Do the math once. Never do it again. That’s the power behind Custom Measurements in Roof Hub.

Every contractor calculates differently. Some build waste into their measurements while others layer it on top. Some markets require ice and water on valleys only while others include valleys and eaves. And for many teams, those rules live in spreadsheets, notebooks or tribal knowledge in someone’s head.

At SRS Distribution, we recognized that manual math takes valuable time away from the pro. Custom Measurements was built to solve that. It allows contractors to embed their own rules directly into ordering templates, so calculations run automatically across every estimate and order. Instead of rebuilding formulas on every job, your business logic applies consistently in the background.

Bring your measurements in and let the system work

Custom Measurements works seamlessly with the measurements you already rely on. In Roof Hub, you can pull measurement reports directly from partners like Eagleview, HOVER and GAF QuickMeasure or enter your own measurements manually. Once measurements are in place, your custom rules automatically calculate quantities across the template with no extra steps.

The result is a streamlined workflow that starts with trusted data and ends with accurate estimates and orders.

Build once. Scale everywhere.

Estimating should not mean repeating the same math. With Custom Measurements, you define your calculation rules once and apply them everywhere. Whether based on total roof area, hips, valleys or other job-specific factors, calculations run automatically within your templates.

This drives consistency across teams, improves speed and reduces costly mistakes.

Your workflow. Your standards. Built in.

No two contractors run their business the same way. Custom Measurements gives you the flexibility to build templates around how you calculate, price and execute jobs. By embedding your standards directly into Roof Hub Estimator templates, every estimate stays aligned with your process while scaling accuracy across your operation. The result? Less math, fewer mistakes and faster execution.

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) has completed its annual Accident Prevention Contest and is proud to recognize 82 asphalt roofing manufacturing facilities for their workplace safety, specifically low incident rates among workers.

Facilities that entered the 2025 Accident Prevention Contest were judged based on ARMA criteria derived from the standards set by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). This information is gathered through quarterly safety data reports from the past calendar year.

“We are proud of the commitment that ARMA members have to a safe work environment for all employees,” said ARMA’s executive vice president Reed Hitchcock. “These facilities continue to maintain high standards in plant health and safety.”

Every year, ARMA’s manufacturer members are invited to participate in the Accident Prevention Contest by submitting data from their entire company, a specific division or an individual plant or mill in North America. Winners are honored in four different categories with a “perfect” score, meaning that zero safety incidents were recorded.

Science-based roofing standards are helping communities reduce storm damage and improve long-term resilience.

Across the United States, communities are confronting a shared and escalating challenge: how to build neighborhoods that can withstand increasingly severe weather. From hurricanes along the Gulf Coast to inland hailstorms and tornadoes, both the frequency and cost of natural disasters are rising, placing sustained pressure on housing systems and public infrastructure. In response, resilience is no longer a secondary consideration; it is becoming a central metric in how cities plan, invest and prepare for the future. Increasingly, that conversation is starting at the top, with the roof, as companies like GAF help drive solutions focused on strengthening residential and community-level performance.

This shift is grounded in both economic and practical realities. According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, every dollar invested in storm preparedness can save up to $7 in post-disaster recovery costs. That return is driving policymakers, insurers and homeowners to prioritize proactive solutions that reduce damage before it occurs rather than relying solely on recovery efforts after the fact.

Within that broader movement, the FORTIFIED™ Standard is emerging as a clear framework for improving residential resilience. Developed by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS), the program applies decades of scientific research to establish above-code performance requirements for roofing systems. These standards are designed to strengthen a roof’s ability to withstand high winds, heavy rain and hail; conditions that are increasingly common across both coastal and inland markets.

In 2025, GAF announced an alliance with IBHS to expand access to FORTIFIED™ Roof systems nationwide, a move aimed at accelerating adoption and making these protections more widely available. The results of this approach are already evident. After Hurricane Sally struck Alabama in 2020, FORTIFIED™ homes experienced 73% fewer insurance claims and 20% lower loss severity compared to non-FORTIFIED™ homes. Researchers estimate that if all homes in the storm’s path had met the standard, $140 million in damages could have been avoided.

“A stronger roof can prevent damage from cascading from a minor repair to major losses.” “Science shows that resilience works,” says Fred Malik, managing director of FORTIFIED™ at IBHS. “And research clearly shows that resilience works.”

As adoption grows, workforce readiness remains a critical factor. To address this, GAF is investing in contractor training through its Center for the Advancement of Roofing Excellence (CARE) program, equipping roofing professionals with the knowledge and skills required to install FORTIFIED™ systems at scale.

“Contractors who go through this program are investing in the safety of their communities,” said Mike Thomas, Director of External Learning and Development, Storm Restoration at GAF. “Through this training and our product offerings, we are raising the bar for roofing standards nationwide and expanding access to IBHS' FORTIFIED™ solutions that deliver roofs designed to be stronger and more durable against severe weather.”

As cities continue to evaluate long-term resilience strategies, roofing is emerging as one of the most practical and scalable points of intervention. When roofs perform as intended, damage is contained, recovery timelines shorten and communities remain more stable; reinforcing a broader industry understanding that resilience begins with the fundamentals.

GAF, North America’s largest roofing and waterproofing manufacturer, has partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Tuscaloosa to provide a new FORTIFIED Roof™ for a Tuscaloosa veteran. This install kicks off a joint effort between GAF, Habitat Tuscaloosa and Strengthen Alabama Homes (SAH) to expand access to storm-resilient roofing systems in West Alabama. Through this program, eligible homeowners can access grants to install a FORTIFIED Roof™ system with materials donated by GAF and installed by a GAF Master Elite® contractor.

The first completed project supports Ms. Evelyn Smith, a retired Army veteran and longtime Tuscaloosa resident, whose home was in need of critical roof replacement for her aging roof following years of wear and tear. “I am so grateful and excited about my new roof,” said Ms. Smith. “I just can’t express how happy I am that I was chosen."

Through this collaboration, her home now features a FORTIFIED Roof, a nationally recognized roofing method developed by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) to help protect homes from severe weather, including high winds and heavy rain.

For this project, GAF donated roofing materials and provided additional support to help the home meet FORTIFIED Roof standards, while local GAF-certified contractor Alliance Roofing donated labor for the installation. As part of its nearly 50-year presence in Tuscaloosa, GAF continues to invest in the community through partnerships that help strengthen local homes and neighborhoods including volunteering time and expertise, and donating product. In the last ten years alone, the team at GAF's Tuscaloosa manufacturing plant has produced and donated roofing materials to more than 100 homes.

“A FORTIFIED Roof can make a meaningful difference for homeowners, and expanding access to that level of protection is critical in communities that frequently face severe weather like Tuscaloosa,” said Mike Thomas, director of external learning & development, storm restoration at GAF. “We’re proud to continue our partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Tuscaloosa to support those in our local community and help make homes across the region more resilient.”

The initiative focuses on upgrading existing homes with FORTIFIED Roof systems that can help reduce storm damage and may lower insurance costs while increasing home value.

“GAF has been a terrific partner in this neighborhood for years and their support allows us to extend the impact of this effort and serve more homeowners in need,” said Ellen Potts,  executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Tuscaloosa. “Ms. Smith has given so much through her service, and we’re honored to help ensure her home is safe, secure and better prepared for whatever weather comes next.”

This project is part of GAF Community Matters, GAF’s social impact initiative focused on building resilient communities by leveraging roofing expertise, resources and products to make a positive, lasting difference.
Learn how contractors can successfully install single-ply roofing systems when temperatures fall below 40°F.

The arrival of colder weather does not necessarily mean roofing work must stop. Industry guidance from GAF indicates that single-ply systems such as EverGuard® TPO and PVC can still be installed successfully during cooler conditions, provided contractors plan carefully and follow manufacturer recommendations designed for cold-weather applications.

In roofing, cool weather installation generally refers to ambient temperatures below 40°F (4.4°C). Yet temperature alone does not determine whether a project can move forward. Contractors must also evaluate jobsite conditions such as wind chill, surface temperature, humidity, precipitation and the level of sun exposure throughout the day. These factors collectively influence how roofing materials behave during installation and ultimately affect the quality of the finished system.

Because colder environments introduce additional risks, thorough planning becomes a critical part of the process. One important step is structuring the work schedule so crews can complete each section of the roof during a single work period. Leaving areas partially finished overnight can expose materials to moisture or freezing conditions, increasing the potential for membrane wrinkling, adhesion failures, poor welds and blistering.

Proper material handling is equally important as temperatures decline. Water-based products must be stored in warm conditions to prevent freezing, while solvent-based adhesives must reach specific temperature thresholds before they can perform as intended. Contractors may rely on heat blankets or temperature-controlled storage to maintain those conditions. Membranes should also remain in controlled storage until installation because thermoplastic materials become stiffer in cold weather, making them more difficult to unroll and position on the roof.

Installation practices may also require adjustment in cooler conditions. Lower temperatures often require slower welder speeds so equipment can deliver sufficient heat to create durable seams. Because weather conditions can change throughout the day, crews should perform field test welds regularly to confirm proper equipment settings. Routine quality checks, including probing seams and conducting end-of-day inspections, help verify that the system is performing as expected.

Worker safety is another important consideration. Cold environments can expose crews to cold stress, making proper protective clothing, portable heaters and designated warming areas essential parts of the jobsite plan.

For contractors determining whether a project can proceed in cooler conditions, GAF Design Services provides technical support and resources to help evaluate building needs and guide installation decisions.

Best practices for cool weather application

In an article by GAF, they share best practice recommendations for cool weather application that can help contractors achieve a quality installation in temperatures below 40°F. Here are some key components to keep in mind:

Membrane storage. By leaving membrane rolls in storage until ready to install, they will remain more flexible and easier to work with.

Seam welding settings. Outdoor conditions play a big role in your welder settings. Lower air temperatures will typically require slower speed settings, allowing the welder to deliver the additional heat energy needed to compensate for the cooler conditions. Hand welders will require consideration and adjustment for cooler temperatures.

Field test welds. Field test welds are critical to finding the correct settings for your welders. Conditions and temperatures can change throughout the day, so test welds will need to be done several times per day. Always test in the morning before work begins, after any extended breaks, and after any changes in the weather, such as a change in wind speed or temperature. Daily quality control checks should be done, including probing and checking seams at the end of the workday.

Adhesives, sealants and primers. Lower temperatures mean these products will take longer to flash off and dry. Also, be aware of the "working time" for solvent-based spray adhesives. The working time is the time between flash off and when the adhesive no longer has any tack. In cooler weather, the working time of solvent-based spray adhesives can diminish significantly. As such, always store these products in warmer temperatures and leave them stored until ready to use. Make sure to bring them up to and maintain the manufacturer's recommended temperature using heat boxes or heat blankets before use and during use, if necessary.

Fasteners. When installing EverGuard® TPO and PVC in temperatures below 40°F using fasteners, wrinkles may form due to the expansion and contraction caused by temperature fluctuations. GAF advises that wrinkles less than one inch high when pressed together typically won't affect the integrity of the system. It's recommended to perform test welds throughout the day to ensure the settings on your RhinoBond® induction tool are correct.
