The Drift Solar Snow Fence provides essential safety for residential solar projects.

The United States is experiencing an unprecedented boom in residential solar projects, with homeowners across the nation turning to solar energy to power their lives. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, a new solar project was installed every 59 seconds in 2025, bringing the total number of solar energy systems in the U.S. to nearly 6 million — Enough to power 47 million households. By 2030, it’s projected that 11% of American homes will feature solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on their roofs.

As the number of solar installations continues to climb, it is critical for architects, specifiers, contractors and roofing professionals to proactively plan for the unique challenges these systems present — Particularly in regions prone to winter weather. One significant concern is the rapid warming of solar panels after a snowfall, which causes snow to slide quickly down roof surfaces. Without proper snow retention, this can result in avalanches of snow and ice, putting people, property and landscaping below at risk.

Solar snowfall solution

To address this issue, Rocky Mountain Snow Guards offers the Drift Solar Aluminum 4-pipe fence-style snow guard system. Specifically engineered for installation below solar panels, this innovative system features a 12-inch-tall snow fence that acts as a catch basin, holding snow in place until it melts gradually. This prevents dangerous, sudden releases of snow, safeguarding both residents and property.

The Drift Solar Snow Fence is compatible with both new construction and retrofit roof applications. Its robust design calls for the brackets to be bolted directly to the roof support structure flush at the eave, with the tubing side facing downslope — A reversed installation compared to traditional snow fence systems. Each bracket is anchored with five structural lag bolts, ensuring long-lasting performance and reliability. Individually sold ice screens must be installed with the Drift Solar snow fence system to impede the movement of snow between the tubing.

            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

Nine essential safety tips for roofers installing snow retention systems.

March marks National Snow Guard Safety Month, an initiative established by Rocky Mountain Snow Guards, a leader in the snow retention industry. This month is dedicated to raising awareness about roof safety and best practices for professionals.

For roofers and contractors, installing snow retention systems requires skill, attention and a commitment to safety. Whether you’re working on residential or commercial buildings, following smart safety practices helps protect both you and your team, ensuring every project is completed successfully and without injury.

Tip 1: Wear the right gear

Start with the basics. Always wear a hard hat to protect yourself against accidental bumps and falls. Non-slip boots give you stability on slick, icy or wet surfaces and gloves keep your hands safe from sharp edges and cold temperatures. The right gear is your first defense against accidents.

Tip 2: Be cautious and aware of your surroundings

Slow down and check your work area before moving. Look for slippery spots, loose shingles and any obstacles that could cause a trip or fall when installing a snow retention system. Staying alert helps you avoid hazards and stay safe on the roof.

Tip 3: Watch out for co-workers and communicate clearly

Roofing is a team effort. Always know where your co-workers are and keep lines of communication open. Shout out warnings if you spot a hazard, and listen for instructions from others. Looking out for each other reduces risks and builds a safer work environment.

Tip 4: Avoid using earbuds that block instructions

As a follow-up to communicating clearly, listening to music can be tempting while working, but earbuds may block critical instructions or warnings from co-workers. Stay alert by keeping your ears open for communication, especially when working in teams or around heavy equipment.

Tip 5: Read directions thoroughly before starting

Before you begin installing snow retention systems, take time to read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. Understanding the process and any special requirements ensures you use the right techniques and materials, which should avoid mistakes that could put you or others at risk.

Tip 6: Use appropriate tools for snow retention installation

Using the right tools makes the job easier and safer. Check that your tools are in good condition and designed for working on roofs and at low temperatures. Damaged or makeshift tools increase the chance of injury and can compromise the quality of the installation.

Tip 7: Use protective eye gear

Flying debris, dust and sharp objects are common hazards when installing snow retention systems. Always wear protective eye gear to prevent injuries that could sideline you from work.

Tip 8: Protect skin from sun exposure

Roofs offer little shade and sun can be strong at any time of the year. Wear UV-protective clothing and apply sunblock to exposed skin. These simple steps help prevent sunburn and long-term skin damage, keeping you healthy.

Tip 9: Manage your lifting

Heavy lifting on a steep roof is risky. Only carry loads you are comfortable with, and ask for help if needed. Overexertion can lead to off-balance falls or muscle injuries, so protect yourself by respecting your limits.

Safety leads to success

By following these practical tips, professional roofers and contractors can work confidently and safely when installing snow retention systems. Prioritizing safety not only helps prevent injuries but also ensures every job is completed smoothly and efficiently. Celebrate National Snow Guard Safety Month by making safety your top priority each and every day on the roof.

            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

By DaVinci Roofscapes.

How to protect roofs — and homeowners — when winter weather hits.

Soft, white and beautiful — A fresh snowfall transforms any landscape into a winter wonderland. But for roofers, snow brings significant challenges. Beneath that picturesque layer, every flake adds more weight to a roof and if you’re not prepared, the consequences can be severe. Have you ever paused to consider just how heavy snow and ice really are? More importantly, how much weight can the roofs you work on actually support?

We’ve all seen dramatic images of people shoveling mountains of snow off roofs during blizzards. But here’s something many homeowners and even some contractors might not realize: just one to two feet of heavy, wet snow blanketing a roof can weigh several tons. If that weight isn’t properly managed, it can mean major trouble for the structure.

March is National Snow Guard Safety month

March brings more than just the promise of spring — it’s also National Snow Guard Safety Month, sponsored by Rocky Mountain Snow Guards. This dedicated month is the perfect opportunity for roofing professionals to refocus on roof safety, especially when it comes to snow retention. It’s a critical reminder to revisit the best practices for ensuring snow and ice remain where they belong, particularly on composite shake and slate roofs, which can be more prone to dangerous snow slides.

Understanding roof load capacity

Every well-engineered roof starts with a careful design process. Architects and structural engineers factor in the anticipated weight of snow and ice, ensuring the roof will pass local building codes. These codes are reviewed and enforced by community building officials, aiming to keep everyone safe throughout the winter.

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) sets the national standards for these calculations. Their ASCE/SEI 7 Standard, “Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures,” defines how to determine design loads — including snow, ice and much more — for all types of buildings. Updated every six years, this standard is the foundation for safe, code-compliant roofs.

When designing for cold climates, roofing professionals consult the “Snow Loads: Guide to the Snow Load Provisions of ASCE 7.” This guide offers clear, authoritative details on how much weight a roof should hold, depending on its location, slope and materials.

How much weight can a roof really hold?

So, what’s the magic number? For a properly engineered, up-to-code home, the roof should be able to support the full ground snow load designated for its region, measured in pounds per square foot (psf). For example, consider a new roof measuring 20 feet at the eave with 20-foot rafters and a 10:12 pitch, in an area with a ground snow load of 30 psf. That roof could be designed to bear as much as 12,000 pounds (6 tons) of snow and ice — plus the weight of its roofing materials. That’s a massive burden!

Material matters: Why roofing type is important

Not all roofs handle snow and ice the same way. “Frictionless” or smooth-surfaced roofs, such as those made from composite slate or shake, pose special concerns. While these tough, nonporous materials — like the products from DaVinci Roofscapes — resist water absorption and are highly durable, they also make it harder for snow and ice to “grip” the surface. Unlike asphalt shingles with textured granules, composite roofs can let snow and ice slide off in one dramatic avalanche.

Here’s why: as snow and ice melt, water seeps to the bottom of the snow layer, essentially lubricating the roof. When the conditions are right, that entire mass can slide off at once — no shoveling required. The danger isn’t about the roof’s structural support, but what happens below when several tons of snow and ice come crashing down.

Composite roofs need snow retention systems

Here’s the bottom line. When it comes to composite roofing, the main danger isn’t the roof collapsing under the weight of ice and snow — it’s what happens when that accumulated snow and ice lets loose and avalanches off in sheets. Such slides can cause serious harm to people, pets, landscaping or property below.

To avoid this risk, every composite roof should be equipped with a snow retention system. Whether you’re installing a new roof or retrofitting an existing one, adding these systems is essential for safety. Snow retention can be seamlessly integrated during roof installation, but effective solutions are also available for roofs that have already been built.

The dangers of snow avalanches — And how to prevent them

Imagine a roof that’s 20 feet from the eave to the ground. In the right conditions, a snow avalanche could hurl ice and snow up to 15 feet from the house. That’s enough to seriously injure people and pets, or destroy landscaping and property below the eaves.

To mitigate these risks, snow retention systems are a must for composite and other smooth-surfaced roofs in snowy climates. There are two main types:

Pad-style snow guards: These break up sliding snow and ice, ensuring it comes off in smaller, less dangerous pieces.

Pipe-style snow guards: These act as a barricade, holding back snow and ice so it melts slowly, dropping down as small chunks or simply as water.

Using the right snow retention system protects both people and property from the unpredictable dangers of falling snow.

Choosing the right snow retention system

Designing an effective snow retention system starts with understanding the local ground snow load. The manufacturer must ensure that their system can withstand the force of snow and ice pushing against it.

Brian Stearns, president and founder of Alpine SnowGuards, emphasizes, “The first step is to estimate the mass or volume of snow and ice that you’re attempting to manage.” The most reliable way? Reference the local building design ground snow load — the same data used by architects and engineers when designing the roof in the first place.

Key takeaways for roofing professionals

Always know the ground snow load for the area before starting a roofing project.

Understand how the roof’s material will affect snow and ice behavior — and advise homeowners accordingly.

In snowy climates, always recommend and install appropriate snow retention systems to prevent dangerous avalanches.

Partner with reputable manufacturers who design snow guards based on local loads and code requirements.

Take advantage of National Snow Guard Safety Month in March to review roof safety practices, with special attention to composite shake and slate roofs.

Winter brings opportunities and challenges for roofing professionals. By staying informed and proactive, you can help homeowners enjoy the beauty of the season without risking their safety — or their investment.

            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

The importance of snow guards for property owners living in areas with accumulating snowfall and the safety value of snow retention products are the primary goals of the monthlong educational program.

For the second year, Rocky Mountain Snow Guards, Inc., a leader in the snow retention industry, is hosting National Snow Guards Safety Month during the month of March. The focus on the importance of snow guards for property owners living in areas with accumulating snowfall and the safety value of snow retention products are the primary goals of the monthlong educational program.

“A properly installed and well-maintained snow guard system on a home can help save lives and prevent property damage,” according to Brian Cross, operations manager at Rocky Mountain Snow Guards out of Englewood, Colorado. “Accumulating snow on roofs can come sliding off in one mass sheet. This is dangerous for people, pets and landscaping below.”

Check and double-check

Cross recommends that roofers suggest to their customer to make it a priority to have their snow guard or snow retention system checked each year as soon as snows have melted off the roof.

“If your area has seen snow activity during the past winter months, then contact your homeowners and recommend a complete inspection of their roofs, including their snow retention system,” says Cross. “You want to make certain that accumulating snowfalls have not moved or damaged any of their snow guards. Additionally, while on the roof, you can inspect the roofing and make sure that everything is solidly in place to perform at its peak during the coming year.”

Safe snow retention systems

The experts at Rocky Mountain Snow Guards manufacture snow guards and create plans for where they should be placed on a roof for maximum benefit. They take into consideration the areas with the most potential exposure where people least wish to see snow drop off in large masses, such as door entryways, driveways, walkways and decks. And they use scientific configurations related to the roof slope, roof snow load and other factors. Even the type of materials on the roof (such as asphalt, composite, metal or slate roofing) factor into the calculations.

“We work directly with roofing contractors, builders and homeowners to create a roof specific layout resulting in safe snow retention,” says Cross. “The free layout and quote service we provide takes individual roof specifications and returns the ideal layout for a snow retention system. The result is a configuration of specific products that allow the snow to melt slowly off the roof rather than being released in large, dangerous chunks.”

In a joint statement from the National Avalanche Center and the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) in support of National Snow Guards Safety Month, Theresa Blake Graven, public information officer said, “Roof avalanches pose a serious risk every year in mountain communities. It’s critical to stay aware of snow-loaded roofs, minimize time spent beneath them and keep a shovel nearby in case of an emergency.”

The CAIC reports that 1,095 avalanches have been recorded in Colorado so far this season. Over the past 30 years, five people have died in roof avalanches in Colorado, with many more injuries and close calls documented. The most recent fatal roof avalanche in Colorado occurred on March 16, 2023, when a father and two children were buried. Tragically, one child died.

CAIC advises people to watch for thick snow buildup on roofs, avoid spending time directly beneath roof edges and keep entryways clear.

The cost of saying no to snow guards

Snow guards are all about being proactive in keeping people and property safe from falling snow and ice. In addition, the snow guards can help reduce ice dams and gutter damage during severe winter weather.

Roofers can remind homeowners that not having a well-installed snow guard system can lead to catastrophic damage, potential injuries, liability claims and insurance problems. Being proactive and having snow guards can keep homeowners from paying avalanche-related insurance claims, repairing damaged roofing and constantly worrying during the winter season. Homeowners and businesses can gain peace of mind along with knowing their property is protected by installing and maintaining a snow guard system.

Rocky Mountain Snow Guards, a leader in the snow retention industry, has introduced the CrossGard II Snow Fence. The two-pipe fence-style snow retention system can be used on all shingle-type roofs for retrofit situations.

An economical system, CrossGard II Snow Fence comes in an aluminum mill finish that can also be requested in a powder coated finish. The system is very compact and only requires three screws per upright bracket. It can be attached onto the sheeting and is ideal for lower pitches and snow loads.

“The CrossGard II Snow Fence fits on the face of a single course of shingles,” says Brian Cross, operations manager of Rocky Mountain Snow Guards. “It was designed as a lower-cost retrofit-only snow fence option. The key selling feature of this product, which has the same load ratings as our snow guards, is its low profile.

“This is the easiest snow fence in our product line up to install. It’s a very condensed system that shines in effectiveness on retrofit applications for any type of pre-installed shingle roofs.”

Learn why Rocky Mountain Snow Guards was this roofer's first call when he got a huge townhome re-roofing project.

When roofer Scott Kim made a deal to re-roof six townhomes on the same street in Reston, Virginia he knew he’d need snow guards. A LOT of snow guards. The owner of WGM Contracting out of Fairfax, Virginia didn’t hesitate. He contacted Rocky Mountain Snow Guards to place his order for RG16 snow guards in a Dark Bronze color.

“We were replacing deteriorated real shakes on six different townhomes with DaVinci Select Shake,” says Scott. He went on, “Composite roofing products need snow retention assistance. And we’ve successfully installed RG-16s before on DaVinci products. It’s definitely one of our ‘go to’ products.”

Made specifically for installation with synthetic and natural slate and shake roofs, the 16-inch long metal snow guards require a minimum of three ring-shank nails per unit during installation.

“The townhouses on Chapel Cross Way are close together on this street,” says Scott. “It’s really smart that we’ve installed the snow guards to help prevent against avalanching of snow on key entrance and walkway areas. These durable RG16 snow guards will definitely be an asset when winter weather comes to town.”

Learn how Rocky Mountain Snow Guards is going beyond the rooftop to protect and support their community.

Since their founding in 2010, Rocky Mountain Snow Guards (RMSG) has been dedicated to designing and distributing rooftop snow guard, fence and bar systems across the U.S. and Canada. Snow retention systems not only protect roofs and properties from the damage of avalanching snow; they can also save the lives of the people on the property premises.

This dedication to protecting people weaves through everything that RMSG does, including the company’s charitable partnership with Freedom Service Dogs of America (FSDA). To learn more about their collaboration, we hosted Lars Walberg, president and owner of RMSG, and Chris Nelson, CEO of FSDA, for an episode of Roofing Road Trips®.

FSDA was founded nearly four decades ago by PJ and Michael O’Rourke. Chris shared, “PJ and Michael trained their dog Oreo out of their home to help Michael, a wheelchair user, live an independent and fulfilling life.”

Today, FSDA is a little more professional, running a training facility in Englewood, Colorado, and averaging a placement of 60 dogs each year. But they continue to carry the legacy of PJ, Michael and Oreo forward. Chris shared, “We breed the dogs and train the dogs to serve people with disabilities, veterans, first responders with PTSD, folks with mobility challenges and more. We also have an autism assist program for younger people.”

Lars and his wife led the initiative of RMSG partnering with FSDA. Lars explained, “My wife and I have given to Freedom Service Dogs annually for probably eight or nine years. It’s such a great program; we like dogs, and we are drawn to the mission. So, it was a natural fit.” A couple years ago, Lars was talking to the leadership team at RMSG about how they could extend the support and protection their products provide to people through philanthropic missions, and he immediately thought of FSDA.

The leadership team was on board, and before they knew it, RMSG was sponsoring the raising and training of a puppy named Snow! Chris shared a short update on Snow’s progress, adding, “The puppy is 14 months old now and is coming to our site for training soon. From there, our on-site professional dog instructors will begin official training. The next step after that is for Snow to be matched with a client!”
