ARMA recognized outstanding roofing projects that demonstrate the versatility and performance of asphalt systems.

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) is recognizing top-tier craftsmanship across the industry with the 2026 Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards. The awards were presented during the 2026 International Roofing Expo in Las Vegas, highlighting standout low- and steep-slope projects from across North America.

The annual program honors roofing contractors for excellence in design, installation and performance using asphalt roofing systems. According to ARMA, this year’s winners demonstrate the material’s versatility across a range of applications, from historic restoration to complex commercial structures.

Top honors included Gold, Silver and Bronze awards, along with a Best-in-Class recognition. Winning contractors received cash prizes, national exposure and industry recognition for their work.

The Gold Award went to HER Roofing Co. Inc. for its restoration of the historic Settlemier House in Portland, Oregon. The project required balancing preservation with modern performance, including a technically demanding cone roof and custom fabrication work, and utilized Malarkey Roofing Products® Legacy® Shingles with Scotchgard™.

Silver honors were awarded to Wedge Roofing for a complex mid-century church project in California, where asphalt shingles were used to navigate a unique curved roof design. Meanwhile, Priddy Roofing and Exteriors earned Bronze for a highly intricate geodesic dome structure in Pennsylvania, featuring hundreds of unique facets. Both Silver and Bronze projects used Owens Corning® TruDefinition® Duration® Shingles to achieve their end result.

The Best-in-Class Award went to KPost Roofing & Waterproofing for its work on the National Medal of Honor Museum in Arlington, Texas. Using SOPREMA SBS-modified bitumen, KPost completed the complex low-slope roofing project while preserving the architectural intent of the culturally significant building.

“These projects showcase the extraordinary range of what asphalt roofing can achieve,” said ARMA Executive Vice President Reed Hitchcock, emphasizing the material’s reliability and adaptability across diverse project demands.

For contractors, the awards program underscores the importance of technical skill, material selection and attention to detail in delivering high-performing roofing systems.

As U.S. teams competed alongside international peers in Austria, the event became a living example of how respect, workforce development and global standards are shaping roofing’s next generation.

From the competition floor at the Student Competition in Innsbruck, Austria, Heidi J. Ellsworth shared candid conversation with industry professionals from the International Federation of the Roofing Trade (IFD), National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) and a first-time U.S. delegation backed by Durable Slate, KPost Roofing and Waterproofing and Global Roofing Group.

Hosted by the International Federation of the Roofing Trade (IFD), the Student Competition brings young roofers from around the world together to test their skills against shared international standards across multiple roofing disciplines. For the first time, a U.S. delegation supported by NRCA and industry sponsors joined the field, stepping into a highly structured environment designed to measure not only technical ability but professionalism, organization and care for the worksite.

Before anyone picked up a tool, the work was logistical, emotional and human. Flights, buses, schedules, coaches, sponsors and young competitors trying to sleep in a new country before an eight-hour day under judges who measure everything from precision to the way a workspace is kept. Jon spoke about the process, noting the complexity of bringing so many moving parts together. He shared, “At the end of the day I was, as I affectionately say, I was herding cats and they are the best cats in the world and we brought it all together and I breathed a big sigh of relief when everyone was tucked into bed Sunday night.”

What he framed as humor pointed to something more practical. Bringing young roofers into a space like this takes intention, coordination and care, long before competition begins. By the time teams stepped onto the floor, the groundwork for learning, growth and comparison was already in place.

From above, the competition moved steadily, with each task governed by clear rules and time limits. The U.S. teams rotated through low-slope, standing seam metal and slate and tile assemblies, often working with European tools and materials they had not used before. Jon watched the floor as teams worked at different speeds, all measured against the same standard. He shared, “Team USA's greatest skill we have courage and we are inquisitive and we are learning as we go.”

By the second day, conversations around the competition began to shift. Between long hours on the floor and informal discussions off camera, Jon returned to a central reason NRCA chose to engage internationally through IFD: workforce development depends on how the trade is valued. For him, the competition was not just about skills, but about signaling what roofing can offer to the next generation. Jon shared, “Roofing respect; its seed bed is in the home. What do you want your children to be? They say, ‘we want them to be respected. Kids don't grow up to become roofers, they don't grow up saying I want to be a roofer.’ One of the reasons for that is we don’t respect our roofers as we should.”

In Innsbruck, that idea took physical form. The competition showed what respect looks like when it is built into standards, expectations and shared craft, offering young roofers a clearer pathway and contractors a stronger model for attracting and keeping talent.

Watch our interviews to learn more about how NRCA and IFD are using international competition to build workforce pathways and raise roofing respect in the U.S.

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) honored the winners of the 2026 Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards at the International Roofing Expo (IRE), held January 20-22 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The annual awards program recognizes the top low- and steep-slope asphalt roofing projects across North America, celebrating the craftsmanship, durability and aesthetic excellence that asphalt roofing provides.

During the event, ARMA presented large ceremonial checks to this year's Gold, Silver and Bronze Award Winners and an official certificate to the Best-in-Class Award Winner. Each medal-winning company received a monetary prize (Gold – $2,000; Silver – $1,000; Bronze – $500), along with recognition on ARMA’s website and social media platforms, industry authority-boosting materials and national and local trade media exposure.

“These projects showcase the extraordinary range of what asphalt roofing can achieve,” stated Reed Hitchcock, ARMA executive vice president. “Whether addressing historic preservation, complex geometry or large-scale commercial performance demands, this year’s winners demonstrated why asphalt remains a trusted, reliable roofing solution.”

2026 Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards winners

Gold Award winner: HER Roofing Co. Inc. – The Settlemier House (Portland, Oregon)

Project overview: When it came time to restore the roof of the historic 1892 Settlemier House, HER Roofing Co. Inc. delivered a solution that balanced preservation, performance and architectural integrity. The project included a full shake tear-off and re-roof of a steep-slope system, highlighted by a technically demanding cone roof. Asphalt shingles were chosen for their fire resistance, durability and flexibility. Malarkey Legacy® Shingles with Scotchgard™ in Black Oak provided a historically appropriate aesthetic suited to the Pacific Northwest’s climate. The cone required custom vertical plywood installation more than 50 feet in the air, completed safely with an 80-foot lift. Rotted curved wooden gutters were custom fabricated and installed, and the restored copper spire returned to the top.

Silver Award winner: Wedge Roofing – California Mid-Century Gothic (Sebastopol, California)

Project overview: The California Mid-Century Gothic project presented San Francisco Bay Area’s Wedge Roofing with one of Northern California’s most architecturally complex steep-slope projects. The mid-1960s church features a rare hyperbolic paraboloid roof rising from a 6/12 pitch to vertical, making the roof both its most striking feature and its greatest challenge. Asphalt shingles were capable of meeting the building’s geometric and structural demands. Owens Corning® TruDefinition® Duration® Shingles in Brownwood flexed to follow the compound curves while allowing secure fastening on near-vertical surfaces, preserving the sculptural form without overloading the original structure. The project required rebuilding the ridge with Douglas fir decking and structural plywood, integrating solar-powered and fixed Velux skylights, and installing shingles over steep slopes using toe-jacks and fall protection. Two-ply modified bitumen and silicone-coated flat areas completed the system.

Bronze Award winner: Priddy Roofing and Exteriors – The Double Dome (Mercer, Pennsylvania)

Project overview: Homeowners seeking to replace the roof on a highly unconventional residence turned to Priddy Roofing and Exteriors for a project defined by dual interconnected geodesic domes. With 238 unique facets, each with its own pitch, angle and drainage direction, the roof presented a highly complex asphalt roofing installation. Owens Corning® TruDefinition® Duration® Shingles in Williamsburg Gray provided the flexibility to follow the compound curves while maintaining strong fastening and sealant adhesion. Full-coverage ice and water shield created a redundant water-resistant barrier across the constantly changing planes. The team installed the roof one facet at a time, with each course measured, cut, aligned, hand-sealed and hand-nailed. Custom flashings accommodated triangular and irregularly shaped windows, while a perimeter intake and site-built circular ridge vent restored ventilation.

Best-in-Class Award winner, Commercial/Mixed Use Category: KPost Roofing & Waterproofing - National Medal of Honor Museum (Arlington, Texas)

Project overview: The National Medal of Honor Museum in Arlington, Texas, designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects, challenged KPost Roofing & Waterproofing with a complex low-slope roofing project on a building of profound national significance. The roof spans multiple elevations, sloped planes and over 450 structural steel penetrations, requiring precision, durability and aesthetic excellence. SOPREMA SBS-modified bitumen, paired with Alsan RS liquid-applied detailing, provided long-term performance, while lightweight insulating concrete, metal panels and Kingspan insulated panels were integrated to ensure slope-to-drain functionality, continuity and water resistance across all areas.
SOPREMA, Inc. is proud to recognize the selection of the National Medal of Honor Museum in Arlington, Texas, a project featuring SOPREMA roofing materials, as a Best‑in‑Class Award winner in the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) 2026 Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards Program. The project’s roofing contractor, KPost Roofing & Waterproofing, received the honor in the Commercial/Mixed Use Category for their exceptional work on this architecturally significant and nationally meaningful facility.

The National Medal of Honor Museum, designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects, required a roofing solution that delivered long‑term durability while supporting the building’s striking and complex geometry. The project includes multiple elevations, steep and sloped planes, and hundreds of penetrations, requiring close coordination between the architect, general contractor and KPost Roofing & Waterproofing throughout the installation.

To meet the museum’s performance and design requirements, the project team selected a SOPREMA roofing system incorporating ELASTOPHENE® SP 2.2, SOPRALENE® 180 Sanded and COLPLY® EF Adhesive for the primary membrane assembly. For the extensive detailing and complex transitions across multiple roof elevations, ALSAN® RS 230 Field and ALSAN® RS 230 Flash provided a seamless, liquid‑applied solution capable of conforming to the building’s unique geometry. Together, these products delivered the long‑term durability, flexibility and weatherproofing performance needed to protect the structure against the demanding conditions of the Texas climate without compromising the museum’s architectural vision.

“This project reflects excellence not only in construction, but in purpose,” stated Reed Hitchcock, ARMA executive vice president. “KPost Roofing & Waterproofing delivered remarkable work on a building that carries deep national significance.”

“This project is a great example of what’s possible when skilled contractors, thoughtful design and reliable, high-performance materials come together,” said Tim Kersey, CEO of SOPREMA U.S. “KPost Roofing & Waterproofing delivered an exceptionally complex roofing scope with professionalism and precision, and we’re proud that our systems were complemented by their work on such an important landmark.”

Despite the demanding schedule and the museum’s highly complex architecture, KPost Roofing & Waterproofing executed the project with outstanding precision. The resulting roofing systems enhance both the durability and the visual impact of the museum, supporting the long‑term performance of a building designed to honor American service and sacrifice.

From testing regulations to tariffs and workforce gaps, learn about the major challenges facing our industry and how we can rise to meet them.

While at the 2026 World of Concrete show, Heidi J. Ellsworth of CoatingsCoffeeShop® had the opportunity to host a special Coffee Conversations®! This session featured a panel of professionals including Ray Rizzi of Tremco, Joe Harnois of Atlantic Builders Supply Northeast, Steve Little of KPost Roofing and Waterproofing, Jeff Walls of Innovative Chemical Products and Kevin Cummings of Polycoat Products. With backgrounds spanning across the coatings world, this incredible panel was perfect for the job of sharing their insights into the current challenges facing the industry.

Testing

Kevin opened the conversation by highlighting the need for more comprehensive and ubiquitous testing. As products continue to change and advance, so must the skills of the individuals using them in real-world applications. He explained, “One issue that I see is getting back to some sort of coordination on testing so that, as a group, we can all agree on what testing is important in relation to how systems actually perform on buildings.” Jeff echoed that point, adding, “We have similar challenges in manufacturing...It is really key this year that we find that balance of optimized quality of product and optimized quality of work...Testing is huge part of that.”

Tariffs

In addition to the challenges of updating testing standards, Jeff noted how the constantly changing tariffs and the resulting unstable market are a continuing challenge for coatings professionals:

Across the industry, we're certainly challenged by the inconsistency of tariffs...But I think a key to overcoming this is communication...As a manufacturer, I need to be able to go to my distributors and say, ‘Hey, you know what? It's going to be a small price increase for a little while.’ Then I have to be honest enough that when we're not in the face of that, we bring it back down. And that way, when he passes on to a contractor, if we all work together, we can weather it together.

Workforce

Another challenge that’s no stranger to the conversation was the aging workforce, a concern that has continuously grown in relevancy over the years. Steve shared, “People that are really subject matter experts who grew up in this industry are aging out and we're starting to lose some really credible resources.”

This is something that Joe has seen as well. He noted, “In the Northeast, in the concrete industry, the average age is 63 years old and one of the biggest issues is that those professional don’t have a succession plan...Going back to how this is all a partnership, we can do our best to come out with the best products and all this jazz, but if a great amount of our workforce just ages out, we’re all in trouble.”

Timelines

The other challenge that was brought up was related to timelines and work cycles. Ray explained, “In the Northeast, we have winter from November to basically March. It means our work cycle is small. That’s why it’s so important that we, as a manufacturer, develop innovative products to make the lives of our contractors easier and to also maintain the quality of the installation.” Kevin shared a similar sentiment, explaining, “That’s part of why we developed our two-component, fast-cure coating systems – to extend the time that the installers can install.”

Conclusion

Overall, 2026 will present some tough challenges for all professionals in the world of coatings. But this is a tough industry, full of professionals who are ready to rise to the challenge. Invest in your people and foster partnerships within the industry. Steve added, “Invest in your employees. The difference between all the products that are available and all the ways to get the products to it are the people that are installing them and doing the work.”

As Ray noted, “Everything in the industry is a partnership, all three ways, from the manufacturer, to the contractor, to the distributor. All of us are all in the same game, we're all going to play and figure out a solution out together.”

ARMA honors exceptional craftsmanship, innovation and performance in asphalt roofing across North America.

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) has announced the winners of its 2026 Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards, recognizing outstanding asphalt roofing projects across North America. ARMA is the national trade association representing manufacturers of asphalt roofing products and their raw material suppliers. The association advances the asphalt roofing industry through research, technical guidance, sustainability initiatives, advocacy and education, while promoting best practices in design, installation and long-term performance. Through programs like the Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards, ARMA highlights the durability, versatility and innovation of asphalt roofing systems.

The annual awards program honors exceptional craftsmanship, technical expertise and creative problem-solving in both steep-slope and low-slope asphalt roofing applications. Entries are judged on why asphalt was selected for the project, how installation challenges were addressed, what makes the project unique and overall aesthetic impact. Top-scoring projects receive Gold, Silver or Bronze awards, along with Best-in-Class honors recognizing excellence in specialty categories.

Gold Award: HER Roofing Co. Inc.

The Gold Award was presented to HER Roofing Co. Inc. for its restoration of the historic Settlemier House, originally built in 1892. The project involved a complete steep-slope tear-off and re-roof using high-performance asphalt shingles designed to withstand the Pacific Northwest’s variable climate. The complex cone roof and structural challenges required exceptional craftsmanship, while custom-fabricated curved wooden gutters preserved the home’s historic character and enhanced long-term performance.

Silver Award: Wedge Roofing

Wedge Roofing earned the Silver Award for its work on a mid-century Gothic church in the San Francisco Bay Area. The roof’s dramatic hyperbolic paraboloid shape required asphalt shingles to flex and conform to sweeping curves without compromising durability. Structural deck repairs and skylight integration further demonstrated the adaptability of asphalt roofing systems in architecturally complex projects.

Bronze Award: Priddy Roofing and Exteriors

The Bronze Award went to Priddy Roofing and Exteriors for a one-of-a-kind residential project featuring two interconnected geodesic domes. With 238 individual roof facets, the installation demanded meticulous planning, custom shingle cutting and precise hand nailing on constantly changing planes. Custom ventilation solutions were incorporated to support long-term roof performance.

Best-in-Class Commercial/Mixed Use: KPost Roofing & Waterproofing

Best-in-Class honors in the Commercial/Mixed Use category were awarded to KPost Roofing & Waterproofing for its work on the National Medal of Honor Museum in Arlington, Texas. The project required a sophisticated low-slope asphalt roofing system capable of integrating with complex architectural features, numerous penetrations and varied elevations. Detailed installation of SBS-modified bitumen ensured the roof met demanding performance and design requirements.

Industry-expert judges

This year’s award submissions were evaluated by a distinguished panel of industry experts representing technical, editorial and consulting perspectives within the roofing industry. Judges included Aaron R. Phillips, Brian Terry, Glenn Clapper, Art Aisner and RoofersCoffeeShop president, Heidi J. Ellsworth. Their combined experience ensured each project was evaluated for technical execution, material performance, constructability and overall impact, reinforcing the credibility of the awards program.

The 2026 Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards continue ARMA’s tradition of celebrating excellence while showcasing the innovation and skill of roofing professionals. These winning projects demonstrate how asphalt roofing solutions deliver performance, beauty and reliability across a wide range of building types and design challenges.
