2026 Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards winners

Gold Award winner: HER Roofing Co. Inc. – The Settlemier House (Portland, Oregon)

Project overview: When it came time to restore the roof of the historic 1892 Settlemier House, HER Roofing Co. Inc. delivered a solution that balanced preservation, performance and architectural integrity. The project included a full shake tear-off and re-roof of a steep-slope system, highlighted by a technically demanding cone roof. Asphalt shingles were chosen for their fire resistance, durability and flexibility. Malarkey Legacy® Shingles with Scotchgard™ in Black Oak provided a historically appropriate aesthetic suited to the Pacific Northwest’s climate. The cone required custom vertical plywood installation more than 50 feet in the air, completed safely with an 80-foot lift. Rotted curved wooden gutters were custom fabricated and installed, and the restored copper spire returned to the top.

Silver Award winner: Wedge Roofing – California Mid-Century Gothic (Sebastopol, California)

Project overview: The California Mid-Century Gothic project presented San Francisco Bay Area’s Wedge Roofing with one of Northern California’s most architecturally complex steep-slope projects. The mid-1960s church features a rare hyperbolic paraboloid roof rising from a 6/12 pitch to vertical, making the roof both its most striking feature and its greatest challenge. Asphalt shingles were capable of meeting the building’s geometric and structural demands. Owens Corning® TruDefinition® Duration® Shingles in Brownwood flexed to follow the compound curves while allowing secure fastening on near-vertical surfaces, preserving the sculptural form without overloading the original structure. The project required rebuilding the ridge with Douglas fir decking and structural plywood, integrating solar-powered and fixed Velux skylights, and installing shingles over steep slopes using toe-jacks and fall protection. Two-ply modified bitumen and silicone-coated flat areas completed the system.

Bronze Award winner: Priddy Roofing and Exteriors – The Double Dome (Mercer, Pennsylvania)

Project overview: Homeowners seeking to replace the roof on a highly unconventional residence turned to Priddy Roofing and Exteriors for a project defined by dual interconnected geodesic domes. With 238 unique facets, each with its own pitch, angle and drainage direction, the roof presented a highly complex asphalt roofing installation. Owens Corning® TruDefinition® Duration® Shingles in Williamsburg Gray provided the flexibility to follow the compound curves while maintaining strong fastening and sealant adhesion. Full-coverage ice and water shield created a redundant water-resistant barrier across the constantly changing planes. The team installed the roof one facet at a time, with each course measured, cut, aligned, hand-sealed and hand-nailed. Custom flashings accommodated triangular and irregularly shaped windows, while a perimeter intake and site-built circular ridge vent restored ventilation.

Best-in-Class Award winner, Commercial/Mixed Use Category: KPost Roofing & Waterproofing - National Medal of Honor Museum (Arlington, Texas)

Project overview: The National Medal of Honor Museum in Arlington, Texas, designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects, challenged KPost Roofing & Waterproofing with a complex low-slope roofing project on a building of profound national significance. The roof spans multiple elevations, sloped planes and over 450 structural steel penetrations, requiring precision, durability and aesthetic excellence. SOPREMA SBS-modified bitumen, paired with Alsan RS liquid-applied detailing, provided long-term performance, while lightweight insulating concrete, metal panels and Kingspan insulated panels were integrated to ensure slope-to-drain functionality, continuity and water resistance across all areas. Careful sequencing and meticulous installation preserved the architectural intent, protected the building and supported the museum’s mission.

The International Roofing Expo provided the perfect backdrop to celebrate these industry awards, with attendees engaging in networking opportunities, photo sessions and discussions on the latest advancements in asphalt roofing.

This award-winning historic restoration showcases craftsmanship, leadership and the power of asphalt roofing.

HER Roofing Co. Inc. has earned the Gold Award in the 2026 Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards presented by the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA), standing out among the top asphalt roofing projects across North America. The award recognizes HER Roofing’s exceptional work on the historic Settlemier House, an iconic 1892 home in Oregon that required a careful balance of craftsmanship, performance and respect for architectural heritage.

The award-winning project included a full tear-off of the original wood shake roof and installation of a new steep-slope asphalt roofing system. One of the most complex elements was the home’s distinctive cone roof, which demanded detailed planning and precise execution. To meet both performance and aesthetic requirements, the HER Roofing team selected Malarkey Legacy® shingles with Scotchgard™ in Black Oak, chosen for their Class A fire resistance and ability to complement the historic character of the structure.

The challenges went far beyond materials alone. The cone roof’s original spaced sheathing required the crew to vertically score and install plywood more than 50 feet above ground to create a stable deck. An 80-foot lift was used to safely complete the work. The team also addressed rotted curved wood gutters wrapping the cone and coordinated custom fabrication to maintain the building’s original look. Once the roofing was complete, the home’s original copper spire was carefully reinstalled, preserving one of its most recognizable architectural features.

The project was completed in just two weeks by a seven-person crew and serves as a powerful example of how asphalt roofing can deliver durability, safety and beauty, even on highly detailed historic structures.

Behind the Gold Award is a company known for both technical expertise and strong values. Based in Portland, Oregon, HER Roofing Co. Inc. is a 100 percent woman-owned roofing and gutter contractor led by founder Jana Zavala. The company’s name reflects its core principles of Honesty, Equality and Respect, values that are evident in every project they take on.

Jana brings decades of roofing experience to HER Roofing, including leadership roles with major manufacturers and years spent training contractors across the country. She is also a founding member of National Women in Roofing and a well-respected voice in the industry.

HER Roofing is also a proud member of the R-Club, RoofersCoffeeShop’s exclusive contractor community that supports visibility, education, networking and digital growth for roofing professionals. R-Club contractors are committed to professionalism and ongoing improvement, qualities clearly reflected in this Gold Award-winning project.

This national recognition reinforces what many in the industry already know: HER Roofing delivers outstanding craftsmanship, thoughtful leadership and roofs built to last.

HER Roofing blended modern materials with historic sensitivity on a demanding cone roof project.

It was early November 2024 when HER Roofing signed the contract to roof the Settlemier House, in Woodburn, Oregon. Built in 1892, the historic house had wood shakes and needed to be converted to composition shingles. The installation had to wait until spring 2025 because a large shake tear-off on a historic home in the Pacific Northwest had weather challenges.

Roofing the Settlemier house was not an easy task. The most noticeable feature of the house was the 50-foot-tall cone roof that needed plywood, and inside the cone roof lived a fairly large family of bats. The roof removal and sheathing took two days. Once the roof was removed, a section of wooden gutter below the cone was exposed and found to be damaged by rot. HER Roofing immediately looked for a source to furnish a new section of curved wooden gutter. In the meantime, plywood had to be scored to curve around the cone roof. Once the roof had plywood, HER Roofing installed Malarkey Arctic Seal down valleys and penetrations. Then, APOC Weather-Armor underlayment on the rest of the roof.

The new section of curved gutter had to be templated twice by the manufacturer, and it took six weeks to make. But the new gutter was beautiful in raw form, and the installation appeared to have no seams. The property owner chose Malarkey Legacy in Black Oak for the roof. An 80-foot lift was rented to safely roof around the cone. Once the roof was installed, HER Roofing began restoration of the old wooden gutters; the gutters were stripped and patched before a new copper metal lining was installed. Once the lining was in place, Gaco S4200 Silicone was used to coat the inside of the gutter. Next, new metal downspouts were installed.

The final touch was the restored copper spire that sat atop the cone. The new roof took about one and a half weeks, and the new gutter took about two months (including manufacturing the new curved section). Overall, HER Roofing has a roof to be proud of with a happy customer.

“HER Roofing did a fantastic job on what was a challenging roof. Their professionalism and attention to detail were appreciated. Jana and her crew are top-notch notch" says Daniel Dinges, Settlemier property owner.

Over the decades she spent on that side of the table, she learned and built her network.

Jana explained, “I learned a ton from manufacturing, everything from how a shingle is made, how commercial products or systems are done, to warranties. And then, with going out in the field, and being an educator, and having more of a consultative approach to roofing contractors, I met a ton of people just in the industry by going to the different shows. I had a big network, and starting my own company just felt like the natural next step.”

And starting her own company is exactly what she did, with HER Roofing going into business in Portland, Oregon over six years ago now!

As for Michelle, her story starts as an insurance adjuster. And her experience in that role gave her a powerful combination of knowledge and confidence.

Michelle explained, “Being a woman adjuster, getting up on the roof, you walk in at a disadvantage, you walk in with the homeowner thinking that you don't know what you're doing, because you're a woman. And then, you meet their contractor and the contractor thinks you don't know anything. So, I equipped myself with the knowledge so I wouldn’t walk into a situation where I was already at a disadvantage and continue to portray that.”

Now, decades later, Michelle uses that experience of breaking stereotypes as a woman getting onto the roof to keep driving her forward as one of the founders and leaders at Hall Roofing.

Rachel’s story starts a couple decades ago when she was 17 and working at a remodeling company on the admin side. It was in that position that she fell in love with working to build relationships and solutions for clients, which is what inspired her to start Proficient Construction in 2013.

She explained, “I felt like the importance of a relationship-based mentality with customers can get drowned out, especially when you are competing with some of these bigger roofing companies where they're doing volume. So, with Proficient Roofing, I made sure everything was relationship-based. In my first five years I spent barely any money on marketing. It was all networking, establishing relationships and building a core group of referral partners.”

While all three of these women’s stories vary in location and timing, they all share one driving factor – community. Michelle explained, “We're all from different states, different areas, so a lot of experiences are different. But I would say that community is always key. The people involved, your village, all have to be on the same page working towards that mission, that vision that you have. And then, get the community built into that.” Rachel added, “I agree, the best thing that I did in my career is I found the people that were doing it really well in the industry. For example, I joined National Women in Roofing (NWIR) and they became my mentors. Like Michelle said, it’s so important to be able to surround yourself with really good people that want to see you succeed.”

A damaged or leaking roof is a big concern, learn how to see the signs before it becomes a major problem.

Editor’s note: Share this article with homeowners to educate them on the signs of roof damage and when to notify a roofer for further inspection.

One of the most stressful times as a homeowner is when something goes wrong, such as a roof leak. This issue can result in even more subsequent problems if it is not addressed properly. You could end up dealing with not only a damaged roof, but also water damage, mold growth, wood rot and even structural issues. To avoid these issues, it is important to learn how to proactively identify issues on the roof and protect your home, your family and your wallet.

This does not mean you will never have issues. And that’s when experts like those at HER Roofing, who have over 20 years of experience helping with these kinds of emergencies, are your best resource. If you can identify the warning signs of a problem and call a professional in quickly, it will still minimize the damage to your home and, best-case-scenario, save you from a costly roof replacement.

1 - Water spots or stains on your ceiling or walls

If you ever see a brown spot in your ceiling or down the top part of your walls, don’t ignore it. It could indicate a roof leak and, if so, needs to be addressed promptly by a professional service. The source of the water damage could be damaged shingles, deteriorated flashing or other weaknesses that have allowed water to seep through the barrier meant to protect your home from leaks. Contacting an experienced roof leak repair service can ensure that the issue is addressed quickly and your peace of mind is restored.

2 - Missing, cracked or damaged shingles

Roof damage, such as missing or damaged shingles, is a serious threat to the structural integrity of your home. If left untreated, it could lead to potential water leaks in the attic and severe damage to your home’s structure. While missing or damaged shingles don’t always indicate a leak, if there is an exposed seam, it may be indicative of water coming in from the outside. It is important to inspect your roof regularly and take proactive steps like replacing any affected shingles now to avoid dealing with more costly repairs later.

3 - Rusted flashing

Brick chimneys may appear solid and secure. However, their exterior is vulnerable to deterioration from snow, rain and wind. If it’s made from galvanized steel, then this can begin to rust through at the bottom, leading to further damage to not just the masonry but also any overlays that were installed.

4 - Shiners

If the telltale signs of a water stain on your ceiling are not visible, you may still be able to detect this problem by looking at the underside of your roof. This is because shiners, nails not properly fixed into the framing member, can cause moisture buildup in cold attics when warm air from below escapes and condenses on the cold nail. The best way to spot these is on a cold night, as the nails appear frosted. During warmer days, the frost will melt, then freeze again at night as temperatures drop and this cycle repeats itself.

5 - Mold outlining under roof

Without kick-out flashing, where a roof dips down to meet the sidewall, roof runoff would flow down the sidewall and potentially seep behind any window or door trim below. This issue can go unnoticed for years, but eventually, rot could occur, which would destroy both the framing and sheathing of the wall.

6 - Stains around bathroom ceiling fan

When water stains appear around your bath fan’s ceiling, it could mean a few different things. The culprit may be a leak from the vent cap on your roof, but more often, it is caused by condensation. To prevent this from happening, the ducting connected to the bath fan must be adequately insulated so that humid air from inside your house doesn’t cause moisture buildup within the duct. Without proper insulation, condensation will form and pool beneath the fixture which can then drip down onto the ceiling in your bathroom.

7 - Sagging or rusted gutters

Gutter leaks can lead to serious issues if left unfixed, which is why it’s important to keep an eye out for any signs that they may be occurring. One of the most common causes of gutter leaks is rust. This is often compounded by clogs in the downspout or inside the gutters themselves – if you find that your gutters are sagging down despite no new rain, this could be a sign that they’ve been holding too much weight and need to be cleared. Ignoring a leaky gutter can lead to further damage like mold growth, cracks in your home’s foundation, broken windows and more expensive repair bills.

8 - Clogged soffits

Ventilation is an important part of maintaining the health of your home. An often-overlooked means of effective ventilation is the soffit vents located near the roof line. A properly functioning soffit system will ensure that stale, trapped air is released from the attic while drawing in fresh air from outside. Soffit vents can become easily clogged due to mold growth and moisture buildup in warmer months. A leaky roof or other related problems can cause this. So be sure to inspect these areas for any warning signs during your regular checkups.

Megan Ellsworth: Hi, my name is Megan Ellsworth here rooferscoffeeshop.com, and I am back again for a Roofer of the Month podcast. I am so excited to introduce Jana Zavala here and she is our Roofer of the Month for the RoofersCoffeeShop R-Club. Hi Jana, how are you doing?

Jana Zavala: Hi. Hi there. I'm great. How is everyone out there doing?

Megan Ellsworth: I hope you're doing well. So, let's just start out by having you introduce yourself and tell us about your company, how you started it and all that good stuff.

Jana Zavala: Yeah. Well, I'm Jana Zavala. I started HER Roofing company, on my fourth year now. I've been in the roofing industry since the late '90s, right around 96 is when I entered into distribution. Then from distribution, I went into manufacturing. I was in manufacturing for a very long time. Had worked for a couple of major roofing companies, GAF and Malarkey, was a regional manager and a national trainer. And then I decided the last thing I haven't done was contracting, so I went ahead and opened up my company and started in contracting. And one of the things a lot of people asked me is how did I end up in here? I don't have a brother, a dad, a boyfriend, a husband, I don't have anybody in the roofing industry. I did this all on my own. And I think it's important to foster other women getting into the roofing industry.

Megan Ellsworth: Yes, exactly. That is so amazing. I love it. Okay, so what kind of services does your company provide? Do you guys have a specialty?

Jana Zavala: Yes. So, we're a hundred percent residential. We do residential re-roofs, of course, roof repair. We do maintenance as well as gutters. And we do installations as well as ventilation, and we actually get called out for quite a bit of houses that need ventilation, added in ventilation as well as skylights. So, these are all things that are more retrofitted for the residential homeowner, and we really specialize for the residential side of business.

Megan Ellsworth: Very cool. That's fabulous. I love a skylight. Who doesn't? This is my favorite part of the interview and it is share something special that your company celebrates.

Jana Zavala: Yeah. So, the whole thing around my company is HER stands for honesty, equality, and respect, and that's very important to us. It's our core values as a company, we do celebrate it and talk about it. It's important that our customers feel comfortable in coming to us and having the conversations that we need to have and addressing any issues that they have in their home. And we're all about following those three steps all the way from when the phone call comes in to the end when we're closing out a job. It's very important for everyone at the company. We really strive on the equality and inclusivity, and of course the honesty and respect is very important.

Megan Ellsworth: I didn't know that's what HER stood for. That's so awesome. I love that. So, how do you all define superior customer service?

Jana Zavala: Well, the customer service happens right from the very beginning when the phone call comes in. And with technology these days, people want to be able to decide when they're at home after dinner that they need to get a new roof estimate. So, they hop on a website, they fill out a form, we get back to them and we can call them, we can text them. Everything is in a file. We actually have a CRM system as well as the photo, so everything is in the file from the touch of when we first go out for the first estimate to, let's say, two years down the road when they decide to finally do their roof. I think that's really important, having that resource for the customers.

I get told many, many times that they love to see the final result, the pictures and everything that we have regarding their overall project. Because it's not just a re-roof job, it's their home, and they would like to see the whole progress and everything that's involved. And being able to reach out to somebody and talk to somebody live if they want to or text them because everyone has a busy life these days.

Megan Ellsworth: So true. And that is such a vital aspect of customer service, just being the customer's friend almost, walking them through the process. That's so true. Piggybacking off of that, why should homeowners work with your company?

Jana Zavala: Again, going back to the communication, that is huge, but with our staff. We may not be able to do every job that we look at. Let's say we get called out because they have a roofing repair and ends up being a leak around a chimney. Well, we're not mason's, so we will refer them to somebody who is reputable, that other customers have used in the past. We feel that we want to be a resource to our customers. They do reach out to us and ask us questions and ask for guidance for other contractors. Well, we feel that it's an important part of the whole system when a customer calls us from the beginning to end, that we aren't just able to repair and do roofing, but we are looked at as a resource.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah, that's great. So true. Thank you so much for being an R-Club member, and congratulations on being Roofer of the Month. We love HER Roofing and are really honored to be celebrating you all. So, congratulations.

Jana Zavala: Thank you so much. Thank you for taking the time interviewing me, I really appreciate that. And I love everything that you guys are doing out there. And I'm excited to... Hopefully going to see you at the IRE.
