Intro: Hello everyone. My name is Megan Ellsworth here at rooferscoffeeshop.com and we are at The Roof Museum.

Donovan Morgan: Hey.

Megan Ellsworth: We're here with Roofs By Don.

Donovan Morgan: Raise the roof.

Megan Ellsworth: I'm so excited to be here with you.

Donovan Morgan: Me too.

Megan Ellsworth: We just did a tour of the office and the museum and the gallery and it's so fun.

Donovan Morgan: Thank you.

Megan Ellsworth: It's so fun.

Donovan Morgan: First thing first, welcome to Atlanta.

Megan Ellsworth: Yes.

Donovan Morgan: Yep. How's your trip so far?

Megan Ellsworth: So good. We're staying in Marietta, which is where your office is, where The Roof Gallery is and it's so beautiful here.

Donovan Morgan: Thank you.

Megan Ellsworth: It's amazing. So yeah, we're really enjoying it.

Donovan Morgan: Okay, good.

Megan Ellsworth: Yay.

Donovan Morgan: And we got our coffee so far, so early morning. I love the new mugs.

Megan Ellsworth: Thank you. Cheers. Yes, so good.

Donovan Morgan: We also got some donuts, thanks to Duck Donuts.

Megan Ellsworth: Yes.

Donovan Morgan: So they're based in Marietta too, the donuts is-

Megan Ellsworth: They were so good. Mine was Maple with bacon on it. So good. Okay, so Don, can you tell us a little bit about you and introduce yourself?

Donovan Morgan: Yes. So my name is Donovan Morgan, aka Roofs By Don. I'm the owner of The Roof Gallery, so roofing company. And also the founder of The Roof Museum, which is the first roof museum in the world. And it gives roofing education, classes and things like that. And we also have the first roofing hall of fame where we have a lot of people that we're inducting and just making roofing fun and making it elevated.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. And the tour, you got to show us all the different aspects of things you're teaching people, from teaching homeowners the tug pull test and seeing what shingles perform better and also the visualizer so they can see what looks best on their house. That's really cool that they can see it in person on a screen.

Donovan Morgan: Yeah. I feel like it's important to give homeowners some kind of education on what they're getting on the products, things like that. So that way it's not just a pricing, "How much can you do it for?" Now you're adding more value, they're seeing what they're getting. They know what cutting corners look like or what premium materials look like, so in that way they can make the best decision for their home.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah, it's not just good, better, best, it's being educated on the products that are going onto your home.

Donovan Morgan: Exactly. So you know what good, better, best even means.

Megan Ellsworth: Exactly. It's so true. Okay, so can you give us a quick overview on how The Roof Museum came to be? What sparked this idea?

Donovan Morgan: So me, I'm real competitive. I feel like business is just competitive in general. And growing up, initially I thought it was just basketball, music. But that's when it's real competitive too is sports, if you're like the [inaudible 00:02:47] in say, basketball or anything, you go to the hall of fame. Or same thing with music, you're the best of the best, there's the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, things like that. And once I kind of transitioned and realized that roofing was going to be my thing, I wanted to be the best of the best. And once I wanted to be the best of the best, I started looking around and who the best people were in the roofing industry space. And the first person I found was Bob the Builder.

Megan Ellsworth: I love that guy.

Donovan Morgan: And that's a cartoon. So I was like, "I got to beat him." So we started making our cartoons, we're going to beat you. And then after that I started trying to look for a lot of people and it was, there wasn't no roofing hall of fame. So that's why we have to create one. Where it's not there, you got to fill that space. And we've been blessed to induct a lot of people so far. So I haven't been inducted myself know, although that was the first idea that I wanted to be in the hall of fame.

Donovan Morgan: But now I'm blessed to be able to induct some people into the hall of fame, like TJ McCormack, The World's Greatest Roofer. He just did a great feat with social media where he's able to monetize every platform. So he gets like multi-millions of views. He has a YouTube plaque and he monetized Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, all the platforms.

Megan Ellsworth: Wow.

Donovan Morgan: So that's something that's real cool. We got John Senac, AKA John the Roof Pro. He has a special class, Name That Shingle. But he's really made a culture around discontinued shingles. So when you think about discontinued shingles, you think about him. So that's why we got him in the hall of fame. We also got Deshaun Bryan, one of my main favorites. We got Becca Switzer from Sales Mastery. She's real big as far as the industry when a lot of people get into the space, they're watching her videos to learn things like that. One of my favorites is Big Time, The Best Damn Roofer. We had to get The Best Damn Roofer on there. Because he's jersey number is 69 in real Big Time fashion. But what's real cool about him, again, when I was looking at who the best people were in the industry, I found him next and it was like The Best Damn Roofer. And what was real cool about it was one, he's like real funny. He's real eccentric. He's based out of Canada. But aside from the funny stuff, he's a marketing genius.

Megan Ellsworth: So true.

Donovan Morgan: Yeah. And how I look at sports. So the people I would look up to would be say Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Jay-Z, 50 Cent. And the reason why is the moguls, they took one thing which might be say basketball or say is music, but they transitioned in, they propelled to something-

Megan Ellsworth: Made a whole-

Donovan Morgan: ... totally different. Kind of GAF having the viewers and then now they become shingles.

Megan Ellsworth: Starting in film. Yeah.

Donovan Morgan: Yeah, exactly. It's the same kind of thing where if you can transition and with Big Time, I felt like, yeah, he's doing roofing, but now he has his own products that's in Home Depot. And for roofers you don't really have that kind of thing. So he's a real roofing rock star with that.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. We got to interview him at the Canadian Roofing Expo just a month ago and it's really cool that he works with, I believe, Primeline.

Donovan Morgan: Yeah, Primeline Tools.

Megan Ellsworth: Yes. And the tools he's designing, they're being designed by a roofer for roofers.

Donovan Morgan: That's the best part. So just like when you have Michael Jordan and then you have, so he plays on the Bulls, but you have Jordans. And then people wear the basketball sneakers. It's like the same thing. He has the products and it's his products. And they sponsor The Roof Museum too, so we have the Primeline Tools. So whether's the ripper, he signed it too.

Megan Ellsworth: Oh, cool.

Donovan Morgan: Yeah, where we have, they got the pads, like the pads you can see in the back.

Megan Ellsworth: Oh, yes.

Donovan Morgan: And they got a lot of other cool tools that they use. But yeah, they're definitely doing big time.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. Amazing.

Donovan Morgan: Yep.

Megan Ellsworth: Okay. So we kind of touched on some of them, but what are some of the prime exhibits here in the museum? Maybe like your favorite?

Donovan Morgan: Yeah, so some of my favorite is, I definitely like the tug test.

Megan Ellsworth: Yes, that's fun.

Donovan Morgan: So usually they call it the pull test. We call it the tug test to brand it at The Roof Museum. And that started at conferences, seeing some people do the tug test. And I like to think I'm one of the first to bring it to actual where the public can actually use it, where we got one made just for where we do events, things like that. And I feel like that's played a big part where people can be more interactive and they can actually feel, see the differences. So it touches more of the senses. So I feel like that's real good. And then you get to put on the white gloves. I also like the golden door, just because it's something different, again, it's something that can be interactive. So especially when we're doing events, then they can go on, they can practice, you hear their pitch. But you're doing it on a real door, so it's more real time. Even how they knock on the door, "You sound like the police. Knock a little softer." Things like that.

Megan Ellsworth: "A little loud."

Donovan Morgan: Yeah. And I would say the roof on the wall. Because it's one of the best just representations of what's going to happen. So it's one thing to tell people what you're going to do, but when you're able to actually show them, then I feel like that's always better.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. And what a great resource that is too. For also being a roofing contractor and having homeowners come in here, you can explain X, Y, Z of what the roof is looking like underneath hundred shingles.

Donovan Morgan: 100%. And you're able to add more value that way. So for contractors, if you're in the Georgia area, you guys can feel free to use The Roof Museum as well.

Megan Ellsworth: Awesome.

Donovan Morgan: It's something for the roofing industry, so it's just another tool. So yeah, so you guys can bring people and we can help with the VIP tours for you guys.

Megan Ellsworth: That's awesome. So if you're an art club member and you live in the Georgia area, maybe we'll get you hooked up with Don.

Donovan Morgan: Exactly.

Megan Ellsworth: You can come get a VIP tour.

Donovan Morgan: There you go.

Megan Ellsworth: Amazing. Okay. So how would you say roofing has evolved over the decades?

Donovan Morgan: I think it's evolved well. I can't say decades.

Megan Ellsworth: Right.

Donovan Morgan: I've been around for three of them. But as far as in roofing, since I've been in it, I've been in for say six years now, I'd say, which is a long time. Time is kind of flying.

Megan Ellsworth: Almost a decade.

Donovan Morgan: Yeah. Right? Yeah. Time is flying. Technology. I would say before when I just came in, it was like during COVID. And I remember when I was just coming in, a lot of roofers as far as on the sales side, because I started at sales, they would be like, "Hey, we're only going to go out after 5:00 PM because that's when everyone gets home from work." And that was the magic hour from 5:00 to sundown. And then as soon as I came in, it was like COVID. So I didn't know any different and I was coming from a sales background, so I was outside 11 O'clock starting, but it worked in my favor because everyone is home because of COVID.

Megan Ellsworth: Oh, yeah.

Donovan Morgan: So everyone's working from home now and everyone's paying more attention to their house because they're there. So when I started, I started in August and that winter I remember was one of the biggest winters I had for the company I just started with. So they started from 1.2 million and I brought them to 10.4 million in one year.

Megan Ellsworth: Damn.

Donovan Morgan: Yeah. And it was just me just going in and I was recruiting a lot of people at the time too. I recruited over 50 people in six months.

Megan Ellsworth: Wow.

Donovan Morgan: Yeah. And that was really my story as far as beginning roofing. But with that, I think I see the patterns as far as how sales is, I feel like it's a little bit different. More salespeople are actually doing roofing than roofers doing roofing. Does that make sense?

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah, no, that does make sense.

Donovan Morgan: Okay, yeah. So usually a lot of, it was more of roofers. My dad was a roofer and things like that. And now it's kind of roofing is just a product. "I can sell anything." And then it's like that now.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah.

Donovan Morgan: So it's a little bit different as far as that technology from drones. Drones wasn't a thing at first.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah.

Donovan Morgan: Now people don't climb as much anymore as more, there's more drones on the satellites from the measurement reports, for instance. So I feel like just making things more easy.

Megan Ellsworth: And safer.

Donovan Morgan: And safer. 100%.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. And cool tools. You mentioned the Ridge Pro and you have the step-up thing.

Donovan Morgan: The Pitch Hopper, yeah.

Megan Ellsworth: Pitch Hopper and products from companies like The Catch-All, all out there to make the lives of roofers easier and also safer.

Donovan Morgan: 100%. And there's new products that's coming out so often now when you go to the conferences like IRE, you always see them. And I feel like is real good, because again, roofing is one of the most dangerous businesses or industries in the United States, if not the world. And we need to be more cautious of our lives so everyone can get home safely to their families.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. I couldn't agree more. So have you had any younger generations engaging with The Roof Museum?

Donovan Morgan: That's a great question.

Megan Ellsworth: And engaging just with roofing in general, bringing kids into the trades.

Donovan Morgan: Yeah, that's an awesome question. I'm glad you asked that. Yeah, I feel like that's one of the things that I see value in and makes me happy with The Roof Museum thing, because I never thought I'd have a museum in the first place. I feel like that's something that's kind of, I'm creative, so I do music and stuff, so I guess that's just more on my creative side, the museum thing. But with the kids, that was one of my things because when you grow up, no one wants to be a roofer. You think the old guy, construction boots dirty. You don't really think about, this is my fun job, this is what I'm going to do. It's usually sports, music, what looks fun,

Megan Ellsworth: I want to be a princess.

Donovan Morgan: Yeah. Or I remember when I was a kid, I wanted to be a firefighter. I wanted to be a firefighter. So people who want to be police officers or firefighters, but you never hear someone say they want to be a roofer. So I wanted to change that. So we do a lot of cool things with the community, which I think is real big. A lot is sponsored by the Home Depot Kids Workshop. So shout out to Home Depot.

Megan Ellsworth: Oh, that's awesome.

Donovan Morgan: So we have a lot of community events that we do. It's like bi-monthly. And the next one that's coming up is our third annual Roofer Block Party. So it's a block party, we're doing it in the back.

Megan Ellsworth: Okay.

Donovan Morgan: Usually we average about, at first it started slow. So first it was like 50 people.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah.

Donovan Morgan: The last one we had 300 people there. This one we're expecting to have 500 or more, so it'd be great. Usually bounce houses, we have the Kids Home Depot Workshop, so the kids are all out there and at the end of it they say, "I want to be a roofer." So I feel like that's real cool.

Megan Ellsworth: I love it.

Donovan Morgan: So Bob the builder, we're coming for you.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. We're so coming for you. That is so powerful. And to see it grow so much too.

Donovan Morgan: Yeah. And then also with Construction Ready and SkillsUSA.

Megan Ellsworth: Oh, yes.

Donovan Morgan: Yeah. So I know that you guys do some things with them too. So with Construction Ready and skills ready and SkillsUSA, they have, what is it like? It's like so in sports, let's say track, when you're in high school and stuff, you go to regionals, then you go to states-

Megan Ellsworth: National.

Donovan Morgan: Yeah. So it's the same thing where in the construction space, they go into regionals. And the last one was held at the Georgia World Congress Center. And that was real big and we were one of the only roofers for the residential to represent that for the kids.

Megan Ellsworth: Oh, cool.

Donovan Morgan: Yes. And they do contests and stuff. And then they had one another roofing company to represent the commercial side. So we get to give an impression on the kids as well. And I believe that's like middle school, high school, just getting into the field

Megan Ellsworth: I think it's like sixth grade through 12th grade.

Donovan Morgan: Yeah. And then we're talking to having them to do some more events with us too as far as for education.

Megan Ellsworth: That's incredible. Yeah. SkillsUSA is so cool.

Donovan Morgan: They are.

Megan Ellsworth: And I know that the Georgia Chapter is pretty active too.

Donovan Morgan: Yeah, they are.

Megan Ellsworth: Right. That's awesome.

Donovan Morgan: Yeah.

Megan Ellsworth: So what are some common misconceptions maybe about roofing and also about The Roof Museum if people haven't been here that you want to address or correct?

Donovan Morgan: As far as for roofing in general, misconception? I think the most common misconception I would say is, initially them thinking roofing is a dream killer. Roofing is not a dream killer, it's a dream facilitator. So at the end of the day, whatever you want to do or you want to be, if you didn't wake up and say, "Hey, I want to be a roofer. Roofs By Don wasn't there yet, so your kids won't say that.

Megan Ellsworth: We'll allow it.

Donovan Morgan: But as far as, this is supposed to be something where it can help you, one, gain financial freedom, so then you can do what you want to do. So for instance, I like music, so that's why I was able to make songs every single day and those kinds of things we'll do for fun, but I can make a music video on it and things like that because roofing is helping me facilitate what I like to do. A lot of times too, when you're trying to start something like what you really want to do or passionate about, it costs money. And then when it costs money, you have to do things that you don't necessarily like to do. A lot of times you get put in a position where you can't necessarily get out of it, so now you're really stuck on doing something else so you never get to go to your dream. But I feel like with roofing, it's something that you can get into, you can learn.

Donovan Morgan: You don't have to necessarily go to school for and do those four years and pay. You can start, you get training, you can get paid while you're training and at the end of the day, you can have a real career, you can learn a real trade, you can make real money, especially if you're dedicated to it, you can make six figures and that's from a hundred thousand to 999,000, somewhere in between there. And that can help facilitate whether if you want to be a real estate guru, if you wanted to be the next tomato soup, if you wanted to do whatever, now you can have the money to be able to back yourself. And I feel like that's the main thing.

Megan Ellsworth: I love that. I love that perspective because I couldn't agree more. I have a similar experience and it's such a great trade to get into. Also, if you're a young kid watching this, you don't feel like going to college. What a safe trade. Well, it's safer than it was to get into just because of the people, the community.

Donovan Morgan: 100%.

Megan Ellsworth: It's a great industry to be a part of. So.

Donovan Morgan: I also think... This I would tell 18 and up as far as teenagers, you're getting into the workforce and a lot of times you don't know what to do. So especially in my community, you don't know what to do at first. You're like, "What am I going to do?" And then again, I said it maybe two times so far in the conversation, you always think about music or sports and that's the only thing to be a millionaire or multimillionaire really be successful where we see a success. And you don't know what else at first. And then sometimes even when you go to school, you might go to school, but you don't know if you really want to do that profession or that major.

Donovan Morgan: So I feel like with roofing, it's a trade where it's like, "Hey, I don't know what I'm doing yet. I'm 18, 19, 22, whatever the age is and I want to get into something, but I want to make real money." As opposed to, I don't want to say a place and in turn and make them sound bad, but as opposed to working somewhere lower where, at the end of the day, you're going to make under a hundred thousand dollars a week, you can get into a trading that you can make $5,000 in a week as far as with roofing. And you can imagine you at 19 making $5,000 a week.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah, crazy.

Donovan Morgan: You're the most lit 19-year-old ever. You're the person that everybody's going to.

Megan Ellsworth: You're set.

Donovan Morgan: So that's why roofing is a good trade, something to actually learn. Now you're learning something as opposed to, I didn't say I was going to say a place working at Walmart, for instance. And Walmart might be a good place, but this is a real trade that you can learn and it can really benefit you.

Megan Ellsworth: And take that skill elsewhere.

Donovan Morgan: Exactly. It's a transferable skill too. So that's something's very good.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah and I love that you said earlier too, that you're competitive and that's what took you to sales. So if you are like an athlete or a musician, you have that competitive spirit, especially being in sales. Yeah.

Donovan Morgan: Especially. Yeah. Actually with us, one of the things that we look for salespeople is if you're an athlete. If you're not, then you're kind of like, "Eh." Because we're competitive and we want you to be able to keep up with the team. And when you're an athlete, you're more team-orientated, more goal-orientated. Like I said, "Hey, I want to be in the hall of fame. I want to be the best of the best." So you want people to want to compete with you like that.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah, exactly.

Donovan Morgan: Keep pushing each other.

Megan Ellsworth: Exactly. Okay. So let's talk about the educational side of the museum.

Donovan Morgan: Yes.

Megan Ellsworth: Do you partner with any schools or apprenticeship programs besides the one we've already talked about?

Donovan Morgan: That's a great question. So we partner with CobbWorks right now. So Cobb, that's like the county-

Megan Ellsworth: Awesome.

Donovan Morgan: ... in Georgia. And we have some cool things going on with them. We've partnered with them for a few months now actually. And we have some cool things coming. They came to one prior event. We also are in the works with some cities right now.

Megan Ellsworth: Awesome.

Donovan Morgan: The city of, well, some cities in Georgia, the city of Mableton, Marietta, things like that, Atlanta and some other cities where we're going to be focused on some more education stuff with the students and things like that.

Megan Ellsworth: Love.

Donovan Morgan: So we're trying to make it more official. For me, like you said, this is the first roofing museum in the world, so this is the first museum for me, period. So we're still doing our learning curve too. We're two years in. So I think that it's real cool as far as learning too and seeing the stuff that we can do. So even having the conversations with the city now, having the mayors come in and talking to city councilmen and going in the town meetings and then you're there and they're talking about you. I feel like all that is new to me, but it's stuff that's real cool.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah, that's huge.

Donovan Morgan: Yeah, it's cool.

Megan Ellsworth: That's really cool. Yeah, meeting the mayor.

Donovan Morgan: Yeah.

Megan Ellsworth: I wonder when you're going to get the key to the city?

Donovan Morgan: It's coming. It's coming.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah.

Donovan Morgan: We're going to have Roofing Day, Roofs By Don Day.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah, I love it.

Donovan Morgan: We're going to write this down.

Megan Ellsworth: Write that down.

Donovan Morgan: Yeah. So I feel like those kinds of stuff is real cool that is happening. And at the end of the day, as far as with roofing or anything that I'm in, I want to be able to leave a legacy, something. And I feel like this could be one of the things that's a nice little stamp in time where we can help other people leave their legacies and again, providing education and something to an industry that's as long as time, but doesn't seem like as talked about or as fun or as say sexy, I'd say. So we're making it a little bit more, a little more cool.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. Okay. So I would love to know how do you choose what is in the museum? And do you have any upcoming additions to the museum?

Donovan Morgan: Yeah. Okay. So as far as upcoming additions, I add that one first. So yeah, we just had the CertainTeed wall. We're one of the newest ones. And I feel like that was real big because we want to represent everyone. We don't want to look like, oh, I think you asked that before too. We don't want to look like... There's a difference between The Roof Gallery and The Roof Museum.

Megan Ellsworth: Yes.

Donovan Morgan: So the misconception is a lot of times when they look at The Roof Museum sometimes where it's vendors or exhibitors, they're looking at it to get to the Roofs by Don of The Roof Gallery. So they're like, "Yeah, I want to be an exhibitor. Yeah. Can we be your vendor for roof gallery or can we sell you shingles?" And at the end of the day with The Roof Museum, it's education for contractors and homeowners, but we're not selling anything. So just like when you go to a regular museum and you see the Mona Lisa, you get education, but you can't buy the Mona Lisa.

Megan Ellsworth: We all wish.

Donovan Morgan: Exactly. But if you go to an art gallery, you can buy everything in the art gallery. Right?

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. So true.

Donovan Morgan: That's like the gift shop. Right?

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah, got it.

Donovan Morgan: So The Roof Gallery is the gift shop where you can buy a roof, you can buy shingles, that's The Roof Gallery. And then The Roof Museum is just education where you get to see the work of art, you get to get educated and get insight on roofing in the industry. And then as far as for newer exhibits, we have one of our newer exhibitors is JobNimbus. So JobNimbus, welcome aboard. Aye.

Megan Ellsworth: Yay.

Donovan Morgan: So their exhibit is going to be in the building soon. Theirs is getting made right now.

Megan Ellsworth: Very cool.

Donovan Morgan: How do they get picked to be inside The Roof Museum?

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah.

Donovan Morgan: I feel like first, I wanted to make it as authentic as possible. So it's like a mixture, so with The Roof Museum, what I was looking at as far as who's the competition to say, The Roof Museum? And really the first people I thought of was conferences.

Megan Ellsworth: Okay.

Donovan Morgan: So say IRE, all the conferences and there are their booths and the vendor booth and things like that. And I wanted to first use the ones that I actually work with. So not just anyone but ones that actually make sense. So I felt like the Ridge Pro, I literally use that to make sure that I'm alive on the roof.

Megan Ellsworth: Right.

Donovan Morgan: So I really feel like he should get inducted as far as the people who are the best of the best. So that's how I feel like they should get picked. So whether it's say IKO, they're a major manufacturer. GAF. So we have the GAF roof and wall. They're a major manufacturer. CertainTeed, they're major. So the majors, they all have to be here, whether they're competitors or not, whether I use all of them on one roof or I just use one, they're the best of the best as far as industries. It's like Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson, LeBron James, they're all in the hall of fame. So they all got to be here. Same thing with, we have AccuLynx, but we also have JobNimbus.

Megan Ellsworth: Yes.

Donovan Morgan: So they're two CRMs, but they're both hall of famers because they're both do great things in the industry.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah, I love it.

Donovan Morgan: Yeah. So things like that. We have the Ridge Pro, we said that. We have the Lock Jaw Ladder grip. I feel like HailTrace was one that was real big that needed to be here, because in the roofing space, we always have to get reports as far as for storms.

Megan Ellsworth: Exactly.

Donovan Morgan: And a lot of roofs get replaced due to storm damage. So I feel like HailTrace was a big one that needed to be in here for representation. And we have so many, I don't want to miss anybody in particular. But Pitch Gauge, I felt like one. We needed a measurement company in general.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. Represented.

Donovan Morgan: We needed one in general. And I felt like with the Pitch Gauge, I could have EagleView just thinking as far as museum wise, but I felt like as far as growing and what they had to offer, I just felt like it was a better addition. And then also with Abraham Ventura, we've met in Orlando in Florida at RoofCON and he's based in Atlanta too, which I found out after.

Megan Ellsworth: Oh, okay.

Donovan Morgan: And the things that he has going on, he's real innovative, he's real smart. So they have a lot of things that's going to be coming up. And then again, with theirs, it was like $10 to $15 a measurement report. And other ones are $30 to $60. So I felt like it was like common sense, a no-brainer. So when I feel like that, I feel like I need to put it on display and everyone needs to see it.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah.

Donovan Morgan: And then that's really, as far as for the museum, it is just really highlighting the best of the best where everyone can see the differences. And then for homeowners to make it in a way where it's interactive and fun. So with The Roof Museum, we like to attract all five senses. So when you come in, whether you get water sparkling or still or coffee, so that's attracting your taste. Whether you get to see all of the artwork and the visual representations, that's your site right there. When we pull the shingles, with the tug test we handle everything's like with care, but you get to feel it. Even our music. So you get to hear the roofing songs, "Getting Paid." So we have the way you get to hear it as well. And I'm not sure if I'm missing any.

Megan Ellsworth: Smell?

Donovan Morgan: Smell. And then when you come in, hopefully it smells good when you're ready to come in. Good.

Megan Ellsworth: Maybe you can sniff a shingle.

Donovan Morgan: Yeah, you got a sense? Scratch and sniff. But yeah. And that way, again, attracting all the senses, because that helps with the experience and making roofing, again, an experience so it adds value and not just like, "What's the price?" And it's getting it done. Just a construction zone, but more making homeowners, again, feel like Mr. And Mrs. [inaudible 00:28:16] TV. Like they're doing, making their house a model home again and getting that kind of experience.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. Because that's a great feeling. And feeling like you're putting time and effort into your house is very rewarding once it's all done.

Donovan Morgan: 100%.

Megan Ellsworth: So I would love for you to think about what role do you think places like The Roof Museum play in shaping the future of our industry?

Donovan Morgan: I think it plays a huge role because it helps with, I think what we're doing right now with this era in roofing, we're helping create roofing culture. So I feel like roofing had culture, but we're adding a little more spice to it.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. Zest.

Donovan Morgan: Yeah. Give it a little more season as far as for roofing, where we're making it little more cool. So with The Roof Museum for instance, again, this is I guess the first space, we're providing education to the public in a fun, interactive way. Where we can do community events and things like that and roofing is on the forefront. Even with the conferences, even just what you guys do as far as the Roofers Coffee Shop and having these resources and things like that. So I feel like adding culture, I feel like that's the biggest thing that we're adding. So even with social media that's going on with roofing now, they can, even the songs, they can put that in the back of their social media songs and stuff like that. It's just making it fun, so people can say or little kids, they can say, "I want to be a police officer. I want to be a firefighter. I want to be a roofer."

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. That's so true. And congratulations on the space-

Donovan Morgan: Thank you.

Megan Ellsworth: ... and having all the exhibits and the vendors that you work with, it's just, it's great. It's a real, it' as feat. So

Donovan Morgan: Yeah, we have over 30 vendors in the building exhibitors and they all help play a major role, even with the business 411, how we get the magnifying glass.

Megan Ellsworth: You got me on that one.

Yeah. And even with Lego and people wouldn't think you guys are doing stuff with Lego or you guys sponsored Atlanta Hawks or you guys do commercials and things like that with IKO, things like that. And I think it's cool when we're able to align with major companies because one of our visions is to be a household name in the roofing industry or in the industry in general through experiences and innovation. And I feel like, because I don't feel like Roofing really has a household name. And that's why I feel like one of The Roof Museum is so important. And that's why we're working on that as far as our goals.

Donovan Morgan: Because a lot of times when you think of any kind of industry, there's a household name you could think of and roofing has been around for so long, but there's no like, "Hey, see roofers. Those are those guys." In Georgia, they kind of will give one company credit. But since I've been in Georgia, I'm from Florida originally, but since I've been in Georgia, they say Roof Roof. And that is one of the companies, the competition. But it is like Roof Roof. They've been around forever, before I was even born. They said they were in the Yellow Pages.

Megan Ellsworth: Oh, yeah.

Donovan Morgan: But at the end of the day, people out here, they're like, you say, "Hey, roof company." They be like "Yeah, Roof Roof company?" So that's kind of cool. But other than that and on a national level, I never really hear. So I feel like with this we're able to again, add more eyeballs on roofing. So then hopefully us, but then or maybe we can inspire the next person to be a household name in the roofing industry.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. That's amazing. Okay. I'd love to end with, what do you want every visitor to The Roof Museum, The Roof Gallery, to take away from their visit?

Donovan Morgan: I want them to say, "This was so cool. I never thought that roofing would be like this." That's what they usually... And yeah, I want them at the end of the day when they think about roofs that they think about me. So I want them to tell their kids that Roots By Don made up raise the roof. Hey. And that's it. When they think about roofs, that they think about me.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. I love it. Well, I definitely think about you.

Donovan Morgan: Aye.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah.

Donovan Morgan: What's real cool too, songs. So with songs, they all... I pay attention to a lot of details, so they get a lot of remixes. So it's like all the old songs, they get remixed and now it's new. And even what I realized is the songs that I used to hear too were remixed from songs from the 80s and even Raise the Roof. So when they think about Raise the Roof, who made that up? Do you actually know?

Megan Ellsworth: No.

Donovan Morgan: Nobody knows who made... I don't know who made up Raise the Roof. So that's why Roofs By Don made up Raise the Roof. So hey kid, this is the remix for 2025. And get everyone again, just part of culture. So that way we could be a household name, we can make roofing fun every. So when you have your kids, they could be like, "Hey, I want to be like you. I want to be a roofer." Or "I want to be like that guy." That's really it.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. Well, congratulations. I think you're on your way.

Donovan Morgan: Yay.

Megan Ellsworth: And thank you so much for chatting with me today.

Donovan Morgan: Thank you.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. And thanks for having us. It's amazing. We love sponsoring the kitchen.

Donovan Morgan: Yes, yes, yes. The Roofers Coffee Shop.

Megan Ellsworth: The Roofers Coffee Shop. My bad. And before we go, I'd love for you... We have a little gift.

Donovan Morgan: Oh.

Megan Ellsworth: A little... It's hiding.

Donovan Morgan: Yay. Okay.

Megan Ellsworth: Next to you. We have a little gift for you to open.

Donovan Morgan: Do you know red is my favorite color too, right?

Megan Ellsworth: Well, it's coffee shop red.

Donovan Morgan: Perfect. Yeah. I love it.

Megan Ellsworth: So there you go.

Donovan Morgan: I'm excited.

Megan Ellsworth: All right. Drum roll

Donovan Morgan: This is the undoing. Hey. What did I get?

Megan Ellsworth: You got so much coffee.

Donovan Morgan: Aye. In the coffee shop.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah.

Donovan Morgan: This is real cool. Wait, so this is the actual, the coffee beans?

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah.

Donovan Morgan: So how do I... Do I have to get a grinder?

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. Or is it ground already?

Speaker 3: It's ground.

Donovan Morgan: Is it ground already?

Megan Ellsworth: Oh, it's actual ground.

Donovan Morgan: Let's see.

Megan Ellsworth: Oh, it's ground.

Donovan Morgan: It's ground already. Aye.

Megan Ellsworth: Heck yeah.

Donovan Morgan: Official.

Megan Ellsworth: Incredible.

Donovan Morgan: This is actually real cool.

Megan Ellsworth: Yay.

Donovan Morgan: So in our office people are like coffee connoisseurs. Yep. So we're definitely going to be trying... And are there different flavors? What do we have in here.

Megan Ellsworth: I think they're all the same.

Donovan Morgan: That's real cool.

Megan Ellsworth: We just gave you so much.

Donovan Morgan: We got the medium dark roast. It matches me.

Megan Ellsworth: Yes. And then there's one more thing right there for you.

Donovan Morgan: Ooh, let's see what we got.

Megan Ellsworth: Pull that bad boy out.

Donovan Morgan: I got to see it too. I love it. Hey, we know where this is going, right?

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah.

Donovan Morgan: This is official.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah.

Donovan Morgan: This is super cool. So what are we going to do at the end of the tour since it ends in the Roofers Coffee Shop?

Megan Ellsworth: Yes.

Donovan Morgan: As soon as they get in, they get the, "Thank you for visiting."

Megan Ellsworth: "Thank you for visiting."

Donovan Morgan: And we're going to make sure everyone logs in too.

Megan Ellsworth: Yay. Well done. Thank you so much.

Donovan Morgan: This is awesome.

Megan Ellsworth: And we're so glad to be in partnership with you.

Donovan Morgan: No, thank you guys so much. I'm super appreciative as far as for the partnership.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah.

Donovan Morgan: I look up to you guys too, as far as-

Megan Ellsworth: Oh, we look up to you.

Donovan Morgan: So no, but really though, for how long you guys have been doing it, that's a family business.

Donovan Morgan: I think that's real cool. We see you guys at all of the... You guys are everywhere.

How does it fare when the summer sun scorches as fiercely as the winter winds chill? Such questions are not only expected but encouraged, as they lead to prudent decisions. In the forthcoming sections, we will delve deeper into the attributes of Euroshake roofing that give it an edge in a diverse climate. And to answer the looming questions, yes, Euroshake roofing is meticulously crafted to shelter you across seasons, under sun or storm, with an unwavering commitment to excellence.

Understanding the durability of Euroshake roofing

A key concern for homeowners is the longevity of their roofing investment. Euroshake roofing boasts an impressive lifespan, outliving many conventional roofing materials by years — an attribute not lost on those wise to the vagaries of weather here. This durability stems from the high-quality materials used in Euroshake construction, ensuring that the roof not only withstands daily exposures but also extraordinary weather events with ease. It’s not just about how long the roof lasts, but how well it performs during its tenure — a roof that lessens the worry of frequent replacements is a roof worth having. With Euroshake, the promise of resilience is more than just words; it’s a proven track record of performance and customer satisfaction.

Euroshake’s value proposition extends beyond mere longevity; it also encompasses efficiency in energy use. The makeup of Euroshake roofing is such that it reflects UV rays, instrumental in keeping homes cooler during warm summers, leading to a potential reduction in air conditioning expenses. Cost-effectiveness is further seen in the winter months when the same properties contribute to better heat retention, lessening the burden on heating systems. Such energy-saving properties are a testament to the clever design of Euroshake roofing, marrying practicality with ecological consideration. Prospective buyers interested in exploring the full spectrum of residential roofing services can easily gauge the nuanced benefits that Euroshake provides.

Adopting Euroshake is not merely a financial calculation; it’s about convenience and peace of the mind that comes with low maintenance. Free of the frequent care requirements that other materials often demand, it spares homeowners the headache of constant upkeep. A simple, occasional check to clear away debris or leaves suffices, a task that is hardly strenuous, yet goes a long way in preserving the roof’s condition. This ease of maintenance is especially appreciated by busy homeowners, who value simplicity and effectiveness. Euroshake roofing stands for quality that doesn’t demand your constant attention, leaving you more time to enjoy the home it so reliably protects.

Aesthetic appeal paired with unmatched functionality makes Euroshake the smart choice for homeowners who plan for the long game. It reflects a dedication to home and hearth, creating a sanctuary impervious to the fickle Georgia climate.
Homing in on this point, the trust engendered by Euroshake’s protective qualities is unmatched. It carries with it an assurance that has been cemented by years of dependable service and countless satisfied customers. Advanced energy efficiency is another cornerstone feature, reflecting growing environmental consciousness and desire for sustainable living solutions. When you extend your vision of home to include both impact and innovation, Euroshake roofing becomes a clear contender.

Megan Ellsworth: Hello everyone, my name is Megan Ellsworth and you are listening to a Roofing Road Trip podcast from RoofersCoffeeshop.com. I am here today with one of our very good friends, Donovan Morgan. Hello, how are you?

Donovan Morgan: Everything is going great. How you guys doing? Raise the roof. Hey.

Megan Ellsworth: Raise the roof. I'm so good. I'm even better now. I'm excited to chat. You guys are doing your third annual Black History Month Summit hosted at the Roof Museum. And we're talking about that today. So before we dive into that, can you just introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about you, the Roof Museum and Roofs by Don.

Donovan Morgan: Yes.

Donovan Morgan: Of course, of course. So, hey guys, my name is Donovan Morgan, aka Roots by Don. I own a company called The Roof Gallery by Roots by Don, and also the nonprofit, which is The Roof Museum, which is the first roof museum in the world. And basically, we, with The Roof Gallery and Roots by Don is based out of Atlanta, Georgia, Marietta B. is specific. I started my roofing company three years ago. From starting my roofing company, we've been doing, a lot of great things as far as in the industry, where I've gotten one of the first endorsements from a shingle manufacturer. Ours is with Ica, so like LeBron James and Nike, you know, have roofers, you know, getting endorsements now as well. We've done a lot of education as far as in the roofing industry through our roof museum, where we educate contractors, we show the culture, we make roofing fun, you know and we do a lot of things for the community and for the kids.

So then that way when they grow up, they don't have to say they wanna be a police or a fireman. Now they can have another thing on the list and they can wanna be a roofer as well.

Megan Ellsworth: Yes, I love it. You guys really do make roofing fun. I just love seeing everything you guys do. And when you're at the trade shows, you just have this brilliant energy about you. So it's always just really fun. So thanks for everything you do.

Donovan Morgan: Thank you, thank you.

Donovan Morgan: I appreciate that, appreciate that. And thank you. And we also have our theme song for the roofing industry called Every Shingle Day. So you guys can go on there. Just put in a ruse by Don and we have a lot of different roofing songs for the roofing industry too.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah!

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah, and they're bangers, honestly. They're so good. Yes. Okay, can you tell us a little bit about the Roof Museum and its mission in the roofing and construction industries?

Donovan Morgan: Thank you, thank you.

Donovan Morgan: Yeah, so the Roof Museum has been around, I guess, about to be three years officially too, because this is going to be the Black History Month event that we're going to be doing in February. And what the main thing was is me, very competitive. I like to be the best of the best. So usually when you're doing like music or you're an athlete, you're in the Hall of Fame. And you know, you're in the Hall of Fame Museum or things like that. And at the end of the day, when I was looking into roofing,

Megan Ellsworth: Okay.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah.

Roofs By Don: And I said, finally, okay, I'm gonna be a roofer, this is what I'm gonna do. I was looking for who the best of the best are. And I couldn't find that necessarily when I was looking. The biggest person I found was Bob the Builder. I'm like, hold on, you that's a cartoon. Yeah, so we had to start trying to see what I thought the best roofer would look like. So that's why we just started doing cool things as far as branding. No company really had a household name. So we started branding ourselves.

Megan Ellsworth: Wait a minute.

Donovan Morgan: Put a cartoon so that I could go against Barb Builder as far as things like that. Do things for the community, for kids, because that's who's growing up. I feel like if the kids know who you are as a brand, when they get older, that's what they're gonna know as far as roofing wise. that's where the Roof Museum actually came from first because we felt like I wanted to find out who the best of the best were in the roofing space. And that I wanted to be the one to induct them into the Hall of Fame since it wasn't there yet. So they usually say when things...

Can't get done right you have to do it yourself. So I didn't see it So I decided hey, let's let's make one. Let's make the roof museum and I can start Inducting people into the roof museum that has provided excellence to our industry

Megan Ellsworth: That's awesome. I just love that you all are so motivated by empowering kids. Because, I mean, everybody needs a roof. Everybody needs a sink. There's all these different trades that have been kind of overlooked the last few decades. you guys are just bringing a new life to them, especially for kids and teenagers. That's really cool to see.

Donovan Morgan: Yeah. And I really feel like, just like we saying earlier, when you think of roofing or construction in general, it's not necessarily the sexiest industry. You usually think of the old guy, dirty, construction boots. But really, with roofing, construction, any business, you can add your own personality to it. So you can be yourself and add your individuality to it. So that's why we like to do cool things. We feel like we're cool.

Megan Ellsworth: Right.

Donovan Morgan: So whether it's music, whether it's community events, getting people together, education, but just doing things in a fun way, repackaging it in a way where it's digestible for everyone in the new generations.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah, that's great. Okay, so this is the third year that you've done your Black History Month Summit. How has it evolved and what was the inspiration behind it?

Donovan Morgan: Yes.

Donovan Morgan: I feel like it's definitely, you guys were the inspiration behind it. So shout out to Rupert's coffee shop. Yep, so know coffee, know, you get it black first and then you have the creamer. So, with this Black History Month is coffee, no creamer. No, but yeah, so really you guys, cause you guys had your Black History Month podcast.

Megan Ellsworth: My gosh!

Megan Ellsworth: Perfect, perfect, just the way I like it.

Megan Ellsworth: Webinar. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Donovan Morgan: Yes, you guys have a bunch of podcasts. So you guys are actually one up from us. This might be like your fourth one in like for the fourth annual one that you guys have. Yeah. And I saw you guys do the first one. I thought that was real cool because when I was looking in the roofing industry, I felt like that was under, what's the word? As far as being able to be seen with everyone, underrepresented there is I'll short for rest for a second. So, know,

Megan Ellsworth: Think so, yeah.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah, underrepresented. Yep.

Donovan Morgan: With the roofing, especially like the Latinos, they have Latinos roofing, have things like that. And as far as the manufacturers, they'll even do events that are geared towards other, you know, communities. So I feel like the, it's a squeaky wheel that gets the oil. So at the end of the day, we have to be able to let them know, hey, there's black people that's in the industry as well. You know, we're just black owners or different parts of the industry. And that's how we're able to get more support. So just by making a platform.

Megan Ellsworth: Yep.

Megan Ellsworth: Exactly.

Donovan Morgan: I feel like that's the first thing that we gotta do. And then, know, everybody else will come support and people will be able to see as far as the industry that, you know, when I just started, I didn't know that black people even roofed. Is I had to start, am I getting on social media? Then I saw another black owner and then he was in a totally different state. He was in Texas and relocated into Georgia, you know? But then just because of social media, we're able to start networking and then you start seeing, oh, there's other black people that do this as well, you know? And with the Black History Month events, it's kind of, getting everyone in one place so that when everyone can network, because your network is your network.

Megan Ellsworth: Yes, I love that saying. That is so true. It really is your net worth. Wow, that's brilliant. I just, couldn't agree more. Like you said, going back to the kids too, like having someone that looks like you and is maybe from your area or just looks like you, doing something that you want to do or being a person that you want to be like is huge. And it's so inspirational for people growing up.

Donovan Morgan: Mm-hmm.

Megan Ellsworth: So, and also I, there are black people in the roofing industry. so, you'd never know, yeah.

Donovan Morgan: I know, but you would never know. I really didn't know. And even me being, like this is real, even me being black, I didn't know until I went to conferences and stuff. And really people coming up to me like, I didn't know there was other black people until I saw you. And I'm like, well, we're not together, you know? And yeah, and at the end of the day, I feel like once you realize that, then everyone can kind of get together and actually out. Because again, just like we're saying, as far as networks wise,

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah, that's awesome.

Donovan Morgan: There might be a project that is too big for me or maybe I can't handle, but now because I have a better network, you I can reach out, you know, I can see if that could, if someone can help me facilitate it or if I can pass it off to them, you know, it's just expanding your network, seeing people just like you said, like-minded that look like you because I've never seen, like I said, picture the old guy, construction boots, that's it. So once I started making some songs and things like that,

Megan Ellsworth: Mm-hmm.

Donovan Morgan: I dress regularly, I still have my brand, but I like to dress nice too, things like that. And people see that and they gravitate. And I feel like it's not only just a representation, but it also helps with recruiting, marketing, things like that. people are like, I like doing these things too. I can see myself looking like this. I can see myself doing this kind of thing and making money. Where before it's just music or basketball or sports, let's say.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. Yeah.

Donovan Morgan: And so when you see something else, like, can make money doing roofing. And it actually still make it look good. I can still maybe post this on social media. don't have to hide. That's what it's all about.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah, yeah and still have fun, totally. And it's so nice to have a space created for you and your community where you can be with like-minded people, like you said, be with people that look like you and don't look like you and just support that community also. And I think the Black History Summit is just that, so that's really great. What can attendees expect from this year's event? Are there any?

Donovan Morgan: Mm-hmm. Exactly. Thank you.

Megan Ellsworth: Standout sessions or speakers you're really excited about.

Donovan Morgan: Yeah, so we definitely like to speak about innovation, things like that, try to get us ahead of the curve. We actually have one person that he makes gasoline out of plastic. Yeah, it's called Plastilene. He's gonna be one of the speakers. His name is Julian. He's actually a real young too, young guy. And he invented another gas. So we're gonna put that in one of our roofing trucks.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah.

Donovan Morgan: So we're gonna be the first, we're gonna make history. We're gonna one of the first roofing trucks to have plasticine and have it running that way. But that's something that's real big. Yeah, and we have some other things, like AI. We have some people coming in for financial literacy. We have, it's sponsored by Capital City Loans Bank. And then we have another person coming in to help as far as for business and business financing. So you see, that's one of the main things, especially for newer companies.

Megan Ellsworth: No way! Wow.

Megan Ellsworth: Nice.

Donovan Morgan: That's usually like the pitfalls as far as why people go out of business. So just making sure everyone's financial literacy, literate, that and knowing what steps to take. if we bumped our head, we can kind of help you out so you don't have to do the same thing.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah, that's so nice. And as a young person myself, financial literacy classes and programs are so nice, especially I'm not always like going and looking for them. But if I'm at an event and they have something like that, I'm in that class. I'm set because I need it.

Donovan Morgan: Mm-hmm.

Donovan Morgan: Yup, yup. And in the roofing industry, like really it's a big thing, know? Our first year just getting into business, we did $2.3 million in sales, which is, know, it's okay. But at the end of the day, we didn't know what to do with it. So I had a business partner, know, Dan Dimension and at the end of the day, you know, we got the money and when we're doing builds, we're just splitting it. We're not necessarily putting things to the side, you know, for business. We know about taxes, but we're not necessarily, you know, putting certain things aside and then when it all hits you.

Megan Ellsworth: Wow. Right? Yeah.

Donovan Morgan: It's like, no, okay, now what we have to do, you know? And they're like, nobody told us. So at the end of the day, you don't learn everything in school, but you do have to be able to seek the information, especially when you're getting into business and things like roofing, especially with insurance restoration, because it's not just like a cash deal, you know, you have to wait for the insurance companies to pay out and things like that. So it's always great to have someone that's been in those shoes already, and they can kind of say, hey, this is how it goes, you know?

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. Yeah.

Megan Ellsworth: Mm-hmm.

Donovan Morgan: These are gonna look good, know, doing a couple million dollars a year that looks good, you know, but here's the things that you might have to look out for so that way you can continue doing that, can continue growing.

Megan Ellsworth: Wow, yeah, absolutely. Okay, so how does the summit contribute, would you say we kind of hit on it a little bit, but how does it contribute to empowering contractors, entrepreneurs and business professionals in the industry?

Donovan Morgan: Yeah, again, just as far as giving those tools or filling in voids. So a lot of questions that people might ask or might be afraid to ask or in certain rooms, hopefully in our setting at the Roof Museum, it's more intimate setting as well. So it's not like the big conference with like 6,000 people all over. It's more of a 120 or less as far as group. So it's an intimate group with the same valuable speakers that are...

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah.

Donovan Morgan: That are at the conferences on stages, but now you get to speak with them personally, you know and build your own relationships and really ask the questions that you want to ask as opposed to them being on stage. You raise your hand real quick and then they're gone right after they're done, you know? So with them being there, we're able to mingle with everyone and also like-minded contractors so then we can ask, you know, all the questions or even provide answers for people.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah, networking at these events, especially like you said, this one's kind of, it's not like a 6,000 person conference, is so pivotal because you get really get that one-on-one time with people, with the speakers. networking is a big part of the event. What are some of, do you have any like networking mixers or anything like that for people to get together?

Donovan Morgan: Mm-hmm. Correct. Yeah, so the event's gonna be from 10 to 2 p.m. So it's from 10 to 2. We like to keep it real informative. And then towards the end, that's where we're gonna have the mix where everyone gets to network, shake hands, kiss babies. We'll have everyone introduce themselves so people know who everyone is in the room. And that way we can network effectively. So we'll see what people's pain points are while we're there as far as for our audience.

Megan Ellsworth: Okay, perfect. Yeah. Hahaha!

Donovan Morgan: And then we'll have people that can answer those pain points.

Megan Ellsworth: That's awesome. Yay. Okay. And then remind us what day is this happening? And you said 10 to 2.

Donovan Morgan: Mm-hmm. Yay. Yes. Yes, so it is February 15th. That is a Saturday. That's a day after Valentine's. So after you take your date out on the date, then it's back to the money so that way can pay for all the damages you did the day before. So that's when it's gonna be. It's gonna be February 15th. It's a Saturday. If you are flying in from out of state, then we can also help accommodate as far as for what hotels to pick and things like that. And travel.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. That's great. So why would you say it's important to honor Black History Month specifically within the roofing industry?

Donovan Morgan: Mm-hmm. Yeah, really it's just like, it's just shedding light on everything. I feel like just how you have say a calendar year, you say the year, but every month gets a little shine, it's January, it's February, you know? It's the same thing. it's basically everyone getting their little time so we can show that everyone's valuable. So just like how you have an employee, for instance and you might want to shout out that employee when they do something great. That's all it is. So the industry as a whole.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah.

Donovan Morgan: Everyone gets their particular time where they're able to get a spotlight on them and they get their little shout outs or their spotlight. So for February, it's usually Black History Month in general for the United States, but in construction and roofing, we didn't necessarily have something that was, hey, Black History Month for roofers. So that's what we want to bring to the table. So just how we have when it's Latinos in roofing, for instance, they have their month. I think that's...

Megan Ellsworth: Yep.

Megan Ellsworth: Mm-hmm.

Donovan Morgan: Is it April or March? I don't want to misspeak.

Megan Ellsworth: It's, AAPI is April, I think, then Hispanic Heritage Month is September 15th to October 15th. I actually just looked at it yesterday. That's why I know the exact dates. Random factoid.

Donovan Morgan: Okay, okay. Yeah, yeah, but you see but so yeah, so so that's all it is is the same way You know just just providing spotlights and then we can show who's doing great in the industry So then other people can keep inspiring to be great as well and keep moving the needle forward Yeah, so so February we like everyone says to support. It's not just like just black contractors It's every color and we're just really just again is putting the spotlight. Hey

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah.

Megan Ellsworth: Absolutely. I love it too. Yeah.

Donovan Morgan: These guys look like they're superstars, you know, that they're doing good. And that way just making everyone, you know, feel great about our craft and our business. Because again, construction or roofing is not really the sexiest industry, but when we get together, we're celebrating each other, we're having award shows, we're making it cool. That's what's gonna make everyone put a smile on everyone's face and, you know, keep it moving forward.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. Yeah, well said. I couldn't agree more. I think also it's just so important, like you said earlier on in the podcast, that like, hey, we're here too. It's not just one ethnicity in roofing. It's like a total melting pot. And there are so many black owned roofing companies across the world, across the United States. And this is the time to honor that hard work.

Donovan Morgan: Mm-hmm. Yeah, and that's it. then when it's kind of weird, I don't know, I mainly said, say black and that's, said, for instance, Spanish, know, like Hispanics, but you know, where there's Asians, you know and just whatever it is. even white people in general, but usually what they say for like white, that's like the regular events, right? For some reason, it's not really like spaced out. Yeah, it's like the regular, but honestly, it should be something where just like how a year has like its months.

Megan Ellsworth: And absolutely.

Megan Ellsworth: Yes.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah, for some reason, I don't know why.

Donovan Morgan: Everyone should have their time where you're just getting spotlighted. that's what it is, just like the rotation. So no one gets left out. That's all.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. Yeah, totally, totally. Okay, so how can people get involved with the event, whether it's people attending, sponsors, contributors, how can they get involved?

Donovan Morgan: Mm-hmm. Yes, yes. Yes, so we definitely have sponsors that are coming in as well. So it's the roofmuseum.org. So the roofmuseum.org, that's where you'll be able to get on and you can see all the info for our event and our upcoming events. We have one in July, it's gonna be our third annual Roofer Block Party. That one's gonna be part of the Lego. So that's gonna be cool. So all of our master builders, all of our contractors and roofing contractors, we're gonna be able to have an event with Lego.

Megan Ellsworth: Ooh.

Donovan Morgan: We're all gonna be able to build different things. Yeah, we're trying to make it real fun for the roofing industry, you know? And for the kids, because they're gonna like that kind of stuff too. And then the future when they grow up, know, what roofer you know? Bruce Fideon, don't know, the Roof Museum? And not Bob the Builder anymore. But you know, so yeah, so we have a lot of different cool things that you guys will be able to get in tuned with. We have a lot of different exhibitors at the Roof Museum, which is real cool, where we provide a VIP guided tour.

Megan Ellsworth: It's so cool! Mm-hmm. Yeah, totally. Yeah.

Donovan Morgan: Even our even our kitchen is not a kitchen. It's actually sponsored by the Rufus coffee shop So let me take people inside our Rufus coffee shop. It looks real cool. We have our it's sponsored by Ico Certainteed actually just I'm sponsored this year. They're on board this year, too. We have Accu-Links. We have Job Nimbus. We have Hailtrace we have Pitch Gauge we have Business 411 and a lot of other

Megan Ellsworth: Hee hee. Wow.

Donovan Morgan: Roofing industry components that are sponsoring and exhibitors of the roofing museum. So yeah, so we like to highlight the greats in there and we like people to come by. We give you guys a VIP tour. It's about education and making the industry, putting spotlight on it and making it better.

Megan Ellsworth: That's awesome. Absolutely incredible. so February 15th from 10 to 2 in Marietta, Georgia What other resources opportunities will be available at the summit that we haven't touched on?

Donovan Morgan: Yup yup. Yup. We're gonna be having so much things over there. Really the best thing to do is go onto the roofmuseum.org. That way we can send you guys consistent updates. We do a lot of things. We did things with the prison system where we did some events with them. So getting some people that are getting out of prison to get them back into the workforce. Roofing is one of those industries that are open arms to people to give them second chances and make them make money. Show them how to make money but the right way.

Megan Ellsworth: Yes. Yes.

Donovan Morgan: So we do things with them. We do a lot of things with the community. And as far as for this vet in general, theroofmuseum.org, that'll be the first place and then we can give all the information that you guys need.

Megan Ellsworth: Mm-hmm. Awesome. Everyone can also go to the Roofs by Dawn directory on rooferscoffeeshop.com or the Roof Gallery directory on rooferscoffeeshop.com to find out more. Okay, lastly, Dawn, what is your hope that the Black History Month Summit, what's your hope for the impact that the summit has on the industry and on your community?

Donovan Morgan: Yes. Yes. I hope that... Decades from now, and when I'm gone, that I have a statue of myself and it'll be in front of the Roof Museum, but the Roof Museum is gonna be like more bigger, it's gonna be in a bigger place, more official. And then just like how you have Walt Disney, and he has a statue of himself with Mickey Mouse at Walt Disney World, I wanna have something similar, have a little station for the kids so that they know and all the things that we're doing right now will actually get recognized. So from the theme songs to,

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah.

Donovan Morgan: The home improvement show that we have every single day, just trying to, again, put spotlight on roofing and make it look more commercialized and more fun that will actually get recognized for those and be like, they started that and now these new people or these younger people are finishing it and doing things bigger. I wanna inspire a shingle designer. Because I always said I wanna be a shingle designer, but it's hard, you know, I speak of manufacturers, you know.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah, absolutely. I love that.

Donovan Morgan: And we're doing things like that right now, but I want to sponsor the future shingle designer that when we have a Gucci roof, they be yeah, heard Roots by Don talking about it and he actually did an event with Burberry. He's the first contractor to do an event with Burberry. And that sparked my mind to say, hey, let's get a designer roof. And that's where they're doing it or things like that. So that's what we want to do.

Megan Ellsworth: I love that. Yeah. Incredible. I'm so excited for the summit and for the great things that are gonna come out of it. February 15th, 10 to two. Everyone go register, go fly out there and enjoy a great event. Dawn, thank you so much for chatting with me.

Donovan Morgan: Yay! Thank you and then we have to save in advance for the next one for next year. We gotta have you come out and then you guys gotta do a performance. Or for the block party in July, we'll figure it out. But thank you again, I really appreciate it that you guys like always giving a spotlight for one for the Black History Month event that we have.

Megan Ellsworth: Yes. Okay, we'll talk, we'll talk. Well, thank you so much.

Donovan Morgan: But just in general, like I said before we had a Black History Month event, you guys were the first I seen that had a platform for black contractors and you put different people on a platform to speak. And I feel like that was real big because again, before really getting on social media, I didn't see people in other positions. So you guys helped us see one black owners, roofing owners, but then I seen other positions as well in the distribution side and things like that.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. Yeah.

Donovan Morgan: And I feel like that's real cool. If we could keep spotlighting people in different positions, not just roofing contractors, but who's a black manufacturer? And if there's none, hopefully this conversation can start that so we can get a black shingle manufacturer, know, to just where there's none, you know? Just things like that, know, different places. Who makes the caulking? Who makes the nails? Just all that. And we can start filling in the void so that way everyone can be represented everywhere, you know? And that's it.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. Yes, I know, yeah. Yeah, that is my goal. I want to see a total rainbow of people in every position in roofing and just make this industry totally open arms to anyone and everyone. Yes, yep.

Donovan Morgan: Like a melting pot. Yeah, make it a melting pot. I feel like that's what the United States is in general. It's a melting pot of everyone. And when you have everyone, we're able to show our personalities. We're able to problem solve differently, because we all have different ways of problem solving and things like that. And we can push the needle forward.

Megan Ellsworth: Mm-hmm. Yep. Yeah, absolutely. this has been so inspirational. Thank you, Don. Everyone out there, please go to rooferscoffeeshop.com to the Roofs by Don directory to learn more. And Don, what was the Roof Gallery's website one more time?

Donovan Morgan: Thank you.

Donovan Morgan: So the roofgallery.com, that's where we'll make your roof a work of art. And then the roofmuseum.org, that's where you'll get roofing education and things like that for the community. So just like you see the Mona Lisa, that's in the museum, roofmuseum.org. And then we have the actual painter, that's the roof gallery, where you're gonna make your roof a work of art.

Megan Ellsworth: Perfect, incredible. Everyone out there listening, thank you so much. Please make sure you subscribe and ring the bell so you get notified every time we upload a new episode. And we'll see you next time on Roofing Road Trips.

Donovan Morgan: Ding ding ding ding ding. Thank you guys.

            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

By The Roof Gallery.

Don’t wait for disaster — ensure your roof is ready for anything.

When was the last time you gave your roof the attention it deserves? In places where intense weather swings from summer storms to winter chill, your roof quietly takes the brunt of it all. But neglecting its care could mean turning a blind eye to costly repairs or, worse, structural disasters waiting to happen. A professional roof inspection isn’t just a seasonal chore — it’s your home’s first line of defense against unpredictable elements. The Roof Gallery teaches us how proactive roof care can save you money, stress and even your home’s integrity.

Delving into the roof inspection process

Every year, countless homes fall victim to the wrath of Mother Nature, with roofing taking the front-line hit. A comprehensive evaluation starts with the cracks and crevices that are easily overlooked by an untrained eye. These inspections are not just about a cursory glance from ground level; experts climb up to evaluate every inch, seeking out budding problems like improper shingle installation or wear and tear from age and the elements. It’s this depth of analysis that can unearth issues homeowners may have no idea existed. What starts as something minor, like a few loose shingles, can evolve into serious concerns if not caught and addressed promptly.

The importance of professional expertise

Professional roof inspectors bring a level of expertise that typically surpasses the most diligent homeowner’s ability to identify subtle signs of roof distress. They come equipped with the knowledge to spot signs of moisture infiltration, the potential for ice dams and insulation deficiencies — issues that, left unattended, result in costly long-term damage. Through an expert’s lens, the minutiae of your roofing system is examined with precision, ensuring not a single potential leak or weak spot goes unnoticed. It’s the keen eye for detail that sets professional inspection services apart from casual observation. For residents, employing such expertise is not just beneficial, but necessary to withstand the unpredictable climate.

Safeguarding your home investment

Think of a roof inspection as an integral part of safeguarding your investment in your home. Beyond the surface level, inspectors scrutinize the structural support, ventilation and overall construction of the roofing system. Through their analysis, they provide recommendations tailored to enhancing the resilience and functionality of your roof. These recommendations might include simple maintenance tips or identify urgent repair needs, thereby empowering you as a homeowner with knowledge and control over your home’s condition. Making the informed decision to seek regular inspection services is an investment in the preservation and safety of your property, maintaining its value and ensuring your family’s wellbeing.

Establishing a secure future for your roof

Proactivity is the hallmark of prudent homeownership when it comes to maintaining a sturdy roof. The key to averting potential disasters is to act before the problem manifests and this is where the real value of a roof inspection shines through. A detailed report from a professional can provide you with a clear roadmap for any necessary preventative measures or immediate repairs. This foresight is crucial, especially considering the unpredictable weather patterns different climates can experience. Too often, homeowners are reactive rather than proactive, leading to higher costs and more extensive damage down the line.

Understanding your roof’s life cycle

Your roof is more than just a top layer; it’s a complex system with a life cycle that requires careful management. Throughout this cycle, your roof will encounter a myriad of weather conditions that can test its resilience. By staying ahead with regular inspections, you are effectively extending your roof’s overall lifespan. Every check-up is not just an assessment but an opportunity to optimize your roof’s performance and longevity. Knowledge of when to perform necessary maintenance can result from these professional evaluations, adding years to your roof’s life.

Concluding thoughts on taking action

In conclusion, the benefits of securing professional roof inspection services cannot be overstated. It’s a proactive measure that can save not only money but also ensure the enduring safety of your home. As we unveil the big picture, remember that regular maintenance supported by expert advice can prevent the majority of roofing issues. If you’re looking to protect your home and maintain its integrity, visit The Roof Gallery to learn more and schedule your first inspection today. Don’t let negligence cost you more in the future; prioritizing your roof’s care today will afford you peace of mind for tomorrow.

Insights from the experts

Tip 1

Regular roof inspections are a key preventative measure. Have your roof checked at least twice a year, in spring and fall, to identify potential problems before severe weather can cause significant damage.

Tip 2

Check for obvious signs of roof damage such as missing shingles, damaged flashing or sagging gutters. These exterior clues can indicate underlying issues that need immediate attention.

Tip 3

Stay proactive with seasonal maintenance. Ensure that your gutters are clean and debris-free to prevent water damage and consider trimming overhanging tree limbs that could pose a threat during storms.

Tip 4

Understand what’s covered in your roofing inspection. A thorough inspection should include an examination of shingles, gutters, flashing and the attic space to assess ventilation and insulation.

Tip 5

Work with certified professionals for inspections and repairs. Look for roofing inspectors with certifications and good reviews, who can provide detailed reports and offer clear, actionable advice for maintaining your roof’s integrity.

Your roofing questions answered

How often should I have a roof inspection?

It’s advised to have your roof inspected at least annually, but preferably twice a year, especially after the summer storm season and before winter sets in.

What are the signs that I need roof inspection services?

Signs you need an inspection include missing, cracked or curling shingles, leaks in your attic or ceilings and significant moss or algae growth on the roofing surface.

Can a roof inspection prevent long-term damage?

Yes, regular roof inspections can detect early signs of damage, allowing for repairs before issues escalate, thus preventing long-term structural harm and costly repairs.

What does a typical roof inspection entail?

A typical inspection involves examining not just the shingles but also gutters, flashing, vents and chimneys, as well as the attic for proper insulation and ventilation.

How can seasonal roof upkeep save me money on repairs?

Seasonal maintenance, such as cleaning gutters and removing debris, can prevent water damage and extend the life of your roof, thus saving you money on future repair costs.

Emergency roofers can restore peace of mind after a storm.

When the skies start to darken with signs of storms, roofs are in danger. Sudden storms can leave homeowners in an emergency situation with damage to their roofs and in need of help. Roofs shield homeowners from unpredictable weather but sometimes the weather takes advantage of weak points in the roof. Hailstorms and hurricanes can take homeowners by surprise and, over time a roof will wear down and homeowners are left vulnerable. If a roof becomes damaged, it must be attended to as quickly as possible because it is a dire situation and repairs are urgent to ensure safety. A skilled roofing crew can act as a buffer from more disasters. The Roof Gallery wants to highlight the importance of emergency roofing crews as their speed and efficiency are essential in these critical moments.

In the face of imminent danger, the unease you feel can be paralyzing; every minute counts, and decisions must be rapid yet informed. Recognizing signs like missing shingles or a sudden leak during or after severe weather is essential. It’s the difference between a quick fix and extensive, costly repairs down the line. This is why understanding the importance of having an emergency plan is crucial. Transitioning from anxiety to action, homeowners and business owners alike need to know exactly who to call and what steps to take when disaster knocks at their door.

An emergency roof repair isn’t just about mitigating damage; it’s about restoring your peace of mind quickly and efficiently. With the right emergency roofing crew at the ready, the storm’s aftermath becomes manageable. The reassurance that comes from knowing help is on the way can be a beacon of hope amidst the chaos. Ensuring that your chosen roofing professionals are equipped to handle the most urgent repairs is paramount. Through swift action and a deep understanding of what’s at stake, we see just how pivotal an immediate, expert response is in protecting our homes, businesses and well-being against ever-changing weather.

Diving deeper: the emergency roofing process explained

Identifying what constitutes a roofing emergency can mean the difference between a quick repair and a full-blown crisis. When the weather can be unforgiving, even seemingly minor damage can escalate quickly if not addressed. A small leak today could lead to substantial water damage, mold growth and even structural compromise if left unattended. Knowing the signs of damage—such as water stains on ceilings, missing shingles or blocked gutters—can prompt you to seek help before these issues magnify. Immediate action not only saves your property but also conserves your time and financial resources in the long run.

When you call for an emergency roofing response, what happens next is a structured sequence designed for efficiency and effectiveness. First, a professional dispatcher will evaluate the situation and determine the urgency. Upon understanding the gravity of the damage, a highly skilled crew is rapidly deployed to your location, equipped with the tools and materials to secure your roof from further harm. This response team’s goal is to provide a swift, temporary fix, such as tarping the affected areas, to protect your property until a more comprehensive repair can be made. Their adept action under pressure can be the linchpin to preventing a larger catastrophe.

Finally, understanding the professionalism and preparedness you should expect from a emergency roofing crew is essential. These specialized teams are not ordinary workers; they are tradespeople with extensive training to handle high-stress, urgent scenarios. They move swiftly but meticulously, understanding that their work affects not just a building’s integrity, but the safety and security of those within it. With the knowledge of the latest roofing techniques and materials, combined with a passion for helping in times of need, these professionals embody the expertise necessary to navigate the complexities of emergency roofing repair. Trust in their abilities allows for peace of mind, knowing your emergency is in competent hands.

Securing your peace of mind after the storm

As we conclude, it’s vital to recognize the unmistakable importance of being proactive towards roofing emergencies. In the aftermath of a storm, the convenience of having a trustworthy emergency roofing crew becomes not just a service but a true source of comfort. These professionals do not merely repair your roof; they restore normalcy to your life disrupted by unforeseen events. Key to this restoration is the assurance that comes with knowing your home or business is secure, allowing you to focus on other aspects of recovery after a tempest. It is this knowledge and preparation that transform a chaotic situation into a managed one, exemplifying the power of readiness.

Summarizing our discussion, understanding when to call for help, knowing what services are available and having confidence in the professionals you choose, will shape your emergency roofing experience. Look forward to receiving services characterized not only by speed but also by a high standard of workmanship and customer care. During these times, communication, clarity and compassion are as crucial as the technical skills the roofing crews bring to your doorstep. Remember, good decision-making in crisis times hinges on having the right resources and knowledge at your fingertips—empower yourself with both. By staying informed, you can ensure that, should the need arise, your emergency situation will be resolved with efficiency and expertise.

In the spirit of preparation, forge a connection with a roofing service before emergencies strike and familiarize yourself with their offerings and response times. It is this thoughtful planning that can spare you the stress and expense of navigating roofing emergencies on your own. Whether you manage a residential property or a commercial facility, the wisdom in choosing a reliable, responsive roofing partner cannot be overstated. When the dark clouds clear, and calm returns to the skies, the reassurance that comes from such a choice will shine through. Let your final takeaway be the understanding that through preparation, expertise and trust in the right emergency roofing team, you can weather any storm that comes your way.

Insider roofing rescue techniques

Tip 1 - Ensure you have a reputable roofing company’s number on hand before disaster strikes. Speed is crucial in emergency situations, and having a trusted expert just a call away can save valuable time and prevent further damage.

Tip 2 - Regularly inspect your roof for potential weak spots. Being proactive can minimize the risk of severe damage during harsh Texan weather, allowing for a rapid and efficient emergency crew dispatch if needed.

Tip 3 - Understand your insurance policy’s coverage on emergency roofing repairs. In the event of damage, knowing what is covered can expedite the repair process and decrease stress knowing expenses can be managed.

Tip 4 - Keep an emergency kit ready with tarps, tools and sealing materials. If a storm hits and causes damage, you can implement temporary fixes to protect your property while waiting for the professional emergency roofing crew.

TIP 5 - Educate yourself on the signs of roofing damage, such as water stains, missing shingles or blocked gutters. Identifying issues early can lead to quick dispatch of emergency roofing crews and prevent the need for more extensive repairs.

Your roofing concerns answered

How quickly can an emergency roofing crew arrive after calling?

Our rapid dispatch policy ensures a crew is on-site as quickly as possible, typically within hours of your call to address any urgent roofing needs efficiently.

What types of roof damages qualify for emergency services?

Roof damages that allow water infiltration, pose structural risks or significantly impact the interior are considered emergencies and need immediate professional attention.

Are emergency roofing services available throughout the night?

Yes, reputable emergency roofing services operate 24/7 to ensure that you can get help whenever severe weather hits, no matter the hour.

How can someone determine if their roofing issue is an urgent emergency?

If the damage is extensive enough to compromise your safety, such as large leaks, missing sections or visible sagging, it’s crucial to call an emergency crew immediately.

What should someone expect when the emergency roofing team arrives?

Expect a professional assessment of the damage, immediate steps to prevent further damage and a detailed explanation of necessary repairs and the ensuing process.

Three business owners and roofing experts share insights about prioritizing health and wellness for their employees and in the roofing industry overall.

Health is a hugely important part of any industry, but especially notoriously tough sectors like roofing. From the physical labor it takes to work on the roof to the mental demands of sales and customer service, you can find yourself or your crew pushed to the limit. To foster long-term success and sustainable growth in this industry, it’s important to prioritize both physical and mental wellbeing. This means in addition to making sure your gear is well maintained and your processes adhere to regulation, you must also prioritize physical health and mental wellness.

Health and wellness are the fuel that drives people. When properly maintained, they can minimize the threat of injury, keep you sharp and help you unlock your full potential, allowing you to bring your absolute best to the job site. They also promote happiness, reduce stress and improve your overall quality of life.

Business owners have a responsibility to maintain the health and safety of their employees, which is why it’s so important to have a comprehensive wellness plan. However, unlike the clear-cut standards of safety regulations, wellness is a personal journey influenced by various factors on and off the job. This can make creating a wellness plan that fits your organization a challenging and complex process. To help point you in the right direction, folks over at IKO Industries interviewed three business owners — Matt Weston of Calendar Construction, Donavan Morgan of Roofs by Don and Megan Sim of Meg Sim Roofing — to see how they maintain health and wellness on and off the job. They shared their insights on a variety of topics, from healthy eating and sun protection to supporting employee mental health and wellness.

Matt Weston of Calendar Construction

In 2015, Matt Weston and his wife Erin started Calendar Construction, which services Charleston, West Virginia, and the surrounding area. Recently, they’ve expanded to include Calendar Roofing, which specializes in residential and commercial roofing in northern Michigan. Speaking with Matt, he shared some of the ways he integrates health and wellness into his organization.

Using sun protection

As we all know, working on a roof all day in the sun can greatly impact your physical well-being. Yet, Matt is constantly shocked by the number of roofers who don’t apply sunscreen, “You don’t want to get burnt because when you’re wearing all your harnesses and safety equipment, and your skin’s irritated, you’re going to be irritated and not feeling your best.” So, to help protect his crew, Matt always stresses the application of sunscreen and supplies his team with long-sleeve UV-blocking shirts.

To minimize the effect of harmful UV rays even further, Matt explains how he schedules his day around the sun, “The most work is taking the shingles off, cleaning them up and then getting the shingles on the roof. So, our goal is to get that accomplished as soon as possible. If we can get all three of those things accomplished before 10 or 11 in the morning, before it starts getting warm, that allows us to function better throughout the day.”

He also likes to plan his midday break when it will be the most beneficial for his crew, “Usually we use the hottest point of the day to take our break, and in that hour, hour and a half, it might cool down five or six degrees. So, you’re reenergized and rehydrated, and the weather is more in your favor.” Of course, working in the sun is unavoidable in the roofing industry, but Matt can decrease direct exposure as much as possible by working around it.

Working in pairs

Many hands make light work, and the lighter the work in roofing, the easier it is on the body. To maintain employee health and wellness, Matt makes everyone work in pairs to ensure his employees don’t overexert themselves. “They feed each other. One person is taking the shingles and handing them to the person who’s nailing the shingles down, which speeds up the process and it’s less work for the person installing the shingles.” There’s also a secondary benefit, “People can keep an eye on their partner in case they start getting tired. They can regulate each other.” When nailing, it can be easy to get in the zone. Having someone there to look after you is an excellent way of ensuring you don’t accidentally push yourself beyond your limits.

To maintain his employees’ mental health and wellness, Matt regularly checks in with his crew: “I’ll buy them lunch or take them to a restaurant after we’re done working and reflect on everything. I ask them how they feel and if there’s anything I can do better as a boss.”

Separating your professional and private lives

Matt understands the pressures and stress that come with being a business owner. He’s experienced firsthand the difficulty of separating your professional and private lives, and the toll it can take on your mental health. So, to ensure he always makes time for himself, Matt creates space between himself and the job, “I have to physically go do something to get away from work because, in this industry, it’s time-consuming. You’re not just physically roofing. You’re bidding on jobs. You’re dealing with current, past and possible customers. So, you have to physically step away.” Matt does this by getting away on his boat, spending time with his family and engaging in hobbies that keep his mind occupied.

Another way Matt maintains his mental health is by using the car ride home to reflect and unwind, “I reflect on how the day went and think to myself, ‘Maybe we could have done this better.’ And I make a mental note or physical note on my phone. And then, by the time you get home, you’re done with work as soon as you walk in.” Matt also uses this time to catch up with loved ones, calling his wife or parents so the job doesn’t become all-consuming.

Donavan Morgan of Roofs by Don

Donavan Morgan is the owner and operator of Roofs By Don. Committed to quality and creating an exceptional roofing experience, Don serves the regions of Atlanta, Marietta and Norcross, Georgia, and has been featured on HGTV. Don believes that “health is wealth” and thus takes employee health and wellness incredibly seriously. Here are some ways Don works to make his team happy and healthy.

Keeping your crew educated

A big issue Don sees in the roofing industry is the misrepresentation of proper safety guidelines and procedures, “The one I hear the most,” says Don, “is, ‘Yeah, climbing a ladder, you need to have three points of contact,’ or ‘You’re not tied off correctly.’ But who’s actually certified? Did they get certified as far as being tied off? Or is everyone just acting like they’re teachers, and no one took the class?” While it may be well-intended, sharing safety advice with no frame of reference can create a false sense of security on the job site, leading to accidents and injury.

To ensure everyone is following proper safety guidelines, Don strives to get every member of his crew certified by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. To make this as easy as possible, Don brings the training to them by employing an OSHA-certified trainer and holding a roofer education and safety event. The event allows his employees to get OSHA-certified and rub elbows with representatives of the safety industry, test products, ask questions and better understand how to stay safe.

Thinking about your sales force

You don’t need to be working on a roof all day to feel the pressures of the industry. Don believes having good mental health is critical to maintaining the wellness of your sales force, “You have to have good mental health because that’s what’s going to get you through all the ‘no’s.’” Most sales forces work off commission, and hearing ‘no’ repeatedly can be a stressful and disheartening experience. So, to help keep their spirits up, Don puts a positive spin on the daily grind with a thought exercise, “If someone wants to pay you $1,000, would you hear 100 ‘no’s’?” This encourages his salespeople, inspiring them to maintain a positive outlook and keep working for the “yes” because, as Don says, “Once I get the ‘yes,’ it’s gonna be worth hearing all those ‘no’s.’”

Don also keeps his sales force properly hydrated, ensuring team leaders keep water in their vehicles and reminding them to ask for water when needed, regardless of whether they seal the deal or not, “Even if someone says, ‘Hey, I’m good on the free roof inspection.’ You say, ‘No problem at all. It is 90 degrees outside, though. Do you happen to have a bottle of water?’ That will go a long way during the summer.”

Appreciating your crew

Showing your crew members how much you appreciate their hard work can do wonders for employee well-being and mental health, and it’s something Don goes above and beyond to provide his employees. When it comes to the “how,” Don follows a simple mantra: “We’re regular people, so we like to do cool stuff.” For Roofs by Don, that means treating the team to boating trips, go-karting and other fun activities. He’s a proud sponsor of the Atlanta Hawks, so he regularly treats them to basketball games and Atlanta Braves games. He’s always finding ways to show his crew members they are valued and respected.

Don also does everything he can to support his employees outside the job, “We like to be what’s called ‘Dream Facilitators.’ We ask, ‘What do you guys like to do outside of roofing?’” Don encourages everyone to share their passions and interests with him and then does whatever he can to get them closer to their goals. As Don says, “Roofing is not supposed to kill your dreams. It’s supposed to enhance your dreams.” By supporting his crew members outside of work, he can make the roofing industry a positive and uplifting experience that enhances their quality of life.

Megan Sim of Meg Sim Roofing

Megan Sim started Meg Sim Roofing in 2020 and serves the community of London, Ontario. In just a few short years, Megan has grown her organization into a thriving business dedicated to providing the absolute best for her clients and employees. As a former CrossFit trainer, Megan sees the body as “the vessel that is doing everything for you throughout the day, including your job.” With these employee health and wellness tips, she can help you take wellness and roofing to the next level.

Warming up

To help get everyone’s bodies physically ready for the day, Megan likes to lead her crew through a quick, 10-minute warmup. Utilizing her background as a personal trainer, Megan caters these warmups to the specific muscle groups used while working on a roof. “If we’re roofing, then it’s a lot of bending, so try to warm up those muscles that are going to be keeping you in that position. And then, I’m also trying to open up the opposite muscles.”

Like Don, she believes roofer education is essential to maintaining wellness and always explains how stretching strengthens muscles and helps decrease injury. In addition, she uses this time to go over the job, review safety procedures and pinpoint potentially hazardous areas—all in 10 minutes! This has had such a positive impact on her employees’ health and wellness that it’s become an essential part of their day, and they are quick to remind her if it’s ever forgotten.

Eating well

To maintain the physical wellness of herself and her crew, Megan stresses healthy eating habits on the job. For example, she recommends protein bars throughout the day, but warns of being tricked by misleading labels, “There’s a lot of things out there that say high in protein because it has peanut butter in it, as an example. But peanut butter, if you look at the macronutrients, is mostly fat with some protein and no carbs.” So, when looking for the right protein bar, Megan follows this rule, “It’s protein, carbs, fat. It’s not a protein bar if there’s more fat in it than protein.”

Megan starts every day with a homemade oat parfait loaded with protein and energy, which she calls her “Super Gains Oats.” “That has like 900 calories in it,” she laughs, “For a reason, because I know that I really need to start myself off with something good.” She also makes her own protein pancakes, which make great on-the-go snacks and make it easier to maintain a healthy diet with her busy schedule.

If you’d like to try either, Megan was nice enough to share the recipes with us.

Encouraging physiotherapy services

As a former personal trainer, Megan is fully aware of the toll working on a roof takes on the body and the lengths one must go to fully recover, “Even with regular mobility, the job is very repetitive. So, I would have to spend equal amounts of time in the opposite positions to mitigate those situations.” To speed up recovery and reduce the risk of injury, Megan routinely gets deep tissue massages, sees a chiropractor and receives acupuncture.

She also makes these services available to her employees, “I give my employees massage or chiropractor gift cards for them to take care of themselves outside of the job and have those types of self-care moments for themselves, especially when we’ve had hard weeks.” Megan works to break down the barriers and misconceptions many people have about massage therapy, “Some people look at [massage therapy] as something that’s bougie. Like, ‘Oh, only fancy people do that.’ But that’s totally not true,” she told us. “So, I try to kibosh those sorts of thoughts by actively talking about it all the time, saying this is what I do on a regular basis, and then also making it possible for everyone.”

She’ll do this during her pre-work warmup or talk to roofers one-on-one. Knowing that it can be challenging to find moments to talk on a busy job site and that some may feel uncomfortable coming to the boss with a problem, Megan does her best to create opportunities for open communication, “I’ll have them come on the drive with me or be my assistant at that moment and then check in on their actual life and how things are going for them outside of this job.”

What you can do

It’s important to remember that every business is different, and wellness is a very personal process. What works for some might not work for others. However, we hope that the shared experiences of these three business owners have shown you the multitude of ways you can elevate and maintain your, your crew’s and your business’s well-being.

Increasing weather concerns call for stronger and curated roofing solutions.

There is a large demand for building infrastructure all around the world. While expansion is necessary, often the need for quality roofing systems is overlooked. They are crucial to the longevity and protection of all homes, structures and buildings since they serve as the first line of defense against the elements. That’s why Norcross High-End Roofing Systems, based in Georgia, has specifically designed a roofing system to handle the intense sunlight, severe weather and humidity common in Georgia and other areas across the U.S. And here at The Roof Gallery we’re showcasing their superior roofing systems for commercial properties.

In identifying the need for high-end roofing solutions, businesses must recognize the merits these systems offer beyond mere aesthetics. These advanced roofing options bring forth many advantages, such as enhanced thermal insulation and substantial energy savings. Moreover, they stand as a testament to a business’s commitment to quality, signaling to clients and partners alike a dedication to excellence and sustainability. As the initial apprehension concerning the upfront cost dissipates, the realization dawns — investing in a high-quality roofing system aligns with long-term strategic planning and financial prudence. Consequently, the early adoption of state-of-the-art roofing technologies becomes a compelling discussion point for savvy businesses.

This urgency is not without merit; the benefits of transitioning to high-end roofing systems are tangible and measurable. Longevity, robustness and energy efficiency are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the advantages they bring to the table. Key for businesses is understanding that such benefits go hand in hand with a professionally curated selection process, tailored to the unique environmental challenges and architectural styles prevalent in their region. By prioritizing a system that offers a powerful combination of performance and style, enterprises can ensure their rooftops are as resilient as they are representative of their brand’s values. This strategic approach to roofing is no longer optional but a critical investment for any business that looks to cement its standing in a competitive market.

The pillars of high-end roofing systems

At the core of Norcross High-End Roofing Systems lies a commitment to materials that exceed standard quality benchmarks. These materials are selected based on their ability to withstand the region’s unique climate, which includes intense heat and sporadic inclement weather. High-end options such as slate, tiles and metal are not only about longevity but also about providing superior protection and minimal maintenance over time. They are designed to resist fading, cracking and warping, which commonly afflict lesser-grade materials. By opting for these premium materials, businesses can enjoy a roofing system that maintains its integrity and appearance for decades.

Energy efficiency is another cornerstone of these prestigious roofing systems. Innovations in roofing technology have led to materials that reflect solar heat, rather than absorbing it, effectively reducing cooling costs and promoting environmental stewardship. This forward-thinking approach to energy conservation is not just an operating cost matter but also resonates with the growing consumer demand for sustainability. As such, a roof becomes more than just a shelter; it’s a statement of a business’s commitment to eco-conscious practices. For those interested in exploring these advanced systems, Roofs by Don offers insights and solutions that align with the highest industry standards.

Installation is a pivotal factor that should never be underestimated when considering a roofing upgrade. Even the highest grade of materials can falter without expert installation. Therefore, it is imperative to select a team of certified professionals with a proven track record in installing top-tier roofing systems. A reliable installation not only ensures optimal performance but also maximizes the lifetime of the roof. It is this level of precision and care that establishes a roofing system’s reputation as truly high-end, distinguishing it from the more common alternatives on the market.

Expert roofing insights for businesses

Tip 1: When considering a high-end roofing system, prioritize materials that are known for their resilience to elements like heat and humidity to match your climate. These systems typically involve advanced technologies that combat the effects of sun exposure and moisture.

Tip 2: Investigate the energy efficiency of the roofing materials you’re considering. In Georgia, for example, a reflective or “cool” roof can significantly lower air conditioning costs by deflecting more sunlight and absorbing less heat.

Tip 3: Ask about the warranty terms for any high-end roofing system. Premium warranties can provide peace of mind, but they also indicate the manufacturer’s confidence in the longevity and performance of their product.

Tip 4: Consider the architectural style of your commercial property. High-end systems offer aesthetic versatility, with materials like metal roofing or high-grade shingles that can enhance your building’s appearance while providing top-tier protection.

Tip 5: Don’t overlook the importance of proper installation by certified professionals. Even the most sophisticated roofing systems rely on expert installation to ensure the full benefit of their features — such as weather-sealing and insulation properties — is realized.

Final considerations for roofing excellence

When making the decision to invest in a high-end roofing system, knowledge is your most valuable tool. Reputable roofing professionals will not only provide you with a durable product but will also offer insights into the best materials and designs suited to the local environment. They appreciate that a roof is a long-term investment and therefore ensure a thorough assessment of your specific needs. It’s essential to partner with a team that explains the benefits and potential ROI of high-quality roofing materials in straightforward terms. Trustworthy advice from industry experts can greatly simplify the decision-making process while aligning with your business goals.

One frequently asked question concerns the telltale signs indicating it’s time for a roofing upgrade. Visible wear and tear, recurrent leaks, increasing energy bills and concerns about the visual appeal of your building are indicators that your current system may be failing. These signs often suggest that maintenance costs will soon outweigh the cost of a new, more efficient roofing system. Any delay in addressing these issues can lead to more significant expenses down the road, emphasizing the importance of timely action. Proactive measures can save businesses in Georgia both time and money, solidifying their operational resilience.

To summarize, the selection of a Norcross High-End Roofing System is a strategic move that reflects a commitment to quality, efficiency and aesthetic appeal. By choosing superior materials and ensuring expert installation, businesses can secure their operations and enhance their commercial space. The long-term benefits of such an investment contribute not only to the sustainability of the building but also to the overall brand image. Remember, when it comes to protecting your commercial interests, there should be no compromise on quality.
