Learn about the unique role the roofing industry can play in creating entrepreneurial hubs and educational spaces for underserved areas.

Kyle Nurminen wears many hats. From Navy veteran to entrepreneur, he founded Dynamic Metals which has a patented retrofit metal roof system that he now uses in their sister company, Total Roofing Systems – The Metal Roof Experts. In Season 5, Episode 64 of Roofing Road Trips®, he joined Heidi J. Ellsworth for a discussion around another passion of his – bringing opportunities to the inner city. Discussing his own ideas for inner city vitalization, he hopes to inspire the roofing industry into action.

Having entered the industry as a problem-solver around the time back-to-back hurricanes were hitting Florida in the early 2000s, Kyle has never stopped looking for solutions to concerns he sees across the industry. During a recent expo, the conversation focused on how the roofing industry fuels the future generations of our businesses. He discovered maker spaces around the Tampa Bay area and started mapping those areas as resources for employers and technical schools to tap into. From entrepreneurial spaces to business development and engineering design, he shared, “We’re realizing these kids are working with their hands, and they’re learning technical skills and they’re learning business skills, and they’re learning how to market and run a business model. And it has nowhere to go because they have nowhere to have a collaborative manufacturing, to set up an assembly line.”

He equates it to someone presenting an idea on Shark Tank and having the judges respond, “Well, you got a good idea, but you’re asking me to do everything?” This is where the roofing industry plays a unique role. Kyle continued, “There's available neglected space all throughout our urban areas. The roofing industry is so entrenched into those investors and those building owners and revitalizing those buildings and on the roof side system and all that. They have contacts. We have the network. They just haven't had much success getting through government to get these buildings donated.”

Wanting to fill this gap, Kyle started SeedRegion1.com to help create collaborative manufacturing facilities and create education and existing business for skilled laborers who may not have had the opportunity otherwise. Essentially by creating these maker spaces in their own backyards, he wanted to encourage existing companies to further invest in the area.

While the website is no longer available, Kyle has not stopped in his passion to make this project successful.

The roofing industry and technical schools are great opportunities for kids in underserved areas, but there are steps that need to be taken to give them a chance.

In Episode 64 of Season 5 of Roofing Road Trips®, host Heidi J. Ellsworth talks to Kyle Nurminen about his entrepreneurial and philanthropic hopes for the inner city using SeedRegion1.com as a platform. Kyle grew up in Youngstown, Ohio, which is a very urban area. He is also a Navy veteran and has experience working in the prison-system, both of which instilled in him the belief that “a young adult or a child in an urban area has no less capability than the one in the better off suburbs, they just lack the opportunity.”

Now that he’s working with Total Roofing Systems, Kyle is joining his history and beliefs with his work. He attended a construction summit between technical schools and employers in the industry that then led to Kyle “discovering makerspaces and actually mapping those resources as a resource for employers and technical schools to tap into the intellectual property in our most deprived neighborhoods.” This is where Kyle discovered what he believes to be the source of the problem. He shared, “Kids in these urban areas going through engineering programs and learning all this stuff have nowhere to set that up. They don't have that home. They don't have that means to outsource their labor.” This limits the next generation of entrepreneurs in the industry.

SeedRegion1.com, Kyle’s platform, was originally designed to bring together talent in underserved areas to attract existing companies to invest in the area. However, he had a realization, sharing, “The actual odds of someone from our immediate community making it to the top are very slim. It may turn out well for a few, but not enough to make an overall impact on our immediate economy.” Kyle shifted his goals with this realization, instead focusing on investing money into revitalizing existing infrastructure into collaborative makerspaces – the spaces those kids in urban areas that have technical skills need to set up in.

Don’t miss this podcast episode to find out why RoofersCoffeeShop® named Total Roofing Systems our latest Roofer of the Month.

Based out of Stuart, Florida, Total Roofing Systems – The Metal Roof Experts are all about customer service. R-club's Roofer of the Month for January, Megan Ellsworth sits down with Kyle Nurminen in this podcast episode to discuss some of their most recent accomplishments and why they love the roofing industry.

Total Roofing Systems added The Metal Roof Experts to their name in 2018, but because of the Florida market, they equally specialize in tile. But Kyle says, “Our specialty really, is custom solutions. Because we’re well versed and well skilled in all aspects of roofing... We’re not limited to just what we do. We don’t just say, ‘Oh, it has to be this,’ because that’s all we know how to do. We can look at a project from every angle, break it out, and really make the best decision for [the homeowner].” They’ve recently been getting into more communities and finding what works best in each area. As Kyle mentions, it’s not about getting the proposal out the door to win the bid. They want to take the time surveying each project to provide consulting for every customer, no matter what the roof system is.

Being able to offer an overall solution requires an understanding of the customer’s needs, and Kyle feels his company excels in customer service. When asked how he defines superior customer service, he admits, “I think that’s a tougher question than most people readily rattle off. I think the key aspect of customer service is to always make it right. Something’s always going to pop up. But it’s being upfront, having integrity and not necessarily about doing everything, but just making everything right.”

At Total Roofing Systems, they really are all about a total solution. Kyle finishes, saying, “I want to know every single thing about your building, everything about your life significant to that building. There are so many factors that come into your roof. If you’re that type of person, and it really means that to you – if your home is really where you hang your hat, where you’re raising your kids and what you’re passing that on to your family – come to us. We’re going to look at it that way too.”

Megan Ellsworth: Hello everyone. My name is Megan Ellsworth here at rooferscoffeeshop.com, and I am back again for our Roofer of the Month. And this one's really special because it's January 2024, first month of the year and we're congratulating The Metal Roof Experts. And I have Kyle Nurminen here. Hi Kyle.

Kyle Nurminen: Hey Megan. Thanks for having me.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah, we are so proud to give you the honor of our first Roofer of the Month of 2024, so congrats.

Kyle Nurminen: Thank you. Thank you. I look at it [inaudible 00:00:33] a different perspective. I think it's more like Roofer of the Year, '24, '23 though. It's kicking off the new year. We had a lot going on last year, didn't we?

Megan Ellsworth: We did. You've been on so many podcasts.

Kyle Nurminen: Yeah. So I appreciate you. Thank you very much.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah, of course. So let's dive right in and have you just introduce yourself and tell us a little bit more about The Metal Roof Experts.

Kyle Nurminen: Well, Total Roofing Systems took on the name... We added "Metal Roof Experts" to our name officially in 2018, but it started like 25 years ago. Richard McEwen had originally founded Total Roofing. His father who had a roofing company, had retired his. So Richard started his own, specialized in commercial, government, schools. A lot of schools in the Treasure Coast area of Florida still have FiberTite roofs on them from the days of Richard McEwen. 30, 40 year roofs. It's crazy.

Megan Ellsworth: Wow.

Kyle Nurminen: And then he was getting into metal roof applications way back, and Jesus Lara, our now CEO of both Total Roofing and Dynamic Metals actually came to Richard McEwen as an installer, a crew leader. And he had an amazing resource with family and friends and in the industry and a lot of knowledge as far as getting labor, getting good crews. Actually Richard played a big part in making sure that he was doing it correctly. He wanted it done a certain way, and so he mentored Jesus into correct details. Richard has a knack for being able to design any type of a metal detail for any situation.

So Jesus came up under that and basically after Dynamic Metal started taking off, he needed a resource for installing metal roofs as well. And he bought Total Roofing from Richard McEwen. So the amazing thing is, back in the last year, we just brought Richard McEwen right back out of retirement. He's with us now as they're headed... Yeah, he's with us now. He brought FiberTite back to us as well because the years of Jesus was primarily high-end residential, new construction, anything metal.

But because the market down here is so extensive in tile, we are just as good at tile. We've done some major, major projects in tile in the area, in the West Palm Beach area. Well-known projects. So tile and metal are our areas of expertise. And now we are even getting, because of the commercial aspect and our ability to handle large projects so efficiently... That's actually Jesus's passion. It's just production. He's just likes the streamline processes. And now we do it on a grander level. So we're doing entire communities. We're doing hybrid retrofits and hybrid roof solutions all across the state of Michigan. Grew up in Ohio, Michigan. Orlando. That was only 20 years ago. I'm losing it. I'm losing it, Megan.

Megan Ellsworth: I was going to say, I thought you guys were based in Florida.

Kyle Nurminen: I'm losing it. I'm losing it.

Megan Ellsworth: It's almost the holidays. Then we have a couple days off.

Kyle Nurminen: Yeah, pretty close. I need a break. Absolutely.

Megan Ellsworth: So, you talked about you do lot tile, you do metal. Would you say that y'all have a specialty?

Kyle Nurminen: Our specialty really, I got to tell you, it's custom solutions. Because we're well-versed and well-skilled in all aspects of roofing, we really... Now, I'll be honest, we're not really a service orientated company. We don't have a big service division. We have two service crews that maintain our customers, our warranties and they're really good. And so on occasion, I get a customer that's not really a customer come at me for a leak, and it's always impressive. We're on it. Most service companies are so drawn out when they're doing their services. We're able to get on it, make an exception for that customer, do a really good job no matter what the roof system is.

And tying metal roofs and tile roofs into flat roofs and the compatibility of those materials and the overall roof design of the big picture is really what we're getting good at. That's why we're starting to do more communities, because communities are built in a certain way and some roofs have been done by some owners before and now they're trying to do one all-inclusive solution. And we're the best at trying to figure out... We're not limited to just what we do. We don't just say, "Oh, it has to be this," because that's all we know how to do, which is what a lot of these communities get. One-sided points of views. We can go look at it on every single angle, break it out to them, talk about all the advantages and disadvantages, and really make the best decision that's the best decision for them.

Megan Ellsworth: That's great. Yeah. What a specialty that is.

Kyle Nurminen: It is. It is. It takes a long process. It takes a lot of... It's not just, "Okay, what do you want?" Email you a proposal and then win a bid. It's nothing like that. We really get into the surveying and the analysis and the consulting.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah, absolutely. So going off of that, more into the culture of Metal Roof Experts, what's something that you all celebrate? And that can be actual birthdays or it can be holidays or customer service. What do you celebrate over there?

Kyle Nurminen: We really celebrate our crews. We celebrate our guys. We had a whole separate Christmas party just for our crews this year, aside from the office, and any subcontractors that we work with closely. I mean, our CEO, Jesus, we spend a lot of time celebrating him. It's crazy. And near and dear to him are the ground level guys. So it goes hand in hand. We celebrate the high end and the low end, consistently. Everybody in between is just part of it, part of the journey. And it's really exciting, and really see Jesus be so hands-on. Whether they're welding FiberTite or doing some training, he's out there right next to the guys. He's out there learning how to do it himself. I mean, he's welded plenty in his career, but he needs to get used to the FiberTite. Right there next to his guys. He's out there hacking up meat for the Christmas party with a Sawzall. With the guy that's-

Megan Ellsworth: That's amazing.

Kyle Nurminen: ...stirring the pot. Doing it hardcore, that style. It's a really great family. He's not into titles. We're not a real title orientated company. Everybody really just plays on their strengths. So our sales team is very diverse. Our internal crew is very diverse and it's really just a matter of who's best at doing this, and let's let that person do that, let them spread their wings and just do what they're happy doing.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah, absolutely. That's great. And that's what makes people stay and that's what builds the family and community culture of a company is celebrating everyone being together and cutting up meat with a Sawzall and celebrating the top down.

Kyle Nurminen: My son just turned 11 and he wasn't raised with a very diverse palette, but we come to a couple of company events, and street tacos, real Mexican street tacos, he's like, "Yeah, give me more of those, Dad. That's awesome."

Megan Ellsworth: I love it. Me too. Now I know what I'm having for lunch. So how would you define superior customer service?

Kyle Nurminen: You know what? I think that's a tougher question than most people readily rattle off. A lot of what people emphasize for customer service is just a coin phrase or something like that. I think the key aspect of customer service is to always make it right.

Roofing, especially in southeast Florida with the weather and the [inaudible 00:08:48] and the climate, it's always going to be something. Something's going to pop up. And then people wait and wait and wait, and then when they get contracted, they want it done yesterday. And you always ship priorities around weather and on people's priorities and requests and things are going to go wrong.

And you can do acres and acres of a single ply product. I always tell people straight up, "Hey, we just did a single ply. We just fixed a leak." I told them at the board meeting and I told them that it's a single ply and we're doing thousands of lineal feet of heat welding. If a roofer's telling you it's not going to leak after that, there are so many... You could miss one little seam, just to get [inaudible 00:09:26], it's going to be a leak. Good thing it... Whatever.

But it's being upfront, having integrity and not necessarily about doing everything, but just making everything right.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah, really caring deeply about your customers and the people that you work with. Well said.

Kyle Nurminen: Thank you.

Megan Ellsworth: So, building off of that, your expertise, customer service, why should home or building owners work with your company?

Kyle Nurminen: Why should building owners and owners... Like I said, I don't want to sound arrogant. We're not your cheapest roofing company. We don't do things like everybody else, but if you're really into a longer decision making process to make sure that you make the best decision that's right for you and your overall situation, not what's best for me as a contractor, what makes me the most amount of money... I want to know every single thing about your building, everything about your life significant to that building. There's so many factors that come into your roof. And if you're that type of person, and it really means that to you, if your home is really where you hang your hat, where you're raising your kids and when you're gone, you're passing that on to your family, I mean, come to us. We're going to look at it that way, whether it's your commercial asset investment or whether it's your own private home.

Megan Ellsworth: That's great. All right, homeowners and building owners out there, you know who to go to if you're in Southeast Florida. So I just have two questions left for you. And one of them is why are you an R-Club member and what's your favorite thing about Roofers Coffee Shop?

Kyle Nurminen: Well, my favorite thing about the Roofers Coffee Shop is the multitude of platforms that are exposure you give your club members. Roofers Coffee Shop is educating not just the contractor, but everybody in the market. Anything that has to do with roofing in any way. So whether you're a homeowner or whether you're a teenager trying to figure out what you want to do for a career in skilled trades, college, or anything like that, or what have you, you're in an HOA or in the community... I mean, you give us the voice that give them the platform to learn from. So that's why I'm a member. So I'm running these two questions together.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah, that's great.

Kyle Nurminen: Just as a Christian, I'm always involved in discipleship to take care of myself and fuel my soul and constantly improve. If you are really a career expert in this industry, you need to continue feeding yourself as well. So Roofers Coffee Shop gives us that platform and that voice that we would've never [inaudible 00:12:19] had.

Megan Ellsworth: Oh, thank you. I'm so glad. That's amazing. So glad to hear that. And I know our club coordinator, Alex, will love to hear this too. And she loves working with all of the R-Club members and all of you great contractors out there that are doing really amazing work, keeping people dry and safe and protecting people's homes and assets.

Kyle Nurminen: And you connect it all in a way that we learned from each other. I can learn from a guy up in Montana just as much as he can learn from me down here. And also, when we're really professionals in what we do and we're in this network, we're R-Club members. I mean, there are people in Montana that have investors that have properties in Florida and vice versa. We need to know each other and who's capable of doing what and there's no better referral platform than R-Club itself.

Megan Ellsworth: That's so true. That is so true. And we're happy to provide that. So glad you're here.

Kyle Nurminen: All right.

Megan Ellsworth: Okay, lastly, last question. This is the big question. What would your walk-up song be?

Kyle Nurminen: Oh, my walk-up song. So much has changed in my recent life. I did mention I'm a born-again Christian. It's very important at this point in my career to mix my spiritual mission with my professional mission. People think, "Christian rap, what's that?" And there's a Christian rapper out there named Rare of Breed, and he read this song called Souled Out, like "I sold out." If you call it a sold song, I guess I did. I sold out. But it's sold like S-O-U-L-D.

Megan Ellsworth: Oh yeah, yeah.

Kyle Nurminen: I think Rare of Breed's Souled Out. You should play it sometime on lead up next time. That’s a good song.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. Oh my God. Okay, so that's your walk-up song.

Kyle Nurminen: Yeah, I'm a 50-year-old guy listening to Christian rap, so I can't sound the coolest, but it's pretty cool.

Megan Ellsworth: No, that's sick. That's super cool. I love it. I love hearing people... This is my favorite question because it's such a diverse...

Kyle Nurminen: I bet. I bet.

Megan Ellsworth: I've gotten all genres.

Kyle Nurminen: I bet. I bet. I like all kinds of music's. A walk-up? Come on. That's got to be like a walk-up song.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah.

Kyle Nurminen: Classical stuff.

Megan Ellsworth: Triumphant. Well, Kyle, congrats. Congrats to The Metal Roof Experts for being January 2024, end of 2023 Roofer of the Month, Roofer of the Year. So thank you so much. This has been a blast and I hope you have a wonderful rest of your new year.

Kyle Nurminen: I'm sure we will. It's just going to be another one. We got a lot to look forward to this year, and we'll be keeping you posted all along the way. You know it.

Megan Ellsworth: Awesome. Well, congrats again and we'll be seeing you on the coffee break.

Kyle Nurminen: Great. See you there.

See why this Florida-based metal roofing company continues to receive recognition for their excellent safety in the workplace and how you can follow their lead.

How do you prioritize safety in the workplace? At Total Roofing Sytems – The Metal Roof Experts Inc., in Stuart, Florida, safety is second nature to them. For two years in a row, they have been recognized by Workforce Business Services (WBS) for zero claims as part of the Safety Incentive Program. We recently caught up with Luis Martinez, company president, to learn more about their safety priorities and how other companies can reduce the number of claims and injuries on the job.

With the Safety Incentive Program, Total Roofing Systems gets 10% back on their payments each year for having no incidents, and they are extremely proud that they can maintain this standard, especially in the construction industry. When asked about their safety priorities, Luis says, “Number one is our people. Most of our crews have been with us for years, some over 10 years. So, safety has always been part of what we do. Roofing is not easy, but it’s very important that no matter who steps on the roof that they have the proper training, and they know exactly what we’re doing.”

Luis says they also have an advantage being a Hispanic-owned company because a majority of their management team speaks Spanish. He explains, “We speak the language, and I think the language barrier is something that we don’t have with our crews. It’s helped us out a lot to communicate what we need from them when we need it, and if you’re not able to communicate effectively, that could be challenging for other roofers. Crews can’t really say there was a miscommunication, or they didn’t hear us.”

The language barrier can be challenging because it isn’t always a straightforward translation from English to Spanish or the other way around. However, Luis doesn’t see this as a detriment to safety in the workplace for companies that are not bilingual. He suggests, “I think everybody that’s in upper management in a roofing company should do their OSHA 30 or at least their OSHA 10 [training]. Knowing what to look for and how to prepare a job site or make sure you understand what the crews are doing makes it easier to spot it if something is unsafe.”

He continues, “So, it really comes down to training. And so that’s one of the things that all our upper management is required to do and safety at the end of the day is not just the people in the field, but it’s also the people in the office to make sure we’re giving them the tools they need when they go out to the site.”

Specializing in metal roofing, Luis says there aren’t many established programs for learning metal yet. This makes on-the-job training even more critical to being successful. It’s not just about fall protection, but about cutting and properly operating machinery. For Total Roofing Systems – The Metal Roof Experts Inc., the key to safety is having a hands-on management team and investing in their crews.

This initiative aims to turn neglected buildings like old schools and fire stations into thriving educational and entrepreneurial hubs.

Kyle Nurminen of Total Roofing Systems has an ambitious plan to empower inner-city communities: turning underused buildings into makerspaces and collaborative manufacturing facilities. Recently featured in the latest Roofing Road Trips episode, Kyle shared his unique initiative to foster education and entrepreneurship in underprivileged neighborhoods.

Makerspaces, as Kyle explained, are community centers equipped with tools and resources for a wide variety of projects. These spaces can range from woodworking shops to recording studios, serving as "studio space for business development in the skilled trades," as Kyle described.

Initially Kyle had launched SeedRegion1, a platform aimed at uniting the maker community with local industries by mapping makerspaces, coworking spaces and other institutions. Speaking at Gulf Coast Maker Con back in 2016, Kyle said the site’s purpose was to, “Create a new model for Economic Development... growing the seeds we already have in place rather than bringing them from elsewhere.” While SeedRegion1.com is no longer active, its spirit lives on through Kyle's continued advocacy for collaborative spaces.

Kyle pointed out that many young people in urban areas are already getting exposure to engineering programs and other training, but what they often lack is an environment to apply those skills. "They just lack the opportunity," he said. Turning abandoned spaces into thriving centers could have multiple benefits, from crime reduction to job creation.

“We can revitalize our own neighborhoods affordably for our own future workforces,” Kyle said. “Let's take care of our own. I think that's what we need to start doing.”

As communities grapple with economic challenges, Kyle Nurminen’s model offers a blueprint for grassroots revitalization, fostering a future where opportunity is an accessible reality.

Intro/Outro: Welcome to Roofing Road Trips with Heidi. Explore the roofing industry through the eyes of a long-term professional within the trade. Listen for insights, interviews, and exciting news in the roofing industry today.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: Hello, and welcome to another Roofing Road Trips from RoofersCoffeeShop. This is Heidi Ellsworth. And we're here today to talk about something different, something that's an initiative that we all need to think about. And our friend, Kyle Nurminen, came and talked to me about this. And I am so excited to bring his ideas to all of you. So, let's get started. Kyle, welcome to the show.

Kyle Nurminen: Good morning, Heidi. Thanks for having me again.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: Oh. I love it. Thank you. You're our club member. You're so active with RoofersCoffeeShop. But you've made my mind whirl with some of the ideas that you have, and I'm really excited for us to share those. So, first of all, let's start out with an introduction. Why don't you introduce yourself? Give us a little bit of your history in roofing. That would be great.

Kyle Nurminen: Okay. My name is Kyle Nurminen. I hail from Youngstown, Ohio, which is a very urban area, which is pertinent to what we'll be discussing today. And I'm a Navy veteran. And as I got out of the service, I was working my way working through the prison system, finishing my college degree, and graduated with the HR director of the fifth-largest roofing contractor in the nation at the time.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: Nice.

Kyle Nurminen: Yep. That contractor was a big part of the back-to-back hurricanes in the early 2000s. So, I was naturally corporately broken in into commercial roofing, seeing commercial roofing systems fail, and learning all about the environment in Florida. So, I was with them in Detroit up until 2006 when the market crashed. So I just came down here permanently, and I've been down here ever since.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: Tell us what you're doing today.

Kyle Nurminen: So, that's right. Yep. I ended up back here on the east coast of Florida where I initially came down to. After jumping around the state a little bit, I'm now on a metal roof focus, commercial metal roof retrofitting because I found Dynamic Metals has a patented retrofit system, which after 20 years here, was the best system I've ever seen in the market. So, I wanted to go represent it full-time. So, I'm with Total Roofing Systems, their sister company. And that's my clear line of focus, is commercial metal panel retrofitting.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: Man, I love it. I love it. You are so involved with the MetalCoffeeShop too. Thank you for everything. You give us such great content and ideas and thoughts. And we love having Total Roofing and Dynamic involved with us. But I really am excited for you to share your inspiration for inner cities and to help the roofing industry and all industries. So, please share your journey and start sharing that idea with us.

Kyle Nurminen: Well, it started in Tampa Bay when I was over there. And we were having a lot of the conversation we had at the expo recently about how do we fuel the generation of our businesses. So, there was a construction summit between technical schools and employers in the construction industry at the time. That led to me in a leadership, strategic doing, seminar and top out cascading to actually me discovering makerspaces around the Tampa Bay area, and actually mapping those resources as a resource for employers and technical schools to tap into the intellectual property in our most deprived neighborhoods. And you can promote events and bring kids out of these less fortunate areas. Because you can't tell me that a young adult or a child in an urban area has no less capability than the one in the better off suburbs, they just lack the opportunity.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: Exactly, yeah.

Kyle Nurminen: And that's what we're missing. We're missing it in our own neighborhood. So, how do we tap into that? After mapping that entrepreneurial space, business development, advanced engineering design for people that were making trinkets in these makerspaces, which we'll get into more about what those are, we're realizing these kids are working with their hands, and they're learning technical skills and they're learning business skills, and they're learning how to market and run a business model, and all this stuff. And it has nowhere to go because they have nowhere to have a collaborative manufacturing, to set up an assembly line. Have you ever watched Shark Tank, Heidi?

Heidi J. Ellsworth: Yes. Yes, I have.

Kyle Nurminen: Okay. So, somebody goes on Shark Tank. How many times have you heard them say, "Well, you got a good idea, but you're asking me to do everything?"

Heidi J. Ellsworth: Right. Right, yes.

Kyle Nurminen: The only people that are making something are the ones that outsource their labor overseas, and they can do a scalable model that way. Or you see these families turn their entire house and their garage into a soap factory.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: Yeah. Yeah.

Kyle Nurminen: Yeah. All these kids-

Heidi J. Ellsworth: It smells good, but it takes up lot your space.

Kyle Nurminen: Yeah, yeah. Well, these kids in these urban areas, they're going through engineering programs and learning all this stuff, or they're going to makerspaces and learning all this stuff, but they have nowhere to set that up. They don't have that home. They don't have that means to outsource their labor. So, the whole model for the entrepreneurial space was missing a collaborative manufacturing space. And as a roofing industry, this is something we can all dive into. There's available neglected space all throughout our urban areas. The roofing industry is so entrenched into those investors and those building owners and revitalizing those buildings and on the roof side system and all that. They have the contacts. We have the network. They just haven't had much success getting through government to get these buildings donated because they have all other plans they want to do with it and so on and so forth.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: Yeah. And you had mentioned that fire stations, schools, there's so many different buildings that could be used to help with these makerspaces or this collaborative manufacturing with the inner city.

Kyle Nurminen: Absolutely. Absolutely. And a Mr. Employer, or Mr. Educator, can go out there and put on a little Saturday morning challenge, bring out a little hotdog stand, a pop-up bounce studio for the kids to bounce around, make a neighborhood event out of it. Put two little doghouse kits together with all the tools and all the instructions and materials you need to build this doghouse. So, you've got an hour to make this doghouse, go.

And then watch that person like, "Oh, I love it." And it could be the worst doghouse ever, but they enjoyed doing it. And it is. If I'm a framing company or a finishing company, I could say, "Look, did you like doing that? Well, we're going to send you through this school. It'll be part of your employment. You come work for me." And yeah, it's a win-win for everyone. The model of this type of a center includes a training space, a makerspace where you teach people how to use the equipment. You also have a sound studio where you learn every other aspect of a business. So, a business development and graphic design and video broadcasting...

Heidi J. Ellsworth: Podcasting.

Kyle Nurminen: ... and stuff. Podcasting. It all supports the people who contribute to it and the people who are building in it and the profits from what are being made while they're in there creating that scalable model. Go into, fund it.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: I love it. I love it.

Kyle Nurminen: It's viable.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: Well, you put together a video that explains this, which I think is really good. So, let's watch that video right now, and then we're going to come back to it and answer some more questions after that video. So, here you go.

Kyle Nurminen: Sounds good. Let's do it.

Kyle Nurminen (Voiceover): SeedRegion1.com was initially designed to support current economic development practices throughout the Tampa Bay region. However, as it began to develop, we began to question the concept of economic development altogether. The original concept was to pull the talent from around the region in hopes to attract large corporations to relocate their businesses here. In the meantime, existing infrastructure remains in place that is no longer being utilized. It's consuming taxpayers dollars to maintain, and it draws no additional tax revenue to support it. However, if we offer tax breaks and utility discounts to outside corporations, we might entice them to rid us of that nuisance while updating our infrastructure and creating jobs at the same time. But this is what really ends up happening. The upper echelons of this large corporation will likely come from elsewhere, and this is where the bulk of the money will remain. Most of the jobs created to support our community will be at the lowest wage levels. By advancing a few of our residents to mid-level management, they will hope to demonstrate the financial impact they're allegedly making within this community.

The actual odds on someone from our immediate community making it to the top are very slim. It may turn out well for a few, but not enough to make an overall impact on our immediate economy. In reality, most of the revenue generated by this company winds up being invested from once it came, elsewhere. But what if? What if our EDC investors took those dollars lost to maintenance, tax incentives, and utility discounts, and invested them into revitalizing our existing infrastructure instead? By turning these facilities into makerspaces and collaborative manufacturing facilities, we could create a talent pool for our own educators and existing businesses. Simultaneously, we would produce a breeding ground for entrepreneurialism and begin building our own businesses from the ground up, not just one, but many.

From the ground level, we would create skilled laborers, and offer them the experience necessary to move up in management with their own or other regional companies. An entirely new pool of talent that can now afford a higher education. Once degrees are obtained, managers may advance to the upper echelons of their original business or others in the region, while our schools are supplied with readily available individuals interested in pursuing an advanced degree or becoming a professor themselves. Now, here's the greatest part. All of this money, all of this potential was grown from the seeds of our own community, and here it shall remain. Growing new seeds, and developing exponential growth of our economy.

This video production was created by Kenny DeStefano of the Stefano Productions.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: Kyle, that is an amazing video. That was your voice. You did the voiceover on that?

Kyle Nurminen: Yeah, yeah. Yes, I did. I just say I got a little radio voice.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: Yeah. You do, you do. I'm going to have to watch out for you on podcasting. I think that explains it so well. But I think one of the things that I really want to dive in a little bit deeper for everybody out there so they really understand is makerspaces. I don't know if everybody knows what that is, or that it's so... It's really everywhere. And maybe people do, maybe they don't. But what are makerspace?

Kyle Nurminen: So, makerspaces are any type of an urban, or not even an urban, doesn't have to be urban, most of them are, but available spaces that are converted to serve some type of a purpose to the community. So, say, I have a wood shop in my backyard. Some of these people have full garages and wood shops. And on the weekends, they open it to the public, or anybody who wants to come in and learn how to use the machinery or create something. When I first moved over to Tampa Bay area, I had a piece of furniture. I refurbished furniture.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: Oh, cool.

Kyle Nurminen: And I had a broken frame that I needed to weld. And that's how I found out about them. I'm like, I just need a place where I can go and either learn how to weld or they weld it for me. I want to learn how to do it myself. And there was a makerspace for welders. It was a shop. And this guy actually had a separate building off of his business in the back, and turned it in this little makerspace where people do welding projects.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: It's awesome.

Kyle Nurminen: And you'd be amazed what gets created and founded in these things. Some of them are recording studios, like old libraries. Obviously, libraries aren't what they used to be with technology and internet and everything. So, they're converting a lot of them into robotics spaces, or recording studios and graphic design studios. And you can go in there free of charge or there's a membership fee. And that was the thing, was they didn't... So, the employers and the construction summit were trying to figure out where are these things. Well, some of them have Facebook pages, some of them don't. Some of them have actual websites. Some them have membership fees, some of them completely free.

So, we needed to map those resources. They're all over. Tampa Bay was just a nice cylindrical community, of the tech community and supporting everything that supported it. So, that made it easier. Here on Florida's east coast, it's all linear. So, you're in clusters of communication. You have to go so far to even coordinate efforts. So, that makes it really difficult over here. So, a lot of people on this side of our state don't even understand that they exist in their area.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: I had never heard of them before. I've seen collaborative spaces, but I didn't quite get it. And so, that alone, getting this concept out to the roofing industry, that there are these maker spaces and how can they be involved with them. But I like where you've taken it with that bigger concept. If you think about it, putting together your SeedRegion. Region, did I say that right? The name of your concept?

Kyle Nurminen: Yeah. We actually labeled the website that we created SeedRegion1.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: Yes. SeedRegion1?

Kyle Nurminen: What you can do... Yes.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: Yes. And everyone can check out that website. We'll also have it on the directory, because we're going to do a directory on this so that people can find all the information. Yes.

Kyle Nurminen: Unfortunately, the website's no longer... I'm sorry, but the website's been down for a number of years.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: Well, then what you're going to have to do, that's...

Kyle Nurminen: We have to start from scratch.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: You're just going to have to come to RoofersCoffeeShop because we're going to have a directory on this. So, we'll get all your information of Kyle so people can find it, start being able to have that conversation, talking back and forth, because really the concept of... First of all, I want to talk about what you need to make this happen in your area, but then I really want to talk about too, inspiring other roofing contractors to really start getting involved more in the inner cities and looking at your model. So, let's start with you. And where are you at? And what are you looking for? What do you need in order to make this collaborative space happen?

Kyle Nurminen: I need a space. You can't really plan for anything until you know a space. And a space can be like a library or it can be a giant warehouse space sitting down in a shipping port of Fort Pierce that's just sitting there, rotting, that nobody wants to do anything with. If I were to put a retrofit on that roof system, the six figure profit on it would pay for me to start that whole makerspace itself. It starts with us as an industry. Of course, here on a Treasure Coast where we're headquartered, would be helpful. So, I can actually create the model, and then we can help duplicate the model. And in the meantime, other roofers around the country can be starting to look into these makerspaces and try to find out where they're at, and start stepping out and tapping into those resources in our own communities.

And then while we can do a model, a mockup here, thus SeeRegion1, to show what we can do by planting seeds within our own intellectual property, in our own local communities, how we can benefit and drive our future workforce. So, once we create that model, then we can duplicate that model. We know exactly much more what we're looking for. So, you are restricted by the space. Once you know you have a space, then you start tapping into, "Okay. Well, what type of sheet metal equipment can we get donated so these people can learn to work with sheet metal?" I know a couple of companies that can do that right now.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: Yeah, exactly.

Kyle Nurminen: Yeah. Electronics, plasma cutters, graphic design. You have to realize that this is a studio space for business development in the skilled trades. The future of our companies just doesn't rely on roofers. And people that know how to do metal roof systems or single ply or shingles, really what about the marketing person? What about the business development? What about the foreman and the production supervisor, the CRM administrator? All these things can be created in this space as you learn how to create small businesses, and you create this talent and the skillset that would've not otherwise been discovered.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: And then they either are looking at starting their own businesses, or they're looking at going into the roofing industry because they've had this great experience and they've been able to meet roofing professionals who are encouraging them and helping them and bringing them on, and they now have a skilled trade, whether that's in a sheet metal shop or out running a business, a roofing business. There's so many options.

Kyle Nurminen: And that's the thing is a lot of these people don't know. When you and I were raised, we were taught, you go into this and that's what you do. You go to school to do this, and that's what you do. That's not feasible anymore. So, really, business is business, and people are people. And we had this conversation previously. Put you in an environment that needs all of that, find out where you... And I mentor young adults and young professionals, and that's my advisement to them, just get into the job market with a company that's going to be flexible in moving you and figuring out where you fit best.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: Find you your strengths.

Kyle Nurminen: Then get that then experience in that area. Then if you have a specific market you want to go through, then you can go for advanced education or go into that market. Look for those job opportunities specifically to your experience now that you obtained in the roofing industry, or the AC industry, or the plumbing industry, all the trades that work together under roofing. We have a huge network of everybody that could dive into this. And like I said, the marketing, these kids are going to need something to work and practice on their marketing and stuff. They're going to market on the people that are contributing to it. So, it all pays for itself. Yes.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: I love this. I think it's something... And I like how you're breaking it down into really bite-sized pieces. So, first job for everybody listening to this...

Kyle Nurminen: I tried to.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: ... look for makerspaces, look for them, get involved, collaborative spaces, see how that can work with your company and get some ideas. Step two, look for buildings that maybe can be retrofitted into collaborative spaces to start making a makerspace, but a bigger... I like how you say, a collaborative manufacturing facility where people can come together. And as they are looking for those buildings, that is when they really need to be talking to their building owners, property management, local officials, however they can do that. Because if they can get that and then talk to you, you never know what can... I love how you're starting on the Treasure Coast.

Kyle Nurminen: Yeah. And I can tell you a little bit about how that conversation might look. You could say, "Look, this government, this old burnout firehouse has been sitting here for five years. They've had the new one already built. It was county properties and offices. Now you built a new county building. Everybody moved in there. Now you're just storing records here. It's really not generating any tax dollars or revenue. How about if you move all these files out of here, put them in your new building, put them elsewhere, and let us move in? Give me six months to race and support, get the furniture in, retrofit it to what I need it to do, then give me a year on that pipeline to show a scalable model."

So, at the end of the 18 months to 24 months, we can start talking about, "Hey, are we at a point? The goal would be that we could at least pay the taxes and pay the utilities at that time." And then in the following years to come, let's look at, "Hey, can we potentially buy this property? Or lease this property? Or now that we build it up, are you going to sell it out from under us? And we'll find someplace else, that's okay. We got to prove our model. And now we're at a better point where we can take it someplace else and do the same thing."

So, that's the point of the incremental conversation that you should be having in your communities when you find these opportunities, whether they're private or government-owned.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: Yeah. And you talk a lot about also being engaged in that community. Because once that community has a facility or a makerspace, collaborative manufacturing space in that community, it starts rising the community. So, talk a little bit about that.

Kyle Nurminen: Yes. Habitat Humanity approached me about this model over in Bradenton. There was a neglected, a neighborhood, took it through and they interview. Well, none of the kids were staying because there's nothing there for them. So, that was the complaint, was an old neighborhood is falling apart, and a younger generation was just leaving, going elsewhere for opportunities. He said, "What can we do here?" I said, "Well, there's this elementary school in the middle of it. And we set up the model and we're saying, Listen, from the law of retails, if it costs you a dollar to make it and you can wholesale it for $2 and then you can retail it for $4, then it's a viable model for manufacturing." And so, if you can get to those constraints, then you can make it in this space so that, the $1 to $2, that covers the overhead.

So, if I have eight or nine of those assembly lines in every dollar that's being made, I'm making a dollar, I'm paying for the utilities, I'm paying for the property. From the $2 to $4, the markup in the profit while that business is in there as a nonprofit expenditure, and it goes into an account to revitalize the surrounding neighborhood. So, there's a committee formed within the people in the neighborhood to say, "Hey. Old Mr. Jones has been walking up on his porch, and he's still making it. He's 85 years old, but his porch is going to fall on his head. Can't we just take his porch off and put a nice stairwell or a ramp to his front of his house."
Also, in that neighborhood, there was a crime corner. It was an abandoned lot. There's no property on. It was just overgrown. And it was dark. "Can't we just clear the property and put a nice fence around it, maybe put a streetlight on the corner. How much would that cost?"

We would dip into this fund to do these little incremental things, and what happens, because I lived on the east side of Detroit, people start getting pride in their neighborhood, and they start looking out their windows now, and they start paying attention. And you know what? The police notice this, and they start coming around. They start looking out for those people more. All throughout Detroit, if there's nobody who caress, the cops don't care either. They'll sit right there in the dark along and just watch the crime happen. But if there's something to protect, now they have a purpose. Everybody just wants a purpose. So, then the crime doesn't want to deal with it, they just go someplace else. So, we can revitalize this whole community around this makerspace. The problem with that one is I couldn't get the school rezoned to light industrial. That's what it would take.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: That would what's it take. So, sometimes it's going to be private. It's going to be private where you can... Although if it's in the wrong zone, it's in the wrong zone. So Kyle, I love this. And I have to say, we had... And I know you watched it earlier this year, we had a coffee conversations with Java, and they talking about doing a similar thing in Chicago where they're working in the inner city. They ended up having 200 kids who were looking to get into the skilled trades, and who had never been asked. So really, the question is, do we have a labor shortage? Or are we just looking in the wrong places? And this is what you're saying.

Kyle Nurminen: Yeah, we're passing up the same neighborhoods every single day. We're looking at the schools. We're telling kids, "You got to go to school. You got to go to technical school." And you're telling them in high schools that don't have trades in them anymore. So, these kids really have no idea where they want to go. So, they end up after high school sitting in their neighborhoods and getting in trouble and piddling away just until something just lands in their lap. Well, let's place it in their lap. Let's go to their neighborhoods and place it in their lap and put it right in smack dab in the middle of their neighborhood and say... And then also raise the support of the community and their parents and their grandparents that we're going to start contributing to this revitalization of the community. We're going to build the place because where else... The way things are going, I know down here in southeast Florida, the people that work for us can't afford to live here.

So, we can revitalize our own neighborhoods affordably for our own future workforces to live, rather than worrying about remodeling the hotel downtown or putting millions of dollars into a river walk for more tourists. Let's take care of our own. I think that's what we need to start doing. Yeah, absolutely.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: And I think there's roofing companies all over this country who are going to listen to this and say, "Yes, this is something we want to do."

Kyle Nurminen: I hope so.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: And it's going to take time. I don't think anybody...

Kyle Nurminen: Absolutely.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: ... has misconceptions about how long this takes, but the only way to do it is to get started.

Kyle Nurminen: Absolutely. Absolutely.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: That's great. Kyle, thank you. Thank you so much for this amazing Roofing Road Trips podcast. Like I said, we're going to have your... I'm going to call it SeedRegion. We're going to have SeedRegion on the directory. As this grows, we may rename it and we'll have another podcast. But right now, if you're looking for Kyle and you're looking to find out more about this, look for the directory, SeedRegion, but also look for Total Roofing Systems directory also, which is also on RoofersCoffeeShop, part of the R-Club. So, lots of places where you can get ahold of Kyle. And of course, you can just ask me, heidi@rooferscoffeeshop.com, and I will introduce you. So Kyle, I'll be seeing you again on this Roofing Road Trips.

Kyle Nurminen: Absolutely. Let's stick to that strategic doing model of 30, 60, 90, and have another conversation in 30 days and find out if it's gone anywhere.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: That sounds great.

Kyle Nurminen: And then once we do, then that 30 days, you decide what you're going to do with the people you have and what resources you have for the next 30 days, 30, 60, 90.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: [inaudible 00:24:38]

Kyle Nurminen: 30, 60, 90. It can be that easy.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: I love it. Let's do it. Okay.

Kyle Nurminen: All right. Let's do it.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: Enjoy. Take care of yourself in Florida. And we'll be back soon.

Kyle Nurminen: All right. Have a blessed day everyone. Thank you.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: You too. Thank you all for listening. Really, please get involved. Let me know if you're interested, I can get you with Kyle. If you are in Florida, please step forward. Kyle wants to bring people together to really start putting together a proof of concept on this. So, let's have those conversations.

FRSA convention attendees discussed relevant industry topics, how recent changes have impacted the roofing trade and what roofing professionals should expect over the next year.

The Coffee Conversations cast recently broadcasted the webinar live from the 101st FRSA convention in Orlando, Florida, to meet with a panel of industry experts sponsored by SRS Distribution. The expert panel featured guests Keenan Perry of SRS Distribution, Mike Sheehan of Suncoast, Sara Jones of ICP Group, Kyle Nurminen of Total Roofing Systems and John Kenney of Cotney Consulting Group. Together with host, Heidi J. Ellsworth, the panelists discussed the current state of the roofing industry in Florida and what they anticipate the next year will look like for the industry.

The Florida Roofing and Sheet Metal Contractors Association (FRSA) recently held their annual convention where roofing and metal professionals from across the country gathered to experience educational speaker events and seminars, mentorship and networking sessions and visit exhibitor booths featuring the latest industry innovations and products. The Coffee Conversations webinar was also recorded live at the convention where industry leaders sat down to discuss industry trends, insights about the local Florida roofing community and how they were enjoying the FRSA convention itself!

The panelists highlighted the changes they have recently noticed in the Florida roofing industry, with the recent onslaught of bad weather, labor shortages and new state legislation. These factors have made many take a cautious approach, however, not everyone is letting these unknowns get in the way of their optimism.

Kyle with Total Roofing Systems, based in Stewart, Florida, explained, “Where people see caution, I see an opportunity... The best thing that contractors and everybody can be doing right now is focused on what they're best at.”

He pointed out that now is the time to focus on what you’re good at and build relationships with other experts in the industry to form a strong network. “Being conservative and cautious is one thing, but you still have to be really aggressive in what you're good at so you can get ahead of the slow times that are coming, so that's where we're really focused.”

While inflation and interest rates fluctuating and changing, from the manufacturer point of view, there’s positivity to be found amidst the uncertainty. Sara Jones of ICP Group, said, “In coating and restorations, when there's inflation, oftentimes it actually opens up more opportunities for us because the cost to do a re-roof is increasing, and so people start looking at restorations a little bit more.”

I'm with Total Roofing Systems out of Stewart, Florida. I've been in the commercial roofing industry, a little bit in residential as well, over the past 20 years. Like Mike here, I came straight out of college, finished my business degree with the HR director, the fifth-largest roofing contractor in the nation at the time. I came up in the back to back hurricanes down here in Florida in the early 2000s. That's how I really broken in. Because of that, my area of expertise is portfolio management, proactive maintenance, and large long-term investment planning, so the coatings really come into it. I just actually had a three-year hiatus in specifically coatings and now I'm focusing specifically on metal at this time of my career.

Let me just kind of set the stage here just a little bit. We have distribution, we have manufacturing, we have contracting, and we have consulting, and pretty much John's done everything. We are going to be talking about some issues that are going on, not issues, but just what's happening in Florida, and so we wanted to get all these different perspectives, which I love. Let's start. We're going to actually start with the FRSA show because here we are and it's huge. I mean it really is the biggest I've ever seen, I really think. Keenan, I'd love to start with you. How's the show going and what do you think?

Keenan Perry: So far, it's just been fantastic. We go to these trade shows as often as we can, specifically the FRSA. This is maybe one of the best turnouts of a trade show that I've seen in the past couple of years, especially after the hiatus of COVID, and so I'm glad to see the trade shows are full back in swing, and we've had a full booth all day, so yeah, we're happy.

Heidi J. I know that.

Sara Jonas: It's good, Yeah.

The booth's been full the whole morning. I assume it's full right now as well. There's a lot of traffic. I was actually talking to one of my colleagues about the first time I was at FRSA because it was probably 20 years ago, and it was a tiny ballroom with just tables set up kind of all around. This is so different. It's very big, very active, which is really exciting, and the swag is going.

Heidi J. I'll just tell you what, my career has been a plethora for working every side of every fence, and I'm always learning. This is an opportunity for me to reconnect with other distributors and their options because we're always diversifying, we're always changing, we're always relying on consultants, we're also trying to advise consultants on what we're doing that's new, and this is just a plethora of skilled trades knowledge. Nobody's perfect and everybody learns from everybody else here, and that's what I really love about it. It's really open form.

It continues to grow each and every year, which is amazing when you think about it. I am seeing a lot of new faces here this year, which I really enjoy seeing that because that means we're getting more and more of the industry involved. Yesterday, I did an education class, education seminar, and estimating, it was full with standing room only. All the education classes I've seen have been that way. Just to give a plug, if you're still here tomorrow, I'm doing a repeat at 7:00 AM. Come up and say hello. I'd love to meet you.

The classes are so good. If you're not here at FRSA, but you still want to get some education from John, check out RoofersCoffeeShop because John is on there. Okay, let's talk Florida. There has been a lot going on in Florida. Florida's kind of been the talk of the country. Usually, I always say between Florida and California, everything starts and hits in the middle at some point, but Florida really has seen the weather, the legislation, just everything going on. I want to start, and maybe, Mike, start with you on what... We did this last year, and a lot has happened in the last year. What are some of the things that you're seeing over the last year that's really been changing in Florida?

Mike Sheehan: Obviously, the hurricane is going to change the market for us, especially down in South Florida. It's created a whirlwind of business for everybody. Obviously, pointing back to the immigration, that's become an issue. I believe it went into effect July 1st, so there's some headwinds on the horizon there, so to speak. In terms of labor, maintaining labor crews are getting harder and harder to come by, but for the most part, hopefully, we can come out of it on top. I don't see it slowing down business per se yet, but again, it just went into effect. I just don't see how that plays out.

Heidi J.
Mike Sheehan: Yeah, no, for the past couple of years, it seems like it's just been a roller coaster, but between price increases, everything, labor in itself for a long time was an issue just trying to find drivers, loaders, CDL drivers. We're on a shortage there for a while. From the distribution standpoint, it definitely got a little bit crazy, but it all moves so quick and you get through it. Ultimately, we've seen some relief on that side in terms of our labor. It's more the contractor's labor that, I think, is going to take a little bit of a hit here, so to speak, next couple months.

Heidi J. Wow. Well, Sara, with ICP and APOC, we had the honor of being at your plant and trading center on Monday. You are very meshed in the Florida market, or the company is overall, and APOC. What are some of the things that you all are seeing? I mean you do both residential and commercial.

Sara Jonas: We do. All the same things that you just said, we're seeing an impact. Obviously, there's been a labor shortage. At 10% to 15% more onto that, we're seeing an impact of mad hurricanes are always impactful either because we had a big hurricane and then the next year we have you know so it flows, but I think overall, what we're seeing is everyone is treading very cautiously. There are a lot of unknowns, and while we're all very optimistic, things have been going well, everyone's being very cautious, so that's kind of what we're seeing.

Heidi J. Kyle, we kind of got to know each other and started doing things together last year. What's happened? What have you been seeing this past year?

Kyle Nurminen: Well, I'm a salesman, so cautiousness scares me. Where people see caution, I see an opportunity. The only thing, if you've ever read the book From Good to Great, you understand that the best thing that contractors and everybody can be doing right now is focused on what they're best at. Yes, you can be cautious as far as dabbling in something you may not have done any before because there's plenty of knowledge and expertise across the industry. I've been focusing more on networking with those suppliers that have certain supplies, the coatings for certain applications, and I just say that's what I use. In that case, I use this contractor for this application that I don't do, so I'm diversifying what I'm capable of doing because I'm relying on those relationships, and then those relationships come back to me and what I'm good at. I've been really aggressive with that.

Being conservative and cautious is one thing, but you still have to be really aggressive in what you're good at so you can get ahead of the slow times that are coming, so that's where we're really focused. We took on the name the metal of experts in 2018, and now we have a real strong focus on the commercial side and corrosive environments, so that's where we got involved with the Tedlar. We're now approved by FiberTite, so this is our area of expertise and this is what we focus on. Everything else, it's a rat race, yes, and they should be cautious trying to be everything for everybody. I don't think that's what people need to be doing right now. You rely on this guy to direct those people into what area of expertise and who's best in what they do.

Heidi J. John, what have you been seeing? You talked to contractors all over the state, all over the country.

John Kenney: Well, definitely in Florida, two biggest issues now are immigration change. No one's really sure of the total impact, but it just doesn't affect roofing and construction. It affects the farm, the agriculture, the tourist industry. The pool of labor is short to begin with, and now it's even tighter than it was, and we're all competing for the same general area of it. We'll see where that works at.

Heidi J.
John Kenney: What took effect on July 1st is a couple of things. If you're a roofing contractor and have 25 or more employees, which is not Houston field, this is total in your company, you are required to e-verify through the federal system to prove that you are of legal status. That is brand new. Even the federal government doesn't require that to that extent. The other part of that is if you have to prove that your sub crew, if you're using it, the fault also goes back onto the contractor that they are legal, so you've got that tying in. Then you have your sub crews that if someone is illegal on there and they're driven to a job site and they're found to be illegal, it affects the driver even if the driver is perfectly 100% legal citizen.

The fines are different depending on what you do, but in a nutshell, it really affects the business owner at the end because you can lose your license first time for 30-day penalty where you can't operate, then it goes to 60, and then after your third time, you can lose your license on a permanent basis. The fines are nowhere near as great of the fact that you're restricted at the end of business because honestly, I know people are listening out there and saying, "Well, just don't hire illegals," it's a lot harder than just don't hire illegals. These are people who have been embedded in our society for decades. Maybe they were when it came over, work visas might run out. Whatever the problem or reason is, you've now taken the burden and really shifted it 100% to the legal license contractor in the state. That's bottom line.

Heidi J.
John Kenney: All of them. It goes on your business license. If you're listed from another state, not everyone requires licenses as tight as Florida, but Florida, it's a test. You have a license, it's like gold. If you lose that, you may never get it back.

Heidi J.
John Kenney: Absolutely. I think if I jump on the other one a little bit here, the insurance, right? It's really affecting the coatings industry big time. I get calls on this all the time. I'm also on the board of FRSA and I sit on the coats committee, and I hear about the change that are going. What's actually happening around the state started out with mainly combos and stuff where they would not ensure the owner if they put a coating system over top of an existing roof. Well, now it's expanding out into commercial facilities because, like it or not, insurance companies do not want to pay for roofs. They want to limit their risk. With the recent, I'm going to say debacle in the state of their registration for insurance reform, it got worse instead of better.

What's happening is when I was doing some research and tracking it back, how they're managing to get around this and not have it is when you go to usually most Florida product approvals or NOAs for coating, it says maintenance system on it, not roof system, and you look at them and that's how they're holding their hat. Now, if they get beyond that, what they're holding it on is, "Well, we don't know how well the roof you're covering. Is it here? What kind of deck? Did you do the test?" Not the adhesion from the coating to the system. The actual adhesion of the underside. It's so difficult that the building owners put their hands up at that point and say, "I don't want to be involved in this" so this is not going to get better, it's going to get worse because it's just beginning. A lot of things are affecting homeowners with the insurance. I by myself live in Florida. My homeowner's insurance has doubled in the last year.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: Everybody did.
John Kenney: If I was to make a wild projection for our folks out there, I would say, what's going to happen to reform this? Roofs are going to be excluded and they're going to have to have a separate policy to get roofs covered upon storm damage replacement.

Kyle Nurminen: I've seen that on the community side, on my side of things because I deal with community associations a lot, and that's what they're doing. There's separately financing their roof insurance. We're taking that out of their policy. The number of companies that are allowing that, that's the next question, your next phase, but that's what a lot of communities were being forced to do because I've been on 10 year roofs, historic buildings that whereas it was a 10-year modified bitumen roof, they have an excellent silicone restoration on it. It's like you'll never have to re-roof that again. You just maintain the coating. They won't even sell the building. The buyer cannot get insured unless he replaces it.

Heidi J. What are you seeing with this new immigration law started early in July and how it's going to affect our market?

Mike Sheehan: Again, I can really only speak to South Florida. That's my primary market. It does seem to be the trend across Florida is it appears that the commercial guys are taking a little bit more of a hit on this one. I again talked to some residential guys. A lot of those crews that they do have are permanent crews and have been there a long time and usually are fully legal at that point anyway, but the commercial crews, and especially for South Route, I'm in Palm Beach County, so it's a little bit better, but definitely as you go further south into Broward and [inaudible 00:19:25], which are again large commercial silicon income coating markets, it's becoming an issue on the labor side within [inaudible 00:19:34].

I know it's an uphill battle to your point. I mean it's constantly ever-changing and it seems like every year, a new idea, a new policy or something comes out. It's a struggle for everybody. Pretty much I don't know anybody who's really navigating it well or saying, "Oh, I'm super stoked about the insurance situation in Florida." It's a headache for homeowners, it's for contractors, ultimately for distributors because if it's tendering work and not allowing jobs to start, then it's a problem for all of us.

Heidi J. Well, one of the things I've been just hearing a little bit about, and I don't know if I'm going to bring this question out of the... It wasn't on our sheet, let me just say that, but I am hearing that there are times that we're hearing insurance companies are basically saying, "These are the contractors you should use." Are you seeing too much of that where they're kind of mandating who, what contractors you use or not?

Kyle Nurminen: Wow, I better think about that one.

Heidi J.
Kyle Nurminen: I can't say I agree with that. I'm a little bit frustrated even in the building industry alone, let alone the insurance industry, that some specifications now are being written and based on the lower level systems, the more affordable roof systems, and so they're not taking into account the advantages of spending a little bit more to do things right. That seems to be, sorry, but it's a lot on the manufacturer side of leading those specifications, but it's teaching me to learn how to work with manufacturers and with consultants, and fully educating the customer first. Believe it or not, when it does come to insurance, the property owner does start to have some rights. I think our governor's starting to back that up after this last hurricane coming through. That's why I say business is good for us because the only roofs left standing were the metal.

It's really good for us. We understand that there are some talk in the industry of phasing into mostly predominantly getting rid of shingle and going in the metal. Now, it's a lot of rumor mill right now, so I don't want to comment on that too much beyond that, but those are the types of diversity and things we're always talking about. I think it's important that we all work together to find a solution, and that involves insurance companies. There are some people out there that are trying to drive a specification for their own greed, and that's kind of why we're in a situation we're in, so conferences like this are huge and this type of conversation is what we need to continue having.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: We want everybody to win. At the end of the day, everybody along the challenge, most likely, and mostly the consumer, should win, but also the insurance companies. I mean there's no reason not to work together.

Kyle Nurminen: Well, that's what frustrates me. I talk in front of boards all the time and talk about their level of liability for making these discussions and saying, yeah, this manufacturer is covered under their warranty, but who ends up being left holding the bill? It's the homeowner, the property owner. I've been seeing it for 20 years and I'm tired of it. This is why I'm so proactive in keeping this communication going. Bridging the gaps between the silos is what we need to keep doing.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: Yeah, it's so true. What are your folks in the field seeing, Sara, when it comes to the contractors and just... I've seen what you're doing and I've seen the trainings that Johnny Walker's doing, and that seems to be a big part of what you're offering to make sure things are done right.

Sara Jonas: Yeah, that's our focus is all in training. We do have the certified applicator program. We focus a lot and we do a lot of education including on RoofersCoffeeShop on when a restoration is a possibility and when it should not be because there are a lot of roofs where you should not be trying to restore that, you should not be putting a coating on that. At the end of the day, we want a quality system, we want a quality roof, we want the property owner to be happy with what we've done there, and we want it to succeed, so it's just as important to educate on when not to do something as it is when and how to do it properly so we focus a lot on training.

Heidi J. I think that's so important. Well, I want to kind of move on a little bit to where we're at with the economy and what we've been seeing with inflation, interest rates, all those kinds of things, but before I do, I just want to make sure we cover everything on the immigration part of it.

John Kenney: Yeah, I can tag one thing on the insurance. When they just did the recent insurance reform bill took effect six, eight months ago now, one of the good things that did come out of it is they separated completely contractors from adjusters where licenses were, so if there is an adjuster insurance company using favoritism towards roofers, it is illegal now in the state of Florida to do that.

Heidi J. Okay.

John Kenney: That's just only I want to tag in. A lot of people don't know that's out there, but it is the same way as a roofing contractor can no longer legally represent a homeowner with the insurance, bypass the homeowner to go directly to the insurance company, so it goes both ways now. That was one of the good things that came out of the reform.

Heidi J. On a national level, what are you seeing right now across the country with interest rates, inflation? How are contractors dealing with that and what are you seeing?

Keenan Perry: Sure. From a national standpoint, I think we just saw that inflation rates are starting to come back down a bit, which I think is going to help everyone, but I think Florida's sort of in its own little silo where it's still pretty high. That could be market driven, so again, I can't speak to Florida, but from the supply side, we've been busier than ever. We really can't say anything more about what's going on right now on a national scale.

Heidi J. What about in Florida? What do you see?

Mike Sheehan: Anywhere on a coastal city like West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, all the way up to Jacksonville, Tampa, Clearwater area, the inflation aspect definitely still feels real there. The cost of living in Florida is high, but overall, the inflation rates, they just come out... I think the new report came out three or four days ago. There's kind of that bells curve where it's probably going to take a while to get to Florida in terms of the insurance or the inflation affecting us in coming down, but definitely at this point, it helps contractors, cost, and material. Obviously, lower inflation is the direction we want to have with this. Overall, the Florida, it's like I said, economy's just been booming what feels like the past four or five years I've been in this industry and selling in Florida, so I'd say we're pretty fortunate to be here in this state.

Heidi J.
Mike Sheehan: Yeah, I think there's a major backlog for new construction coming out of these XOVID years so the projects were in the pipeline. It's just nobody had the material at the time to start them and get them out. In terms of new ground and new contracts being broke, I think there was a little bit of a lag or a mold there just, again, playing catch up, but going into, again, now especially with that hurricane, I know Fort Myers, South Florida, Fort St. Luton, yes, Stewart, new construction all over the place. I definitely think there might've been a lag, but again, there's multiple variables to what might've caused that. My best guess would probably be backlogged from building.

Heidi J. From the manufacturing side, what are you seeing in Florida, and just overall with interest rates and inflation, and kind of where the market seems to be leveling out?

That said, in coating and restorations, when there's inflation, oftentimes it actually opens up more opportunities for us because the cost to do a re-roof is increasing, and so people start looking at restorations a little bit more. There's an impact. Some of it's good and some of it's bad.

Like I said, I spent three years in coatings, I know all the coatings as a roofing contractor doesn't fill a lot of coatings. If I have one small coating crew that's going to do something, I'm going to pick probably a quality coating that has a plethora of different flashing options that cover every single different substrate, like any pot line, it's fantastic, and certify my guys in that. If I'm going to do a coating at all, I'm going to go that route, and that's it. Otherwise, I'm going to refer out some coating companies for relationships that I've made like here and say these guys are good at that, these guys are good at that. I'll set it up for them.

I'll find out what are your hurts? What are your pains? What's your budget? Where are you at in this situation with this property? Then I'll refer out those contractors based on what they're best at. Really that's what it takes because there is another fallout's going to be coming. How much it impacts Florida is going to be yet to seen because we're probably going to be the strongest through just like we were through the last recession. I think we'll probably be pulling pretty strong through it, but from a contractor's point of view, we still have that forethought to say, "Hey, let's not try to do everything for everybody. Let's be best at what we're at so we have that strong reputation." I think on the contractor's level, it's the guys that are just trying to sell everything just to sell a job that aren't going to last. They're not going to make it. Just like a real estate agent through the last, the real ones make it all the way through because they know how to adjust through those times, and that's what contractors need to do as well.

Heidi J.
John Kenney: Anybody that's listened to me before, you know I live by numbers. Numbers never lies unless it's bad information. We've been listening about the great pandemic recession that was supposed to come at the end of that last year, but it'll be mid this year, but right now when you look at all the experts, it's probably not coming. There is not a recession out there, but that being said, when we make it into '24, historically, that's big election year. Usually, the country never goes into a recession during an election year because it's not good for anyone. I would say we may be out of that partial recession. Will there be recession? Absolutely. Ebb and flows. It's going to happen. I don't think we're ever going to see that deep one that they said was coming. I don't think you're going to see that.

Now, popping back, backlog nationally seems pretty good, and I think a lot of that is the catastrophic weather events that is happening all over the country. There is constantly work demand out there. Florida, I think, has got hit pretty hard on a recessionary basis, and I don't mean comparing that to the national recession. Our rents have doubled in the state. What I'm hearing from contractors around the state is they can't get labor to live locally to where they're operating at because it's too expensive for their workers to live there, which in turn to keep people not going up 5%, 10%, 15% in labor, there's companies paying 30%, 40% raises and labor just to keep their existing force.

Heidi J. I think that is a localized because we are the highest rent increase in the US for Florida as a whole, so I think that's part of the reason we're feeling it. Then the other business crunches, insurance, and then you talked the immigration, we talked about, you put all that together, we're pretty tight in this state as far as what's squeezing the contractor to be profitable.

It's spot on. It's definitely a challenge there. The broader economic with Florida being the insurance companies, it's creating a perfect storm, so to speak, where there could be some heavy headwinds there, so to speak again, so yeah, I agree.

Heidi J. I think that's so important. Going back to what you were just talking about, John, let's talk about training. There is so much going on right now that, for skilled labor, whether it's CTE, career and technical education, or just industry education and training is so important right now. How are some of the contractors? What are you seeing? How are they getting their crews trained and what are they doing?

John Kenney: It's interesting. Really, this labor shortage got worse in the last 15, 20 years, but I could tell you from starting out roofing in the late '70s, labor started to become an issue in the trades as early as mid '80s to '90s. It's really always been there, so we've been focused on that, we're still focused on that, but a recent study that I just read through FMI, which I found extremely interesting, is of all the companies in construction, including roofers, they included them in across the United States, field labor was a 25% to 30% issue for them that they're worried about. It's the managerial positions, crew leaders, superintendents, project managers, C level, estimators because they're retiring and there's no one to replace them, and there's no backup system for it. Now, it's not just let's worry about field because you have to have that. Now, all of a sudden in the next five years, they're expecting catastrophic problems across the entire construction structure of a construction company.

Heidi J. You really do. You can only do that in-house. You've got to work with people that have trainings, you got to develop it in-house, whatever has to be done, but you've got to do it because it's going to be probably a bigger killer than the field issues because if you can't get your bids out right, you can't manage your work correctly, and you don't have anybody to run your company, nothing else matters.

We're going to set this conversation up for another time because, as an industry, we need to start pulling together as an industry to make it affordable in these neighborhoods, to support the futures of our own companies. Business is business and people are people.

I have people job hunting on LinkedIn. They own kids out of college looking for a specific job in a specific field. I'm like, "Get the experience here. Find out where you fit into a business vest, and then now you can start focusing on what you're passionate about now that you have that background," but like a lot of us, we end up once you're in it, it's like, "Why go anywhere now?" It's the industry.

Back in the day, a guy was 18 years old and had a 16-year-old girlfriend and went to jail for it, and long ago, and he's bad rep for his whole life, the rest of his life. That doesn't make him a bad person or is not capable of doing everything else. You can't tell me that those kids in that neighborhood at Sarasota area, for instance, that the kids over in Palmetto are any less capable than the ones out in Lakewood Ranch. You have hit the nail, as they say in the industry, right on the head. We all look in the industry to either organizations, to government, to state programs to solve this trades issue. It can't happen on that level. Nothing works well on a large level, but if you, as a contractor, reach out to your local levels as you're saying, that is where it starts. You will be successful and all you have to do is have the right training and company culture in place, and they're not going to go anywhere. My regional manager started as a roof floater with Willoughby. He's the regional manager in South Florida at this point. The opportunity to grow is definitely an incentive to get people on board. They just have to know that opportunity is there.

I went and drank beers with the guys too, and I got know what drives them and what motivates them, and I'm like, "I really appreciate that." I really appreciate what that company did. They had their own products and their own product line. Like I said, even as an employer now, I think about my crews and I think about the quality of the training and the support that I get from my manufacturers, and I want them to feel like, "Hey, you know what? This is what we do. We're going to do a coating. This is what we do. Our guys are well versed in it," and that motivates people to want to be a foreman. "Oh, I know this so well. I can run a crew doing this." Well, all right, I'm going to give you that opportunity. Let's get you some advanced training.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: Open up the opportunities, inclusiveness, which is really one as... We're getting closer to the top hour, but DEI, and I want to start with SRS because SRS has been a diamond sponsor with National Motor Roofing, they've been so involved with the Roofing Alliance. Raise the Roof Foundation is just incredible. What are some of the things as an industry that you all are seeing has started changing and really been helping this topic we're talking about, inclusiveness and bringing more people and think from a DEI stance? Let's start with you, Keenan.

Keenan Perry: Yeah. This is a great segue going training into DEI because one of the groups that we've been talking about for the last, I don't know, 20 or 30 minutes here, is a group that's been so unrepresented in the industry that they've been working in for probably their entire existence within, so that would be the Latino population. Let's just go out there and say it. They have not had the resources to become knowledgeable. They have each other, but nobody's putting out the right kind of educational tools on how to grow your business for Spanish-speaking contractors. They have to figure it out themselves. It's not like we're talking about uneducated people. They just speak a different language. That's really the only barrier. Over the last couple of years, one of the things that we've done is launched our Latinos program.

We've got Julissa and Edgar who run that program, and they travel the country weekly, doing trainings at ranges out in the field with Spanish-speaking contractors. It's product training, but it's also just business training. If you happen to be in an area where they're doing that, it's all on our website. You can find that. I highly recommend going to that. It's something that's been needed and something that really hasn't ever been done by a supplier like us. I think Home Depot and Lowe's have tried it in the past, but that's talking more general contractors specific to roofers in the roofing industry. That's one thing that we've been trying to do. You've also mentioned the Raise the Roof Foundation and some of the other things that we've done, and that's one of the biggest initiatives that we've got going right now. I'm not going to make up the statistic, but it's something like 70% of Latino males are in some sort of contracting in America without any proper training, so there needs to be resources for them, and we're happy to be one of the first within our industry.

Heidi J. Ellsworth: One of the things I'm really excited about is we are working with SRS to do our lunch and learns in Spanish, and Julissa is actually hosting that. She's amazing. We are getting lunch and learns out in Spanish. We also, of course, our whole site is translated in Spanish, English, or French, and I think those are... I'm so glad you brought that up because it's so important. Such a rich part of our roofing culture is the Latino culture, and we're finally kind of going, "Okay, yeah, this is awesome. Let's make all this happen."

Keenan Perry: At the branch level, I'm not going to steal this way from you, what we are trying to do is make sure that we do have someone Spanish-speaking at the counter in the branch to be able to talk through any sort of product issues or just general questions because a lot of the times, the sub crews when they pick stuff up, in case something has forgotten on the initial order at the job site, they got to go run and pick something up, they might not know what the English word for it is. They can describe it, but definitely [inaudible 00:45:20], right? So, having someone Spanish there that's a product knowledgeable, that can be consultative in that sort of way, [inaudible 00:45:29].

Heidi J.
Mike Sheehan: To his whole point, the initiative there has definitely helped us. I can tell you from a distribution standpoint, and even these crews, when they do come in [inaudible 00:45:39] and pick up material at the branch, they will go to the distributor that they can speak to and they feel comfortable with. We have a branch in South Florida that doesn't have anyone speaking Spanish there. There's a problem. There's a problem there because you obviously don't know where your market and your target audience is here. The bigger problem is you're going to lose business over it, and it's very real. We see it all the time. Fortunately, SRS really has done a great job spearheading it. I'm actually in Spanish classes. The company sponsors Spanish classes for all employees. They pay for it. It's actually really in-depth and not a Rosetta Stone.

Keenan Perry: It's like full-time.

Mike Sheehan: Yeah, I got homework at the end of the week and everything else. Again, the class isn't cheap either, but it's part of their initiative and they're trying to stress the importance, and they're willing to pay for any employee that's willing to put in the time and effort. They've been gone as far as, we have a hotline number that if somebody does come into your branch and they don't speak English, or if it's only Spanish and nobody in the branch can communicate, then call this hotline number. I have them call them, reach out or whatever, and they'll just communicate it back to you or say, "Hey, this is what they're looking for." We've really tried to go above and beyond to really just hit that audience. Again, it is a majority of our audience, 75%.

Heidi J. It's just showing all the different things that are starting to happen that we're really seeing on that. I do want to say, a lot of times, people throw out this term, DEI, and I just want to say diversity, equitable, and inclusive, and you kind of know where we're going with that, but Sara, what are you seeing just overall with ICP, such huge company, and your initiatives?

Sara Jonas: Yeah, so internal communications falls under my umbrella as well, and so I can say that from a corporate perspective, we have a lot of diversity within our company. We have a lot of different languages within the company at all levels. We have plants all over the country, so all levels. We make sure that we offer the communications in multiple languages. The employee app is bilingual, so all of that material is translated. We also have been doing a lot, in particular recently, I would say last nine to 12 months, celebrating diversity. We've been making sure that we're highlighting, and not only celebrating, educating on some of these different cultural holidays, different traditions. I can plug to Nava, my teammate who... It's her. She's been doing a really great job with it. I mean just really great job.

When we look outward, I mean we have sales teams who are bilingual all over the country, and particularly in Tampa, so we do offer the training certifications in multiple languages, but we even just recently went through kind of an update or facelift of the APOC brand and we updated bazillion product label. It feels like it. We found labels where we didn't have simple operating instructions that were trilingual, so we've made sure to make that. That's so basic, right? But it's just a consistency thing and it's just a crossing the T and dotting the I to make sure that all of that information is available, so we've just gone through that as well. I think ICP has done a good job. We can always do better. All of us. We can always do better.

Heidi J. It's like, "Oh, we should do that. We should make that happen." You come from a very rich cultural company.

Kyle Nurminen: Yeah. I'm actually feeling I'm glad I attended and been a part of this conversation. It's considered a blessing. I just came to realize that, yes, our CEO, Jesus Lara, first worked for Richard McCuen, the original owner of Total Roofing back then, and he ended up being one of his installers. Because he was Hispanic, he had access to crews in his family and his community, that community, so we always had crews, which was very valuable even back in the '70s and '80s. Jesus is now the CEO of Dynamic Metals and Total Roofing Systems, and Richard McCuen has come out of retirement to get us back into what used to be our bread and butter, which was the commercial work and the government work and stuff, so now we're diversifying in that way, but wow, what a cool dynamic and what a great story.

We're talking about a motivation, somebody... I don't know. Jesus is kind of quiet. He's all about streamlining processes. He's an efficiency production guy, that's his passion, but he hires the right people in certain areas to be the face of that, and the business development side is... I need to bring him to the table. I think he needs to speak to some of these organizations, or we might have to put him up on a platform a little bit. I might have to call him out.

Heidi J. Now, it's here. I'm like, "We need to get Jesus to come and be in it." Yes.

Kyle Nurminen: What a success story in the human community. It can totally show how that can be done from a crew leader, to an installer, to owning, and then specialize. Oh, that's amazing. Yeah. It's a goosebumps.

Heidi J. Like I always like to tell my contractors that talk about DEI is to what my recommendation is, and I mean this in a very general, is leave your politics at the door, or politics in general at the door. The most successful companies have the most diverse teams. It's always been that way. Whenever you have a team, you never want people like you. I don't mean like you as what your nationality is. Like thinking. Best teams in the world are challenged by thoughts, and that's the best success. Now, you're correct. I'll tell you this, I am the only American that sits on the IFD Committee, voting American, and you want to talk about diversity and mix.

I mean there's 18, 20 European countries, and then there's me. We prove, by doing this all coming together, that roofing is the connector of the world. It works. It doesn't matter what your politics are or what your country. Everyone's different. Everyone has different beliefs, but we all come together for what? The common goal of improving the roofing industry. That's why I say leave politics at the door, make your team as diverse, however that may be, get unlike thinkers unlike yourself, so that you can build a better team, and you will be successful.

Heidi J. That's what we need. We need to be bringing all different types of people. We need to be bringing them into this roofing industry.

John Kenney: You are correct. Okay, last question. We're going to do this kind of quick as we go around, but I'm just bringing out your crystal ball and we want to look at what do you see are some of the things that people should just have top of mind thinking about in this coming year? For the contractors, everybody who's watching out there, what are some topic trends, threats, whatever you might see? Let's start with you, Keenan, and we'll just go around.

On the events side, because that's mostly what I handle for any contractors, come to trade shows, please. We love seeing your faces here because this is an opportunity where we can all get together and learn, talk about things. It doesn't happen that often. I think it needs to happen more. Trade shows that we've got coming up are Western states, the IRE next year. I'm trying to think of any others that we'll be at. Maybe a couple of regional ones. Then of course, everyone should tune into the Las Vegas pool on December 22nd at 12:30 Western time.

Some people are probably saying, "I don't want that storm," and then 50% saying, "Yeah, give me a storm. We can do it." For the rest of the year, that's it. Going into next year, again, it's an election year. I don't see anything getting too volatile. If anything, it's probably going to stay pretty flat or maintain where it's been at at least until there's better foresight into how that thing's going to shake out. Yeah, overall, as long as everything stays steady, I don't see anything changing in the next year in terms of business, economy. Look for some rebranding of let's say some roof adhesives and some in intentious waterproof coatings going under the APOC brand, so that brand's going to be bigger. We're now getting more advanced into our engineering and our testing on thermal barriers, on installation, on other options that diversify the metal work itself. Honestly, I agree. The economy's going to keep plugging along for a couple of reasons. One is there is so much backlog of available work in the pipelines due to major climate events around the nation due to the fact that the labor shortage is not going to go anywhere. It's not a fact of whether the work is there. It's there. It's getting it done. Okay? I think that's the biggest thing. I think the smart contractor that's going to be the most profitable is those who invest in-house training, those who invest in reaching out locally to their schools and systems area to try to get people in and work on efficiency and processes within their company, not only know their numbers, but understand what those numbers mean. You can actually make more money by doing a lot less or the same volume and not worry about growth every single year to get you where you want to be because the labor force is going to control what your actual growth is going to be.
