Metal Roofing explains how the mandate affects homeowners and why roof selection plays a critical role in long-term performance and cost efficiency.

The California Solar Mandate originated from updated energy efficiency standards adopted by the California Energy Commission, requiring solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on new residential construction beginning in 2020. In 2023, the mandate expanded to include additional building types such as larger apartment buildings and certain commercial structures including schools, warehouses and offices. The program supports the state’s goal of generating 50% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

Under the mandate, solar systems must be designed to meet a home’s energy needs based on square footage and location. For homeowners required to install solar, DECRA emphasizes that roofing material selection is a key consideration. Solar panels typically last 25 years or more, while traditional asphalt shingles often require replacement within 12 to 15 years. Replacing a roof beneath solar panels adds significant cost and disruption. Metal roofing offers a longer-lasting alternative, with life spans of 40 to 70 years that better align with solar system longevity.

Weight is another important factor. Solar panels add hundreds of pounds to a roof, which can strain heavier roofing materials or aging structures. Metal roofing like DECRA’s stone-coated metal roofing is lightweight yet strong, offering high load-bearing capacity ideal to support the weight of solar panels.

Homeowners in cold regions are turning to metal roofing for high-performance protection against harsh winter conditions.

Across the United States, winter weather has become more unpredictable and intense. Homeowners in cold climates are facing longer seasons of snow, ice and freezing rain, often arriving earlier and lasting well into spring. These changing patterns are testing the limits of traditional roofing materials, making it more important than ever to invest in a system designed for year-round protection.

A metal roof is one of the best defenses against winter’s harshest conditions. Known for their strength and efficiency, DECRA Metal Roofing materials combine durability with cutting-edge performance to safeguard homes through snowstorms, high winds and temperature swings. Whether you’re replacing an aging roof or building new, choosing the right roofing material can mean the difference between seasonal repairs and lasting peace of mind.

In this article, you’ll learn why metal roofing is a trusted choice for cold-weather regions. We’ll cover the key features that make it ideal for winter climates, additional benefits homeowners appreciate and answers to the most common questions about how metal roofs perform in snow, ice and extreme weather.

How metal roofing protects homes from snow, rain and ice

Winter weather brings a mix of precipitation, freezing temperatures and high winds. Let’s explore how stone-coated metal roofing offers protection against these elements.

Snow, ice and freezing temperatures

Metal roofing is a great choice for areas with heavy snowfall because it’s lightweight. Unlike heavier roofing materials like clay tiles and asphalt shingles, it can handle the added weight without sagging. Additionally, its nonporous surface helps regulate roof temperature, preventing the snow from melting and refreezing — a common issue with other roofing materials.

This melt-freeze cycle often leads to ice dams. Ice dams form when melting snow flows toward the roof’s edge and refreezes near the roofline, creating a barrier of ice around gutters and eaves. This barrier blocks additional snowmelt from draining properly, forcing water to seep into the fascia or even the home’s interior, causing costly damage.

DECRA metal roofing offers an added layer of protection against ice dams. Its unique design features an insulating air space between the roofing panel and the underlying deck, which helps maintain consistent temperatures, prevent leaks and reduce the risk of ice dams forming.

High winds

Colder climates experience strong winds, especially during the winter months. These winds can be driven by factors such as:

Temperature differences: Cold air is heavier than warm air, leading to the development of wind as air moves from areas of high pressure (cold regions) to areas of low pressure (warmer regions).

Weather systems: Winter storms, including blizzards and nor'easters, can bring both heavy snow and strong winds, with gusts sometimes reaching hurricane-force levels.

Geography: Certain colder regions, such as mountainous areas, may experience intensified winds due to the local terrain.

Homeowners are pleased to know DECRA roofs are backed by a warranty that covers wind speeds up to 120 miles per hour.

Hail and wind-driven rain

Winter storms can also bring rain and hail. DECRA has the highest possible rating for hail impact resistance, with a warranty covering hail up to 2.5 inches in diameter. Additionally, when rain is driven by strong winds, it can seep into even the smallest gaps in your roof. DECRA’s unique interlocking design helps seal out this risk, providing an extra layer of protection for your home.

Other benefits of metal roofing

There are several other reasons why homeowners choose metal roofing. Here are five that are worth considering.

Long lifespan

Metal roofs have a lifespan that is two to three times longer than roofs made of traditional materials, like asphalt shingles. This means you don’t have to replace your roof every 15 or 20 years.

Fire resistance

DECRA holds the highest possible Class A fire rating. With wildfires becoming a growing concern on both coasts, this provides homeowners with added peace of mind.

Energy efficiency

The same energy efficiency that helps homeowners conserve heat in winter makes it helpful in the summer. A modern metal roof reflects heat up and away from buildings, saving homeowners around 40% on energy costs.

Low maintenance

Metal roofs require less maintenance than wood shakes and clay tiles because they aren't as prone to common roofing issues such as:

Cracking

Splitting

Cupping

Warping

Oxidation

Rust

Mold growth

If you're tired of the constant upkeep of traditional roofing materials, you'll appreciate the low-maintenance benefits of a metal roof.

Insurance discounts

Because of all the benefits listed above, insurance companies tend to prefer metal roofs on the properties they cover. It’s worth asking your carrier if they offer a discount for having one. Additionally, many insurance companies are now using drones to assess roof conditions and may drop coverage for properties with problematic roofs (those likely to file a claim). A metal roof reduces the likelihood of losing your insurance protection.

3 common questions about metal roofing

We hear many of the same questions about metal roofing, especially when it comes to winter weather. Here are the top three.

1 - Do I need snow guards with a DECRA Metal Roof?

No! Snow guards are barriers that prevent snow and ice from sliding off the roof and damaging property or people below. Many homeowners with DECRA metal roofing don’t need snow guards because the roof maintains a stable temperature that prevents excessive melting. However, in some cases, especially homes with steep roofs, snow may slide off more easily. If you're concerned, you may choose to add snow guards for peace of mind, but they’re not required.

2 - Can a metal roof be installed during winter, or do we need to wait until spring?

Yes! One of the great advantages of DECRA metal roofing is that it can be installed in winter. Unlike some traditional materials — like asphalt shingles, which can crack or split at temperatures below 45 degrees — metal roofing is able to withstand very low temperatures. As long as your contractor says it's safe to work, a metal roof can be installed during any month of the year.

3 - Will a metal roof fit my home's unique style?

Yes! DECRA Metal Roofing is available in shingle, tile and shake profiles, with colors that complement any home style. Whether you have a colonial residence, a mission-style abode or a contemporary home, you’ll be sure to find a profile and color that suits your home’s style.

Learn how metal shake roofing boasts superior durability while still delivering a timeless aesthetic.

Since the early beginnings of our nation, people covered their homes with the best materials they could find. Wood shake roofs have been a mainstay since, topping the houses of generations of Americans in multiple styles and producing that classic, homey feel.

Now, a more mordern material is gaining popularity. With its undeniable durability in comparison to wood shakes, stone-coated metal offers stronger protection for homes while still achieving the visual appeal of their more traditional counterparts.

Here at DECRA Metal Roofing, we want to make sure homeowners understand how they don’t have to compromise performance for aesthetics. In this article, we discuss:

The history of shake roofing and the differences between wood shakes and shingles

Why more homeowners are making the practical switch from wood shake to metal shake roofs

How DECRA Metal Roofing achieves the classic look of traditional wood shakes.

The history of shake roofing

Early settlers in what is now the United States brought many construction techniques from Europe, including roof-building methods. They often used wooden shakes or shingles to cover their homes in the New World, taking advantage of the timber resources. Wood shake roofs are especially prevalent on historic homes in the Northeast, where their rustic charm reflects the region's architectural heritage.

However, around the start of the 20th century, wood shakes began to decline in popularity with the rise of asphalt shingles. Asphalt offered advantages that wood could not match, including:

Lower cost

Greater fire resistance

Easier mass production

Simpler installation

Less maintenance

Over the next century, asphalt shingles became the dominant roofing choice in the U.S. Today, however, metal roofing is gaining traction and is now considered the second most popular roofing material for both residential and commercial properties. Before diving into the benefits of metal shake roofs, it's important to understand the differences between wood shakes and wood shingles.

Wood shakes versus wood shingles: What’s the difference?

Many people use the words “shakes” and “shingles” interchangeably when it comes to wooden roofs, but they’re slightly different when it comes to their manufacturing process.

Both are cut from cedar, cypress, redwood or pine. However, shakes are typically hand-split from logs, resulting in a rougher, more textured surface, while shingles are sawn on both sides, creating a smoother and more uniform appearance. Wood shingles have a thinner butt — about ½-inch wide — compared to shakes, which have a ¾-inch butt and may be split on one or both sides.

Traditional shake roofing versus metal shake roofing

Nowadays, homeowners don’t have to choose between wood shakes or wood shingles. There’s another choice that offers the same aesthetic, but with superior durability: metal shake roofing.

Longer lifespan

Metal roofs have a lifespan that is two to three times longer than traditional roofing materials like wood shakes and shingles. This longevity is largely due to its ability to withstand severe weather including:

Wind: Wood shakes are typically nailed down one by one, leaving them more susceptible to wind uplift. In severe weather, such as hurricanes or tornadoes, individual shakes can loosen or blow off, exposing the roof deck to potential damage. Metal roofs, with their interlocking panels, offer better resistance to wind uplift. DECRA products are rigorously tested to withstand high-velocity winds, including those common in hurricane-prone areas like Miami-Dade, and come with a warranty that covers winds up to 120 miles per hour.

Hail: Large hailstones can crack, split or puncture wood shakes, leading to significant repairs or even full replacement. Once damaged, wood shakes are more prone to moisture infiltration, which can cause further issues like rot and mold. Metal roofs, on the other hand, are highly resistant to hail damage. For instance, DECRA roofs have the highest possible UL2118 Class 4 Impact Rating and are warrantied for hailstones up to 2.5 inches in diameter.

Water: In areas with heavy rainfall and humidity, wood shakes can absorb moisture over time. When exposed to wind-driven rain, water can seep into cracks and joints. Proper installation and regular maintenance, including cleaning and treatment, are essential to minimize water-related damage in shake roofs. Metal roofs, such as DECRA, are designed to withstand severe weather conditions, including wind-driven rain. In fact, DECRA’s products have been tested to protect against wind-driven rain at speeds of up to 110 miles per hour, offering protection against water infiltration without the constant maintenance that wood shakes require.

Snow and Ice: In colder climates, wood shakes can struggle under the weight of snow and ice. The freeze-thaw cycle can cause the shakes to crack or split, and ice dams can form on the roof, leading to further water infiltration as the ice melts. The non-porous nature of metal roofs means that snow and ice typically slide right off the roof before it can accumulate.

Fire resistance

Wood shakes are vulnerable to fire because they’re made from natural wood, which is highly flammable. Over time, wood shakes can dry out, making them even more likely to catch fire. Most wood shakes don’t meet modern fire safety standards unless treated with fire-retardant chemicals, and even those treatments can wear off over time, especially in harsh weather. This is a big concern for homeowners in wildfire-prone areas.

Metal roofing is non-combustible, making it one of the best choices for fire protection. All DECRA Metal Roofing products have earned the highest Class A fire rating. Additionally, the interlocking panel system helps prevent the roof deck and framing from igniting due to flying embers or spreading flames.

Many traditional roofing materials, including wood shakes, can’t offer this level of protection.

Low maintenance

Traditional wood shakes demand significantly more maintenance than metal roofing, which often requires little-to-no care for years. Because they are made from natural wood, shakes are prone to developing moss and mold. Homeowners frequently find themselves spending valuable time and effort on upkeep, including cleaning, scraping and applying treatments to protect their roofs. Metal shake roofs eliminate these maintenance concerns, allowing homeowners to enjoy a durable roofing solution with minimal need for repairs.

With a better understanding of metal roofing's advantages, see how DECRA brings the classic look of wood shakes to life.

How DECRA achieves the classic look of wood shakes

DECRA offers two metal shake roof options that capture the classic beauty of wood shakes while providing unmatched strength, allowing you to find the perfect match for your home’s unique style.

DECRA Shake

DECRA’s Shake line beautifully captures the distinct shadows and rich colors of traditional cedar shake, delivering the same rustic appeal. However, unlike real cedar shakes, DECRA does not rot and warp over time. It’s available in a wide range of colors, including charcoal, chestnut, granite grey, shadowood and weathered timber.

DECRA Shake XD

DECRA’s Shake XD line offers a stone-coated metal solution for those looking to upgrade from traditional thick hand-split wood shakes. It preserves the classic tones and textures of wooden roofing materials while providing superior durability. Unlike wood shakes, DECRA Shake XD maintains their original color for decades without the need for chemical protection or repeated staining or spraying to withstand the elements. DECRA Shake XD is available in antique chestnut, pinnacle grey, midnight eclipse and woodland green.

Do you think you know the whole truth about metal roofs? Some of these facts might surprise you!

Editor’s note: Share this information with customers who have questions about metal roofs.

Metal roofing often gets a bad rap: too loud, too hot, too risky, too expensive. But how much of that is actually true? For years, hearsay and half-truths have shaped public opinion about this durable roofing option. Now, with more homeowners looking for sustainable and long-lasting materials, companies like DECRA Metal Roofing are helping separate fact from fiction. From temperature control to cost, we’re cutting through the noise to reveal what metal roofing really offers and what it definitely doesn’t.

Myth 1: Metal roofs make houses hotter in the summer.

It's perfectly logical to think that a metal roof would make your house hotter in the summer, but this metal roofing myth couldn’t be further from the truth. Metal roofs are actually one of the most energy-efficient roofing materials on the market.

Metal roofs reflect energy from the sun up and away from the home, unlike asphalt shingle roofs which absorb heat like a sponge. During hot summer months, you may see warnings about how asphalt can heat up to 50 degrees hotter than the surrounding air temperatures.

This is because asphalt has poor solar reflectivity and low emissivity, making asphalt shingles one of the worst choices for energy-efficient roofing.

Metal roofs, on the other hand, are inherently reflective and can reflect as much as 70% of the sun's energy back into the air. Since metal reflects this energy up and away from the building, less heat is absorbed and the home stays cooler.

To illustrate this point, think of the metal hood of your car. Even on a hot day with heat from the sun above and heat from the engine below, the metal hood of your car cools quickly once parked. Within just a few minutes, the hood is cool to the touch.

Myth 2: Metal roofs are noisy in the rain.

Metal roofs are not inherently loud in the rain. The noise levels largely depend on the type of metal roofing and how it was installed. The thicker the coating and texture of a metal roofing panel, the more effective it is at disrupting the reverberation of sound waves. For example, uncoated sheets of aluminum or corrugated metal roofing, like those on barns or sheds, can be louder in the rain due to reverberation.

Additionally, residential and commercial properties typically have complete roof assemblies, including roof decks, insulation and underlayment, which dampen the sound of rain even further.

Stone-coated metal roofing products are especially quiet due to their texture and sound-absorbing stone granules.

Myth 3: Metal roofs rust.

Not all metal roofs rust; their susceptibility to rusting depends on the type of metal and its treatment. Rust specifically affects iron and its alloys like steel. Steel roofs, which are alloys of iron, usually have coatings of zinc (galvanized) or a blend of zinc, aluminum and silicon to resist rust and corrosion.

DECRA Metal Roofing takes rust and corrosion resistance a step further by applying a metallic alloy coating, made up of 55% aluminum, 43.4% zinc and 1.6% silicon, ensuring long-term rust and corrosion resistance.

The aluminum ensures that a barrier against corrosion remains in effect once the zinc coating is sacrificed. Silicon provides superior alloy coating adhesion and helps the coating remain firmly in place while the high-grade carbon steel is rolled, stamped or bent during the manufacturing process.

This formula combines the strength of steel with the rust resistance of aluminum to ensure long-lasting endurance to the elements.

Myth 4: Metal roofs attract lightning.

It’s important to note that metal conducts electricity, but electricity is not drawn to it. Research on lightning protection reveals that metal roofing is no more likely to attract a lightning strike than any other type of traditional roofing material.

In fact, as a non-combustible material with the highest Class A fire resistance rating, metal roofs are one of the most desirable materials for homes and buildings in lightning-prone regions.

Why? Because when it comes to lightning, it’s all about fire prevention. Lightning produces intense heat and often this heat can cause fires on the roof or inside the house after "jumping" from the roof to the first available path to the ground. If the roof is covered with combustible materials like wood shakes or petroleum-based asphalt shingles, a lightning strike can easily start a fire.

When lightning strikes a metal roof, the voltage and risk of fire are quickly contained since metal is conductive and provides the lightning strike with a direct path to the ground outside of the home. This is essentially how a lightning rod works. Made from fire-resistant and highly conductive metal, lightning rods capture and safely channel the electrical energy from lightning strikes to the ground.

Myth 5: Metal roofs are more expensive.

There’s a grain of truth to this myth if you only factor in the cost of the initial installation. But when long-term value and ROI are considered, metal roofs are actually one of the smartest investments a homeowner can make.

Metal roofing is one of the most durable and longest-lasting roofing materials on the market–it also has an extremely high ROI. For instance, the strength and style of a new metal roof can increase home value by up to six percent. And while metal roofs cost slightly more to install than asphalt shingles, they will last two to three times longer.

Asphalt: 12 - 20 years

Clay or Concrete Tile: 50 years

Metal: 70 years

Wood: 15 - 20 years

Catching hail damage early can save your roof and wallet before small issues turn into big repairs.

If you think a few hailstones can’t do much harm to your roof, think again. What looks like a harmless dimple or small crack could be the start of a financial sinkhole. Roof damage from hail is sneaky; it doesn’t always show up with dramatic leaks or obvious breaks. Instead, it quietly chips away at your home’s first line of defense. And by the time you notice something’s wrong, the repair bill may already be climbing. Whether you live in a hail-prone region or you're just bracing for the next storm, knowing what to look for could save you thousands.

How to recognize hail damage on your roof

If a hailstorm has recently hit your area, inspecting your roof for damage is a smart move. Even minor roof damage can lead to leaks that compromise the decking, underlayment and even the interior of your home. Here’s how to recognize hail damage on three of the most common roofing materials.

Hail damage to asphalt shingles

Asphalt shingles are the most widely used roofing material in the U.S., covering about 75% of homes. However, they’re also highly susceptible to hail damage–especially older or lower-quality shingles. Shingles that have lost their protective granules are particularly vulnerable, making even small hailstones a potential threat.

When inspecting your asphalt shingle roof for hail damage, look for:

Missing or partially missing shingles: Strong winds and hail can dislodge them entirely.

Shingles loosened from their adhesive strips: These may appear lifted or no longer firmly attached.

Cracks, tears or dents in individual shingles: Hail impact can weaken or break shingles, reducing their lifespan.

Warping, cupping or fish-mouthing: Shingles may curl at the edges, forming a distinct wavy appearance.

You may also notice discoloration in affected areas, where granules have been knocked off, exposing the underlying material. In severe cases, you might even see glimpses of the roof decking or underlayment where shingles have blown away or broken apart.

Hail damage to clay or concrete tiles

After a hailstorm, clay or concrete tile roofs can look like someone took a hammer to a pottery shop. These roofing materials are more brittle and fragile than others. Even walking on them can cause damage, so hail can be especially destructive.

After severe hail, look for:

Chipped, cracked or shattered tiles: The impact of hail often creates fractures similar to broken pottery.

Tiles that have shifted, slid or fallen off: High winds and hail impact can dislodge them completely.

Exposed underlayment or decking: Missing or damaged tiles may reveal the protective layers underneath, increasing the risk of leaks.

While clay and concrete tiles are popular in certain regions, hailstorms can leave them severely compromised, requiring prompt inspection and repairs.

Hail damage to wood shakes or shingles

Traditional wood shakes and shingles don’t just suffer from hail damage — constant exposure to moisture from rain and humidity can also weaken them over time. Once the wood becomes saturated or brittle, hail impact can easily lead to cracks, splits and chips.

Signs of hail damage on wood shakes or shingles include:

Splintering and deep cracks: Hailstones can cause sharp breaks along the grain of the wood.

Shakes that are missing or dislodged: If loosened by prior wear, they can be knocked off completely.

Increased risk of leaks: Heavy damage exposes the roof decking, making the home more vulnerable to water intrusion.

A hail-damaged wood roof can deteriorate quickly if left unrepaired, so it’s crucial to check for issues after a storm and take action to prevent further water damage.

Metal roofing offers hail resistance

Hail damage can be a major headache for homeowners, but with stone-coated metal roofing, you can avoid costly repairs and insurance complications.

All DECRA products carry the highest Underwriters Laboratories (UL) rating for hail impact resistance and are warrantied against damage from hailstones up to 2.5 inches in diameter.

Whether you live in Texas–which led the nation in hail incidents in 2024–Nebraska, Minnesota or somewhere else prone to severe storms, DECRA gives you peace of mind that your roof is protected.

5 more reasons to choose DECRA Metal Roofing

While DECRA provides hail protection, its benefits go far beyond that. Unlike traditional materials such as asphalt shingles, clay tiles or wood shakes, DECRA delivers a long-lasting solution for homeowners.

1 – Wind resistance

Hailstorms often come with intense winds, which can rip shingles from roofs and cause significant damage. DECRA is warrantied for winds up to 120 mph.

2 – Protection from wind-driven rain

High winds don’t just cause visible damage. They can also push rain into tiny gaps in a roof, leading to hidden leaks and costly water damage inside your home.

Every DECRA product meets the strict TAS-100 wind-driven rain test, a requirement for selling roofing in South Florida’s High-Velocity Hurricane Zones (HVHZ), one of the most hurricane-prone regions in the U.S.

3 – High fire rating

Wildfires are no longer just a concern for the West Coast. Recent years have seen devastating fires across the Northeast and other unexpected regions.

DECRA is rated Class A–the highest fire resistance rating available. Unlike flammable roofing materials, DECRA does not ignite from embers or flames, offering critical protection against wildfires.

4 – Built for heavy snow loads

Ice dams, freezing temperatures and repeated freeze/thaw cycles can take a devastating toll on your roof. DECRA’s lightweight nature supports heavy snow loads without sagging. Its nonporous texture also helps snow and ice slide right off the roof before it can accumulate, preventing ice dams.

DECRA gives advice for maintaining stone-coated metal roofing, without sacrificing integrity.

Maintaining a stone-coated metal roof doesn’t have to be a headache. DECRA Metal Roofing, the original manufacturer of stone-coated metal roofing, has outlined best practices for keeping these roofs free from mold, algae and lichen, helping homeowners extend the life of their investment without causing unintended damage.

While these roofs are marketed for their durability and ease of maintenance, they’re not immune to environmental wear, especially in shaded areas or near trees. “Stone-coated metal roofing is an excellent solution for anyone looking for an easy-to-clean surface,” DECRA notes. But proper upkeep is critical to ensure long-lasting performance.

The first and most important rule? Stay safe. DECRA emphasizes fall protection and encourages the use of scaffolding, proper ladders and personal safety equipment. Homeowners should also disconnect any rainwater harvesting systems before startedthe cleaning process and let the roof naturally rinse through several rainfalls before reconnecting.

In terms of cleaning techniques, less is more. Avoid using pressure over 500 PSI or water hotter than 160°F. DECRA recommends a gentle rinse with a garden hose and a roof-safe cleaner.

Not all cleaning products are equal. DECRA explicitly warns against copper and iron-based solutions, which can accelerate corrosion or leave rust stains. Instead, they recommend safer options, likeWet & Forget Outdoor and Bayer Advanced 2-in-1 Moss & Algae Killer.

Routine maintenance also goes a long way. Trimming nearby branches, clearing debris and cleaning out gutters can significantly reduce organic buildup and water pooling, which often accelerates mold and algae growth.

Stone-coated metal roofing is a smart, long-term choice not just for its durability but for its relatively simple upkeep. With the right tools and techniques, homeowners can maintain a pristine roof without having to use harsh chemicals.
