Green Link Engineering outlines how rooftop support design helps meet growing energy and environmental demands.

As energy costs continue to rise, professionals across the trades are being called to rethink how efficiency, sustainability and equipment design intersect. In a webinar titled “Weathering the Storm with Rooftop Supports,” Green Link Engineering’s Kaitlyn Briggs and Angela Peck explored how rooftop supports are becoming an essential part of the sustainable construction conversation.

Founded in 2016, Green Link focuses on developing efficient, eco-friendly solutions for modern buildings. Kaitlyn began the session by addressing the 25% increase in energy costs over the past decade and the growing demand for energy-efficient HVAC systems. With new units being smaller, lighter and more powerful, many are now installed on rooftops to reduce noise, save space and simplify maintenance.

However, Kaitlyn emphasized that proper rooftop support is critical to maximizing performance, safety and longevity. Traditional wooden supports can rot and deform, leading to misalignment, leaks and costly repairs. In contrast, Green Link’s custom-engineered StrutFrames and KnuckleHead systems are designed to withstand wind pressure, snow load and uneven roof surfaces. The company offers adjustable, non-penetrating solutions made from materials such as galvanized steel, aluminum or stainless steel to fit different environmental conditions.

During the Q&A session, Angela detailed how Green Link uses ASCE 7 standards to account for wind loads, outlined slope and weight guidelines and shared where professionals can access BIM resources for product specification. She also highlighted the company’s polyether-based Adhesive/Sealant as a reliable alternative to mechanical fastening when roof penetration is not an option.

With sustainability and cost efficiency driving construction decisions, well-supported rooftop systems are proving essential for long-term building performance.

Watch the full webinar to learn more about energy-efficient rooftop supports and how Green Link Engineering is helping contractors weather the storm toward a sustainable future.

After years of rigorous testing and refinement, the MetalHead support system sets a new benchmark for durability and design excellence in rooftop applications.

When you're dealing with heavy pipes, duct systems and HVAC/R equipment, you need more than just a support system — you need strength, durability and reliability you can count on for years to come. That’s why Green Link, Inc. has spent the last few years tirelessly testing, modifying and improving the MetalHead triangular support, and why we are excited to announce that, as of September 9, 2025, we have officially been awarded the design patent for this innovative support solution.

Why choose Green Link MetalHead?

1 – Unmatched strength & durability

The Green Link MetalHead isn’t just another rooftop support – it's an engineering marvel. With 100-mil aluminum walls and a 10,000 pound vertical compression threshold (more than 20x the weight limit of a standard rubber-based block), the MetalHead is built to handle the toughest loads, no matter how demanding your application. Its heavy-duty triangular design provides a 50 square inch base for unbeatable stability and weight distribution.

2 – Protect your roof & equipment

Unlike traditional supports, the (optional) black PEF pad provides an additional layer of protection, preventing abrasion and damage to your roof membranes, whether it's PVC, TPO, EPDM or asphalt-based roofing. This extra protection ensures your system stays intact and your roof is protected, preserving its integrity for years to come.

3 – Easy installation & customization

The MetalHead is designed for quick and easy installation – weighing in at just 2 pounds, the MetalHead has a built-in strut channel compatible with all standard strut hardware and accessories. The system’s flexibility allows you to tailor it to your project, whether it calls for a single support point or a large installation.

4 – Long-term value & sustainability

The Green Link MetalHead is not just a short-term fix; it's an investment in your infrastructure. Built for reuse and recycling, coupled with its resistance to oxidation, salt spray and mild acids, this system offers exceptional long-term value, saving you time and money on replacements. Plus, it’s made in the USA and backed by a 20-year limited warranty, ensuring you have peace of mind for decades.

5 – Simplified installation with Snap-N-Strut

Forget the hassle of using wrenches or impact guns! With Snap-N-Strut, installation is as simple as twisting the unit directly into the MetalHead strut channel, snapping the pipe into place and clipping the Snap-N-Strut shut. These reliable and secure supports are ideal for pipes ranging from ¼”OD to 4”OD.

Refer to manufacturer guidelines: Always consult the manufacturer’s guidelines for the specific pipe being installed. They will often provide recommendations for support spacing.

Consider pipe material and diameter: Different materials and pipe diameters may require varying support spacing. Ensure that your KnuckleHead supports are suitable for the pipes in question.

Refer to local building codes for pipe spacing guidelines: Keep in mind that temperature could cause pipe sagging and pipe support spacing may need to be adjusted to avoid this situation. For Steel Pipes, the spacing will likely be 7-10 feet when using Lite Pipe and Heavy Pipe KnuckleHead supports. For PVC pipes spacing from 2-7.5 feet when using Lite and Heavy Pipe KnuckleHeads, please see our technical guide for more information.

KnuckleHeads prove that even the smallest details can make a big difference in the grand scheme of construction.
Green Link Engineering has changed the HVAC and roofing communities by providing durable and professional supports to contractors on the roof.

Your roof and equipment are only as durable as the supports used for accessories. HVAC/R equipment is particularly problematic in this area because often, blocks of wood are used to support the installation of new equipment. However, this can rot or warp throughout the years when constantly exposed to the elements. Green Link is committed to improving the durability and design of supports throughout the industry to ensure equipment and roofing systems are protected.

Located in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Green Link opened its doors with a commitment to contractor driven products. Debuting with their iconic KnuckleHead – a gray, glass-reinforced, UV-resistant, military grade nylon resin support with safety yellow accessories – Green Link took the HVAC/R and roofing communities by storm.

The KnuckleHead is available in five styles that can be attached with an extension or directly to one of the two bases. It is incredibly versatile, and its unique design allows for up to one inch of built-in adjustment for onsite leveling. Applications include strut, pipe, solar and paver supports, with the strut supports forming the base for some of their fully adjustable mechanical supports.

The mechanical supports, available in low profile and elevated configurations, are ideal for all models of HVAC equipment; they are fully customizable in length and width and customizable up to 24 inches in height. Available in single unit and multi-unit configuration banks, Green Link’s in-house engineers are available for every project to ensure that your equipment is supported as efficiently as possible.

The KnuckleHeads and the mechanical supports can be mounted on one of Green Link’s two bases – the universal base or the big base (which is recommended for supports over 12 inches). These bases can be loose laid, fastened to the roof mechanically or adhered with Green Link’s specially formulated adhesive/sealant, which provides up to 275 psi bond strength when applied to single-ply or built-up roof membranes.

Green Link’s newest product, the MetalHead, is a triangular shaped support topped with a 1-5/8 inch by 1-5/8 inch strut channel, made from anodized aluminum and compatible with all standard strut accessories. The MetalHead can support up to ten thousand pounds, and its applications include pipe, duct and electrical conduit support. Green Link’s engineers recommend the MetalHead specifically for non-sloped projects and when replacing supports of a similar function.

No matter what kind of support you need, from a line of Lite Pipe KnuckleHeads to support water lines or a full roof of mechanical support assemblies for an apartment building’s worth of HVAC equipment, Green Link will work with you to find a custom, cost effective solution to protect your roof, your equipment and your investment.

Dana: Well, we've had a lot of exciting changes this year. First, phenomenally we've grown, which is amazing. We're finally getting to that point where we can see the growth happening.

Karen Edwards: That's exciting.

Dana: That's really great. And we have two new people on staff, and I'm very excited. I'd like to talk about them for a minute.

Karen Edwards: Yeah.

Dana: We have a full-time engineer now. His name is Brandon Cora. He joined us in April, so he's with us full-time now. And it's very helpful because we're able to do takeoffs quicker, and we've really, really expanded our business into doing a lot more mechanical supports and duct supports. So it's good to have a full-time engineer on staff. We also just recently hired the most amazing woman in the world, and her name is Kaitlyn Briggs, and I'm hoping that, Karen, you'll get to interview her at some time. But Kaitlyn came to us to work as an administrative assistant, and we found out that she has all this background in social media and web development. So she's been helping us tremendously in working with all of our vendor partners in social media. So it's been very exciting times.

Karen Edwards: Fantastic. Yeah. And now for those who don't know, Green Link makes rooftop supports for mechanical equipment, pipes-

Dana: Duct work.

Karen Edwards: Duct work.

Dana: All kinds of things. If you put it on a roof, including solar panels, we can support it. And it's just been a phenomenal year at Green Link. We've been really excited. We're excited about all the challenges of this next year and the phenomenal growth we're having.

Karen Edwards: That is really, really cool. And what I remember last year when we talked, you brought one so that I could feel it, touch it, because show and tell. We love that. It was so lightweight.

Dana: That was our metalhead. And surprisingly, we introduced that on the market last year. It was slow to move into the marketplace, but I'm excited to announce that it's becoming our number three seller now. So it's been a very, very, very huge new item in our stockpiles.

Karen Edwards: Well, it just makes sense because how many times do you go up on a roof and you see a rotting block of wood supporting something.

Dana: Or a rotting rubber support.

Karen Edwards: Or a rotting rubber support. Yeah, good point. So what are these made out of?

Dana: They're made anodized aluminum, no finished. And they do have an integrated yellow safety pad, and they run out to a contractor. They're approximately $25 a piece. They include a 20-year material warranty, which is amazing. We have a longer warranty than any of our competitors in the marketplace.

Karen Edwards: That's fantastic. Wow. Now, I know you probably want to walk around the show a little bit because you're catching a flight later today.

Dana: Yeah.

Karen Edwards: But your team's here, right?

Dana: Yes. My team is here. They should be by, so Dan Olinger, our president is here. One of our sales, or two of our sales reps are here. Ted McGee, who covers the southeast for us. And Jason who covers South Carolina and North Carolina. So I'm hoping that they'll stop by and say hi to you as well.

Karen Edwards: Excellent. And if you are coming out to the show, be sure to visit the Green Link booth.

Dana: We don't have a booth this year, Karen. We're not exhibiting this year. Okay. We took one year off of the roofing market, and we'll hope to be back next year.

Karen Edwards: I hope you are too, because there's nothing like seeing and feeling and touching. So since they're not here, we want you to go to their Roofer's Coffee Shop directory. You'll find all the information about their products. You'll find out how to get in touch with them. There's links to the website and whatever you need to know about Green Link. So thank you all for watching. Dana, it's great always to see you.

Dana: It's always wonderful to see you.

Karen Edwards: I'm looking forward to the next time already.

Dana: Yes.

Karen Edwards: And tune in throughout the day because we'll be bringing you these videos live all day long on our YouTube channel. And now since I don't have a camera operator, I'm just going to have to turn it off like this.

Dana: Okay. Thank you, Karen.

Karen Edwards: Bye.

            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

By Green Link.

Green Link Vice President Lisa Mulder says she expects growth as sustainability becomes a larger priority. Learn more about what she sees for the future of Green Link.

Green Link Engineering is a manufacturing company that makes advanced architectural supports for pipes, ducts, and HVAC/R equipment. Experts in their industry, Green Link develops ground-mounted and rooftop equipment that is sustainable, durable, cost-effective, versatile, and informed by direct contractor feedback. Read on to learn what Vice President Lisa Mulder has to say about the company and where they are going in the future.

1 - Main areas of activity of the company?

Green Link manufactures our “Universal” and “Big” Bases (7” and 12” in diameter, respectively) which attach to five “KnuckleHeads,” and the Strut Frame Stanchion answering each commercial roof project’s challenges with tremendous versatility. Each KnuckleHead has level-ability up to one inch to accommodate inevitably varying rooftop surfaces where conduit and mechanical equipment must remain level to properly function. Strut Frame Stanchions of a wider range of height adjustability for installation of duct, elevated pipes and mechanical equipment. Made of military- and auto-grade, weather-impervious, glass-reinforced nylon with a constant operating temperature of 275 degrees Fahrenheit, Green Link’s seven head types include strut, stanchion, light pipe, heavy pipe, solar, paver and pedestal.

Each of these may be either loose-laid (to avoid roof membrane penetration, maintaining the roofing warranty), mechanically attached via our bases’ four center holes, and/or, for the strongest attachment, chemically bonded with our Green Link Adhesive/Sealant for durable adhesion to nearly any roof membrane (PVC, primed TPO, modified bitumen, EPDM, etc.). We are a trusted brand in no small part due to our hyper-responsive customer service and in-house engineers and technical advisors who, without extra charge to customers, ensure each project is sound before we recommend our system’s solution.

We also designed our latest product, the MetalHead, described below.

2 - What is newsworthy about our new products?

There is currently nothing on the supports market as durable or versatile as ours, and yet we remain cost-competitive. We consistently have the pleasure of educating contractors and distributors about the “cost vs. the price,” given that our KnuckleHead and MetalHead products will outlast the life of the roof, each with extensive warranties (respectively 10- and 20-years), versus 5-6 years maximum for rubber crumb products or toxin-leaching wooden blocks.

The MetalHead is our latest product. Each is an anodized, sealed extruded aluminum block support (9.5” wide x 5” tall) with an incorporated strut channel top, weighing a mere two pounds but able to withstand over 10,000 pounds compression. The line of accessories to accompany the MetalHead provides broad versatility, including a stackable manifold which resolves dissimilar metal challenges when accommodating multiple metal lines. Nearly indestructible and impervious to weathering, even on coastal areas, MetalHeads will never be thrown in the landfill; they will be used again on the next job or are fully recyclable.

3 - What are our product lines/ranges?

In addition to our KnuckleHead and MetalHead lines — utilizing our strut and stanchion KnuckleHeads — Green Link’s best seller systems offer ability to vertically elevate mechanical equipment and/or pipe and duct supports via low-profile or elevated Green Link Strut Frames, including ability to directly incorporate an electrical box. We are also conducting testing on the “Magneto” a high-powered magnetic attachment system, as well as other roof deck attachment solutions which resolve waterproofing challenges where membrane penetrations are necessary.

4 - What can we comment about our market trends?

The effects of climate change are many and worsening; we are neither immune nor tone-deaf to that. As our tagline denotes, we are committed to sustainability in all we do. The lifecycles of Green Link products are deliberate and will not be soon — if ever — landfill-bound, as they can be reused for the next job or recycled. Plastic and metal manufacturing has a long road ahead toward reaching necessary efficiency and technical innovation before they may be produced with low-/no-greenhouse gas emissions; until then, we remain far ahead of our competition in producing sustainable, recyclable products with high functional and aesthetic value.

5 - What estimations do we have for 2022?

Expect great things! Green Link is on track to reach our internal sales goals and representatives getting closer to target sales per thousand (population) in each respective sales territory. With increased investment in their testing, we will also be able to fully promote our lesser-selling items and round out our brand’s complementary systems offerings. We cannot wait to grace the world’s commercial roofs with our products we love to share, quietly and sustainably improving people’s lives.
