Take a few minutes to stand with Virginia’s roofing industry and protect the state’s Right-to-Work law.

For more than 70 years, Virginia’s Right-to-Work policy has protected employees’ freedom to choose whether union membership is right for them. It’s also been a foundation of the Commonwealth’s economic strength, helping Virginia consistently rank among the best states for business. Repealing this law would jeopardize that success, raising costs, limiting workforce flexibility and creating new challenges for contractors and suppliers across the state.

Why this matters to roofing contractors

1 – Worker choice stays protected. Right-to-Work ensures your crew can choose the path that fits their needs and budget.

2 – Virginia stays competitive. Keeping Right-to-Work in place reinforces Virginia’s reputation as a state where businesses can grow, invest and create jobs. This policy has helped attract new companies, encourage expansion and support a steady flow of construction and infrastructure projects across the Commonwealth.

3 – Small businesses stay strong. Right-to-Work helps small businesses control costs, adapt to changing market conditions and reinvest in their people through competitive wages, training and safety programs.

Your voice can influence decisions

Virginia Association of Roofing Professionals (VARP) Advocacy Chair Rick Heath recently sent email communication urging contractors to take action before bills begin moving. He shared, “Legislators pay close attention to the constituents they represent. Hearing directly from roofing professionals in their districts will help ensure our concerns are understood.”

VARP is part of the statewide Keep Virginia Working coalition, which has launched an easy online tool to help you contact your state Senator and Delegate in just minutes: keepvirginiaworking.com.

Since 1967, VARP has served as the unified voice of Virginia’s roofing industry, bringing together contractors, suppliers, consultants and manufacturers to promote high standards, provide education and advocate for favorable laws and regulations.

VARP ensures that roofing professionals have the support they need to grow their businesses and protect their interests through:

Professional resources and networking

Technical and safety training

Mentoring and workforce development programs

Proactive representation at the state level

Take action today

Your participation matters. Your voice matters. And together, through strong industry associations, we can help keep Virginia a competitive, pro-business state where roofing companies can thrive.

Visit keepvirginiaworking.com to message your legislators today and stand with the roofing industry at a pivotal moment for the Commonwealth.

In a time of labor shortages, these associations are teaming up to prove roofing is a pathway to success.

According to the RoofersCoffeeShop® 2025 Roofing Industry Trends Report, sponsored by QXO, over 50% of respondents indicated having faced a labor shortage in the field, and another key demographic identified new hire training as the greatest training need. The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) and Virginia Association of Roofing Professionals (VARP), in partnership with SkillsUSA, are leading efforts to address both concerning trends.

In June 2025, the NRCA and VARP hosted the first annual VARP Roofing Career Camp based on the national SkillsUSA model. Scott Shufflebarger, president of Hertless Brothers Roofing, Inc. and past president and chair of various NRCA and VARP committees, shared, “SkillsUSA is the training vehicle and way to get folks back into our industry. It provides an entry point for so many different people in so many different ways, and that pathway leads us into the classroom, summer camp and training our workforce.”

Sherri Miles, president of Miles Roofing, Inc. and former president of VARP and current executive board member of NRCA, added, “SkillsUSA gets kids excited. Having roofing there is amazing because it engages with teachers, students and parents in a way they didn't understand roofing before. It really elevates the entire industry.”

NRCA’s and VARP’s efforts aren’t only helping students looking for a career path; they’re helping existing roofing contractors attract and train new crew members for the future. “We're training kids before they get to us, so they're going to have some base of knowledge and common language before coming into the industry,” Sherri stated. “The success rate of them being not only attracted but retained at a company is much higher.”

Looking ahead, Scott and Sherri hope to refine the summer camp format to become a plug-and-play blueprint for other cities across the country to implement. “The goal would be that VARP refines this enough so we can package it and replicate it easily so that this playbook can be handed anywhere across the Commonwealth of Virginia or the western part of the states,” Scott said. “We want to build something that's modular that can be implemented to make an impact for our industry.”

“We're a perfect outlet for employment and training,” Scott added. “We have a pathway to massive success in entrepreneurship and having a wonderful career as well as training a better and more skilled workforce.”

Industry experts share their experience leading an annual roofing career summer camp that introduces high school students to the endless possibilities of the roofing industry.

This past summer, the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) and the Virginia Association of Roofing Professionals (VARP) teamed up with the Henrico County Public Schools Career & Technical Education (CTE) Workforce & Career Development to hold their first annual VARP Roofing Career Camp.

The three-week camp introduced seven rising 9th-12th-grade students to the world of roofing. Scott Shufflebarger and Sherri Miles, two industry leaders who helped put the camp together, spoke to The Coffee Shops™ about the experience.

Scott is the president of Hertless Brothers Roofing, Inc., a 90-year-old contracting company that serves the Greater Richmond area, and he has served as past president and chair of various NRCA and VARP committees. Despite his many commitments, Scott showed up to the camp every single day to help train and guide the students.

“My goal in the program was to introduce them to the breadth of the roofing industry,” Scott stated. “Most people conceptualize the roofing industry as just banging shingles. We came into the summer camp with the intent to both expose the students to the breadth of careers and their opportunities, knowing that the sky is the limit.”

Sherri is a fourth-generation roofing contractor, president of Miles Roofing, Inc., former president of VARP, past board member and current executive board member of NRCA and vice president of Roofing Alliance. Her passion for education and advocating for the roofing industry helped fuel the camp’s success.

“Roofing is not something that you do because you can't do anything else,” Sherri said. “Roofing is a noble profession, so every time we can elevate it — whether it's through education, certifications, the way we talk about ourselves — we're going to. It makes a real impact in people's lives.”

On top of exposure to the wealth of opportunity in the industry, the camp also prioritized hands-on learning experiences with the technology and tools associated with the trades. These exercises were based on the SkillsUSA model, where students did everything from installing insulation and adhering membranes to flashing walls and building seams.

One stand-out experience in the program was safety day, when camp attendees were exposed to all the facets of fall protection. After learning about the different types of harness styles, students strapped into real harnesses and were suspended from a “fall truck.”

“It was a full-on, hands-on engagement that most professionals in our industry actually don't get to go through,” Scott shared. “Probably 1 in 10 have the experience of being suspended from either a tripod or from a fall truck. They basically built a mini roof. They got to do it all.”

To reward the completion of the three-week crash course, students received Kask hard hats. The entire experience gave budding professionals access to industry leaders, incomparable experience and a wealth of knowledge to take forward into their future.

“We wanted to show them not only the diversity of the roles, but the diversity of the people that are in this industry. We are a perfect mirror of what society is and what success in society is,” Scott stated. “We're a perfect mirror of the American Dream.”

Roofing associations are incredible resources for networking and business growth opportunities. But they also foster community.

In Season 5, Episode 53 of Roofing Road Trips™, Heather Greenwell and Rick Heath Carlisle met with host Megan Ellsworth to talk about the Viriginia Association of Roofing Professionals (VARP). Heather described VARP as more than just a business resource, saying, “It's a great group of individuals made up of all different kinds of roofing professionals in Virginia. I’m just happy to be here.”

That emphasis on the community formed within and around VARP was displayed during their 56th Annual Convention last summer. Rick emphasized that the conference was a time to “talk about best practices, what went right, what went wrong, and enjoy each other's company for a couple of days.” He believes that one of the things that makes the VARP convention special is the relaxed atmosphere that fosters community and conversation. Heather echoed that sentiment, saying, “We worked hard to create this atmosphere of collegiality and comradery so that business competitors can come together and hang out and enjoy each other's company and really work together for the industry.”

Beyond their conference, VARP works to build up and develop the industry community in Virginia. Heather explained, “We have tangible benefits for joining, such as membership discounts on our awesome events and insurance rebates through our partnership. But really, I feel like the purpose of VARP is to support and advance the roofing industry.” One way they do this is look for ways to work together to expand the industry and bring new workers into their community. Rick elaborated, saying, “We are working with the local school districts and the guidance counselors to find younger persons, males and females, to try to get them in the roofing industry.”

Learn about the Living Lab Roofing Project that gives Henrico Career and Technical Education students the opportunity to learn firsthand!

Virginia Association of Roofing Professionals (VARP) is a trade association dedicated to promoting and supporting the roofing industry in Virginia. Since their founding in1967, one of their pillars has always been education. So, they were more than happy to collaborate with the Henrico Career and Technical Education (Henrico CTE) in the Living Lab Roofing Project. This project takes Henrico CTE electricity, masonry, HVAC and carpentry students get to work on a roof replacement while learning about career opportunities in the roofing industry. Mac Beaton from Henrico CTE explains the power of this project, saying, "If you're just listening, you can tune that out real quick. But if you're listening while you're doing, it is so valuable in that whole learning process." He went on to emphasize that, "The skillsets they're learning, while it might not be something that you read in a textbook, the fact that they've seen it and touched it has real value to them."

This is not the first time this project has been run, Paul Davis, a member of VARP recalled talking to the students in 2019 and then having a former student come in for an interview, "He said "I remember you coming to speak to our class." So we got reacquainted, of course he was hired. He's here with us today. He's been with our company for a little bit more than two years now." Whether students enter the roofing field like that example, or just get a valuable learning experience, the Living Lab Roofing Project helps them get a step forward.

This year, over a hundred middle and high school students participated. The students first heard from VARP member volunteers about roofing career pathways and then got hands-on experience repairing a retrofit metal roof at Highland Springs Advanced Career Education (ACE) Center.

An exceptional thank you to Mac Beaton, director of CTE at Henrico County Public Schools for his support and collaboration as well as to Susan Moore. Susan is a former private-sector roof consultant who now works for Henrico County Public Schools. Susan helped with the project design that would allow VARP to share a hands-on roofing experience with students.

This event would not have been possible without the generous participation of VARP’s Workforce Development Committee. Their skilled technicians led the students in making the roof repairs. The following VARP member companies provided volunteer roofing crews for the day:

Baker Roofing

Hertless Brothers Roofing

Phoenix Roofing

Roof Services a Tecta America Company

Thank you to the following individual VARP members who were on-site to talk with
students about roofing career pathways:

Adriana Atehortua Arango, ABC Supply

Paul Davis, Jr., Phoenix Roofing

Get ready for a productive 2024 by becoming a sponsor with this trade organization. Promote the roofing industry through education and advocacy while also building recognition for your own business.

As 2023 comes to a close, it is already time to start thinking about your company’s goals and initiatives for next year! Getting involved in associations is one great way to network within your community and support the roofing industry. The Virginia Association of Roofing Professionals (VARP) is extending an invitation for all VARP member companies to consider becoming an annual sponsor for 2024. Your investment will not only advance their mission to educate and advocate for Virginia’s roofing industry, but you’ll also enjoy unparalleled exposure and recognition at events throughout the year!

If you pay in full by December 15, 2023, the sponsorship package is priced at $3,500, saving you over $1,200 throughout the year on sponsor recognition at VARP events.

Some benefits of becoming a sponsor include:

Logo on VARP website: Elevate your brand’s visibility and prominence in the Virginia community by aligning your company with VARP. Your support as an annual sponsor will show your commitment to the growth of the industry and gain you access to a network of industry leaders and invaluable resources for growing your company.

Logo in VARP newsletters: The association sends out 20+ emails throughout the year, and your logo will appear in each one! This is another benefit that will help you establish trust, credibility and recognition within the community.

Summer convention sponsorship: Receive one complementary individual registration and recognition on all marketing pieces as the prime sponsor for this event! Focus on your icebreakers to meet new people instead of worrying about the financing to attend.

October Fall Golf Classic recognition: The best benefit of all, be the prime sponsor for the annual fall classic, with recognition on all marketing pieces, as well as a complementary foursome registration to participate.

VARP President Marc Reitzel looks forward to welcoming you as a partner in their mission to elevate and champion Virginia’s roofing industry in the upcoming year. Become an annual sponsor today and reap the benefits all year long!

VARP leads innovation and supports an industry through government affairs advocacy and workforce development.

The Virginia Association of Roofing Professionals (VARP) is integral to the state's roofing community and works to support the industry through innovation and advocacy. In a recent Roofing Road Trips® episode, host Heidi J. Ellsworth interviewed Heather Greenwell, VARP's executive director, and Rick Heath, a representative for Carlisle Roofing and an active member of VARP. Together they shared their thoughts about this year's 56th Annual Summer Convention and the broader impact of VARP on the industry as a whole.

The Annual Summer Convention, as Heather explained, “Is a chance for the roofing professionals, contractors, suppliers and consultants to come together once a year." It's a special event that provides a platform for the industry to both celebrate recent achievements and discuss collective issues.

Rick, who has been with the association for nearly two decades, reiterated this sentiment. "It's a time to get together as a roofing community," he said, emphasizing the relaxed, informal nature of the event that makes it easier "to have a conversation over a cold beer rather than sitting in an office."

However, the association's efforts extend far beyond annual conventions. Rick highlighted VARP's commitment to staying ahead of government affairs and contributing to workforce development. These efforts not only support the industry but also "help separate our accredited contractors from the two guys in a pickup truck that don't have licensing," he pointed out, underscoring the association's dedication to professionalism.

Currently the organization is working on creating a streamlined path to solar licensing for accredited contractors looking to expand their business offerings. “Right now, you have people putting solar panels on roofs and putting holes in customers' roofs and voiding their warranty,” Heather said. “But that's what VARP's all about, is working on these common issues that benefit everyone.” With the community's involvement, the association hopes to be able to start a solar licensing program by 2024.

RoofersCoffeeShop® participates in the 56th Annual Summer Convention for Virginia Association of Roofing Professionals (VARP).

RoofersCoffeeShop is known for being on the road and participating in our great roofing industry associations. Recently, I hit the road and traveled to Virginia Beach for the 56th Annual VARP Summer Convention. It was great. I was able to make industry friends and incredible roofing contractors.

According to VARP’s recent announcement, “this year’s convention kicked off with the welcome reception and cornhole tournament. Congratulations to this year’s champions: Justin Maitland of Johns Manville and Anson Martin of Valley Roofing. As one attendee put it, "the first night was very casual and fun and allowed for a lot of networking with new connections and catching up with existing connections."

The next morning was the annual meeting and education sessions. Committee chairs updated members on the status of various VARP activities and programs, including advocacy and workforce development. For the education portion, attendees were treated to a presentation by Lisa Sprick, NRCA’s Chairman of the Board, who gave an update on the current roofing industry landscape.  After that, Patrick Readyhough led a group discussion on the roofing industry best practices.

The discussion included important topics that are affecting all roofing companies including mergers and acquisitions; hiring, retention and core values; and promotion from within along with safety and recruitment bonuses. One very interesting discussion was on the use of AI Chat and how companies are using it to write SOPs, marketing documents and recruitment ads. The format included questions submitted ahead of time and then Patrick leads the discussion. It was very insightful.

The annual awards banquet was held later that evening. Attorney General Jason Miyares was the keynote speaker and was recognized by VARP for his work to support small businesses. After dinner, VARP recognized this past year’s outstanding volunteers and installed the 2023-2024 Board of Directors:

Contractor of the Year – Paul Davis, Jr., Phoenix Roofing
