The energy in Liverpool was undeniable as the Liquid Roofing and Waterproofing Association (LRWA) hosted its sold-out 2026 awards gala, bringing together more than 430 roofing professionals for a night dedicated to craftsmanship, innovation and community. RoofersCoffeeShop.uk was proud to be there, sharing in the excitement and recognizing the outstanding work shaping the future of liquid roofing and waterproofing. 

From the moment the evening began, it was clear that this event continues to grow in both prestige and impact. Now in its eighth year, the LRWA Awards have become one of the most anticipated events in the U.K. roofing calendar, highlighting the very best across projects, people and performance. 

Recognizing the people behind the projects 

The Student of the Year award went to Harry Robinson of Blackpool Industrial Roofing, whose dedication, professionalism and passion for the trade set him apart. Completing his NVQ ahead of schedule and showing up every day ready to learn, Harry represents the future of the industry. 

Trainer of the Year was awarded to Shane Copestake of Triflex, recognized for his engaging training style and commitment to developing skilled applicators through clear communication and hands-on learning. 

And in a moment that truly resonated across the room, Ray McCarten received the Special Contribution Award. With more than four decades in the industry, his work in training and workforce development has helped shape today’s skilled workforce and elevate standards across the sector. 

Showcasing standout projects across the U.K. 

What stood out most this year was the level of excellence across every category, especially in the Liquid Waterproofing Project of the Year where StructureCare, a Tremco company, earned top honors for their work on the Bell Street Green Transport Hub in Dundee. This project demonstrated how liquid-applied roofing and waterproofing systems can extend the life of aging structures while supporting modern performance expectations. The StructureCare team addressed extensive deterioration within the existing multi-level structure through comprehensive deck refurbishment, targeted concrete repairs and the installation of corrosion mitigation systems designed to protect the building long term. 

The liquid-applied system allowed the team to navigate complex detailing and maintain continuity across the structure, all while keeping disruption to a minimum. In addition to the technical achievement, the project delivered strong sustainability outcomes through responsible material management and by repurposing an existing structure into a revitalized transportation hub that better serves the surrounding community. 

Overall, the project awards demonstrated just how far liquid roofing systems have come, especially when it comes to solving complex challenges. Additional awards included: 

• Murray Edwards College, Cambridge, took top honors for projects under 1,000 m², showcasing innovation on a uniquely designed historic roof where traditional approaches were limited  
• Christ’s College, Cambridge, won for projects over 1,000 m², successfully blending preservation with modern performance requirements  
• One Leadenhall in London stood out in the buried application category, overcoming the logistical challenges of a dense urban environment  
• 76 Southbank, London, earned Sustainability Project of the Year, highlighting environmental responsibility and community impact  

All of the projects highlighted not just technical excellence but also the growing role of sustainability, innovation and collaboration in roofing today. 

Sustainability and innovation take center stage 

One of the most exciting aspects of this year’s awards was the continued focus on sustainability. Now in its second year, the Sustainability Project of the Year category evaluated entries on environmental impact, social value, innovation and responsible supply chain practices. 

Projects like 76 Southbank showed how roofing is playing a critical role in achieving broader environmental goals, from biodiversity gains to reduced carbon impact and long-term building performance. 

This aligns with what we are seeing globally. Roofing is no longer just about protection. It is about performance, energy efficiency and long-term environmental responsibility. 

A night that reflects a growing industry 

As LRWA leadership shared throughout the evening, the continued growth of the awards reflects the strength and momentum of the liquid roofing sector, with innovation and quality continuing to raise the bar.

Focussed on fire performance

The AlphaGuard Blueshield system has been extensively tested and independently certified by the BBA in the UK with the highest possible fire classification; Broof(t4) under BS EN 130501-5 2016.

Tremco's team was comprehensive in their approach, testing a broad range of scenarios combining AlphaGuard Blueshield with varying insulation types (EPS and XPS) and thicknesses to ensure that all solutions were compliant with thermal efficiency standards whilst achieving Broof(t4) classification.

The system has also been vigorously fire tested with external finishes, including sedum, ballasted and paving systems for green roofs, recreational podiums and for the foundation for solar PV. Additionally, further fire tests were carried out to include a blue roof build-up, testing with sedum, ballasted and paving systems.

Tremco’s expanded approach to testing means that the build-up, with its combined elements, work harmoniously together in mitigating the risks of fire. It should be reassuring that whether an inverted or blue roof inverted system is required – AlphaGuard Blueshield is fully compliant to fire safety requirements. The NHBC considers fire performance a key component of building safety. Therefore, the thorough approach Tremco has adopted should give specifiers total peace of mind.

Alongside the extensive fire testing, it also has a certified durability of up to the design life of the roof of which it is incorporated. The system complies with BS 6229:2018 and guidance outlined in NHBC technical requirements for flat roofs and balconies.

Learn about how Tremco has established itself as a waterproofing and coating leader not only nationally, but internationally.

You’ve probably heard of Tremco Roofing, who has been delivering high quality, comprehensive roofing and weatherproofing solutions since 1928, but have you heard of Tremco Construction Products Group which operates on a global stage? In this episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Heidi J. Ellsworth spoke to Mardee Billingsley, the executive vice president of Tremco Construction Products Group about what they do and where they operate.  

Mardee has been working with Tremco for over 28 years now. She has worked in all parts of the company, from running a WTI service department to rooftop construction management, but in the past four or five years her focus has been on Tremco’s international expansion through the Construction Products Group (CPG. Mardee shared a bit of the background on this branch of Tremco, sharing, “Tremco Roofing is a division of Tremco Construction Products, which is our overall platform that provides sealants, waterproofing, roofing, concrete masonry products. And WTI would be the service division under that as well. Tremco Construction Products operates in North America as well as Europe. Then Tremco CPG is an operating group for RPM International, which is a $7 billion global company that specializes in specialty coating, sealants, building materials and related services in other continents.”  

This expansion has been a great opportunity for Tremco to continue to grow their expertise and innovate new weatherproofing solutions. On the administrative side, going global brings a fair number of cultural and linguistic challenges. Mardee explained, “It’s not always the roofing that's different, it's the cultures and the environments. So we meet with our regional teams weekly or monthly and it's really not about roofing. Of course languages are the biggest barrier. And then financial and regulatory distinctions are all things that play into it.”

And when it comes to the products, these new environments have fueled the team at Tremco CPG to innovate and problem-solve in new ways. Mardee gave an example, saying, “If you get into areas like South Africa where it's on the coast and it's very salt water heavy, you get that corrosion in the air. In that situation, a typical acrylic metal coating, it just won't endure. So those roofs require a much more corrosive resistant coating, which we are able to connect clients there to through one of our other RPM partners.”
