How Tapco unites aesthetics and performance in their products.

While a roof’s primary function is to keep a home secure from the elements, that is far from its only role. Roofing has been shown to be a huge factor in the kerb appeal of a building, with it making up to 30% of what is seen when you approach the house. Because of this, it is crucial that you help your customers not only find a roof that protects their home but adds to its visual appeal. And if you’re looking for that crucial combination of performance and aesthetics, look no further than Tapco Roofing Products’ shake and slate options.

Shake without the constant maintenance

Many homeowners love the natural look of cedar shake; however, as roofers know, traditional wood roofing comes with a variety of challenges, including rotting, cracking and curling. But, thanks to Tapco, you can deliver the look of shake without its high maintenance needs.

Tapco’s DaVinci Select Shake product line is engineered out of virgin resins that make it resilient in the face of any-and-all challenges that Mother Nature might throw at a home.

Not only does it achieve a BROOF(t4) classification in accordance with EN 13501-5 fire testing for full UK & EU compliance, but it also comes with the highest Class 4 impact rating, a 110-mph wind resistance and a 40-year warranty!

And the best part? Every Select Shake product is carefully designed with the thick construction, deep grooves, unique chisel marks and realistic grain patterns that create the shadows and visual richness of shake. If your customer wants a stunning roof that provides the aesthetics of cedar wood roofing without the constant maintenance, DaVinci Select Shake is the solution.

Slate, but not as you know it

Another popular roofing aesthetic is that of slate. Homeowners tend to love slate’s natural, non-repeating, timeless beauty, however there are a variety of reasons it might not be a viable option for some of your clients.

Whether that’s because of weight or pitch restrictions, cost limitations or lack of access to the tools/experience needed for the installation.

Further, for those properties subject to impacts on the roof, such as golf & sports clubs and school buildings, traditional slate can require frequent repairs.

TapcoSlate overcomes all these common challenges. Each slate tile is made of pure virgin resins that have been fortified with limestone and state-of- the-art UV stabilisers.

This composition means TapcoSlate is lightweight (as little as 12kg/m2), comes with a class 4 impact rating, passed Miami-Dade’s 110mph wind test and withstood the 2,000 hours of super-intense xenon arc light in the ASTM G 155-05a test! In other words, if your customers want the look of slate without some of the traditional challenges, TapcoSlate is a great choice.

TapcoSlate delivered an easy installaton and long-lasting aesthetics.

Connor McGregor and his team are primarily interested in one thing: Customer satisfaction. So, when he met with homeowners on a farm located on the outskirts of Stewarton, East Ayrshire, he listened hard to their roofing concerns.

Their older home had a Scotch Slate roof that was “nail sick.” It was obvious that rusted nails had caused slate tiles to dislodge, break and come loose. This disheartened the homeowners because they loved the appearance of the original roof.

“They were rather distressed,” says Connor, director of McGregor Roofing out of Stewarton. “They wanted the appearance similar to their current roof, but they knew they needed a stronger roofing product that could stand up to the weather conditions they face in Scotland.”

TapcoSlate® recommendation

As he does several times a year, Connor told his customers about the benefits of TapcoSlate® roofing tiles. Made from recyclable virgin limestone and polypropylene, the tiles are lightweight yet durable.

“TapcoSlate is a way for homeowners to get the realistic look of slate without the cost and weight of natural slate,” says Connor. “This tile is good for Scottish weather. It copes well with the strong winds and heavy rain, which is so prevalent in areas like the west of Scotland.”

Connor adds that from a contractor’s standpoint, the TapcoSlate tiles are easier and faster to install than natural slate due to their pre-marked nailing and exposure guides and spacers. There’s also lower jobsite waste and projects move swiftly.

All TapcoSlate tiles are fully tested to BBA, UKTA and ETA standards and have UKCA and CE marking, including fire rating, wind, driven snow/rain and water absorption. BRE testing for wind-driven rain, like that found in Scotland, found TapcoSlate to perform much stronger than all equivalent materials tested and at a lower pitch.

“However, the most important thing to the homeowner is that the TapcoSlate has a consistent appearance that truly duplicates natural slate,” says Connor. “And they get a long, 40-year warranty on the product from Tapco Roofing Products.”

“Over the Moon” customer response

For this project, the homeowners selected the Coachman Mix color blend of grays. The authentic color combination accurately reflects the original roof color of the home.

“The homeowners were delighted with the finished project,” says Connor. “They had only seen pictures of previous TapcoSlate jobs I completed. They were ‘over the moon’ with the consistent appearance of the TapcoSlate on their home. We’re really proud to be able to achieve that type of customer satisfaction with a project.”

Inside Tapco’s roofing systems and their performance advantages.

In a new episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Heidi J. Ellsworth got the chance to talk to Mike Winter from Tapco Roofing Products about how their tile and shake products offer the perfect combination of aesthetics and durability. Tapco’s products are synthetic composites. Mike shared, “It's made from virgin limestone and polypropylene, which creates a stunning synthetic product that looks natural but has performance benefits like being lightweight.”

Being lightweight means that not only is the weight strain on a building’s structure lessened in comparison to traditional tiles, but also that it is easier to transport and install. Mike explained, “As soon as it lands on the job site it can be in straight away. There's no starting or anything like that, the contractor is good to go. So that's a big part of making the job easier.”

And being lightweight is just one of many benefits that come with Tapco composite products. Mike shared some more, “It being a composite product allows us to control all parts of manufacturing and engineer it for peak performance. For example, we test it against fire, wind driven rain and moisture absorption and our testing house partners say that it was the best-performing when compared to similar products.”

The result is a highly durable product that can withstand whatever is thrown at it. Mike gave an example, “We've done installs on things like golf courses and cricket grounds, places where there might be balls flying around that could crack traditional tile. But with our products, it’s so robust you don’t get any of that. It stays strong even with balls hitting it.”

At the end of the day, all of these benefits make Tapco’s products a great option for both contractors and their clients. For the contractors, they can keep their operation costs lower thanks to the improved handleability of the composite products. And for the clients, they can save money in the long run as Tapco’s products require less maintenance and stand up to the elements better than competing products.

            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

By Tapco Roofing Products.

Why this roofer suggests Tapco Roofing Products to his clients.

By serving as a sole trader of Ashworth Joinery, Luke Ashworth receives his highest reward from one-on-one relationships with his customers.

“I’m very particular in the work being done and I want to keep it that way,” says Luke, whose company is based near Lancashire. “We specialise in both bespoke joinery services and transforming underutilised conservatories into comfortable, energy-efficient living spaces.”

For many years Luke has relied on lightweight TapcoSlate® tiles for the restoration of conservatory roofs. During a single year’s timeframe he may use the easy-to-install roofing product on almost two dozen projects.

Zero problems

What makes Tapco® a repeat product for Ashworth Joinery? “I find them to be a good value for the money,” says Luke. “The finish of the roofs once fitted is unmatched with TapcoSlate on it. And, in my 18 years of owning my business, I’ve never had any issues with product callbacks. Their 40-year warranty is great, and once the customer sees the finished roof it confirms for them that they’ve made a good choice.”

Transforming a conservatory

As most people know, conservatory conversions come when owners have almost given up on these spaces in the home. Perhaps the conservatory is too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter. Maybe the roof leaks or simply has worn out. Whatever the reason, enhancing the comfort and usability of the conservatory is a specialty for Ashworth Joinery.

“Converting a conservatory roof can significantly improve thermal efficiency, reduce energy bills, and create a more comfortable living space,” says Luke. “Modern roof options, like TapcoSlate, offer better temperature regulation, soundproofing and aesthetic appeal. Once we have finished with a conservatory it becomes a great all-year-round room.”

Authentic, durable tile

For some homeowners, the thought of using “plastic-like tiles” on their conservatory doesn’t sit well. If that happens, Luke brings them samples of the durable TapcoSlate, which are made of recyclable virgin polypropylene and limestone. That’s when their entire attitude changes.

“These tiles genuinely look better than real slate,” says Luke. “The Pewter Gray and Charcoal Black are easily the most popular colours we sell. The pigments in the tiles are unmatched."

Reflecting on his projects using Tapco products, Luke shared some thoughts:

For me, the best part is when the property owners see the finished project. Remember that most roofs are tired and damaged when we begin a project. Once we have fitted the new warm roofs using Tapco products, all our customers are amazed at the difference. They love the tile effect finish. And I really enjoy being able to bring them the transforming project that makes their home more usable and beautiful.

            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

TapcoSlate® and DaVinci Select Shake Tiles compatible with solar panel installations.

The UK’s rush to capture as much solar energy power as possible is working. Recent reports show that in March of 2026, 27,607 new solar installations were completed in the UK - the highest monthly deployment since 2012.* Of those, 66% were on domestic properties.

The race for the “liquid gold from the sky” follows the Solar Energy UK plans for 1.6 million rooftops to feature solar panels by 2030, with solar technologies enhancing one in every 20 structures. This noble energy-saving goal is enticing to homeowners hoping to save on rising energy bills, and those who wish to do their part in helping the environment.

Not all roofs are the same

“We applaud every person planning to employ solar panels onto their roofs,” says Michael Winter, general manager at Tapco Roofing Products. “At the same time, we also remind both homeowners and roofers to do their research on the types of roofing tiles that work best and are fully compliant with solar panels.”

Natural slate and shake roofing materials are often difficult to work with solar panels. Both can crack and break with the installation of the panels, along with when people walk on the roof for servicing and maintenance of the panels. However, lightweight composite slate and shake tiles, moulded to exactly replicate the natural roofing materials, offer more durability and can be walked on.

Reliable composite slate products

The team at Nu-Look Conservatory Roof Solutions in Northampton exclusively uses TapcoSlate® tiles for all their conservatory roof installations. According to company leaders, the recyclable virgin limestone and polypropylene products are lightweight, durable, energy efficient and are backed by a 40-year warranty.

Solar panels can easily be fixed to TapcoSlate by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Brackets should be fixed to the wood structure of the roof (and not just using TapcoSlate as an anchor) and any fixings/brackets through the slate should be properly sealed with a butyl-based sealant to prevent water ingress into the roof space.

Additionally, the roofing product is fully tested to BBA, UKTA and ETA standards, and has UKCA and CE marking, including fire rating, wind, driven snow and rain, plus water absorption. BRE testing for wind-driven rain found TapcoSlate to perform much stronger than all equivalent materials tested and at a lower pitch.

At Green and Heritage Roofing, in Halifax, their skilled team orchestrated a reroofing project featuring TapcoSlate, Viridian Clearline solar PV panels and Velux roof windows. The complex project shows how homeowners can work with roofers to transform their old roofs into energy-saving roofs that provide long-lasting benefits.

Shaking up roofs

For those homeowners looking to add solar panels to roofs with shake products, durable DaVinci Select Shake tiles are the answer. The state-of-the-art roofing tile is made of virgin resins, UV and thermal stabilisers, plus fire retardant. Lightweight yet durable, the tiles are ideal for matching up to solar panels.

“The authentic wood profiles make DaVinci Select Shake the most realistic composite roofing product available in the UK,” says Winter. “They have a BROOF(t4) fire rating and an amazing 40-year warranty for peace of mind. Plus, these deeply-grooved tiles resist rotting, cracks, pests and algae.”

The next step

TapcoSlate Roofing Products provide UK roofers and homeowners with the best composite products in the marketplace and contribute to environmental sustainability. More details on advantages of both TapcoSlate and DaVinci Select Shake tiles can be obtained at Tapco Roofing Products or by contacting info@tapcoslate.com.

            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

TapcoSlate® Tiles offer environmental benefits, exceptional durability and aesthetic appeal for conservatory roofs.

With about three million UK homes having conservatories, roofing professionals can build their businesses by responding to marketplace needs for conservatory remodels by offering durable TapcoSlate® roofing tiles for projects. With authentic slate aesthetics, superior performance and environmental benefits, TapcoSlate positions roofers at the forefront of industry innovation and homeowner satisfaction.

Environmental benefits: Sustainable materials for modern homes

Crafted from recyclable virgin limestone and polypropylene, TapcoSlate tiles are an eco-friendly choice that appeals to environmentally conscious homeowners. By offering a roofing solution that reduces landfill waste and utilises sustainable materials, roofers can differentiate their services and help clients lower their environmental footprint.

Warranty and durability: A 40-year promise of quality

TapcoSlate stands out with its industry-leading 40-year warranty, providing peace of mind and a compelling sales advantage. This long-term guarantee underscores the product’s durability and reliability, allowing roofers to assure customers of lasting value and protection.

Additionally, the product is fully tested to BBA, UKTA and ETA standards, and has UKCA and CE marking, including fire rating, wind, driven snow and rain, plus water absorption. BRE testing for wind-driven rain found TapcoSlate to perform much stronger than all equivalent materials tested and at a lower pitch.

Market opportunity: Conservatory roof demand in the UK

According to The Great British Conservatory Census 2024, one in five British households have conservatories, most constructed in the 1980s. This equates to thousands of conservatories across the UK requiring roof replacement as the structures age, presenting a significant business opportunity for roofers.

As homeowners increasingly seek to modernise and improve their properties, the demand for high-quality, energy-efficient roofing solutions is on the rise. In the survey, while 65% of those surveyed indicated they used their conservatory daily, 53% said that their biggest frustration with their conservatory was that it was too hot or too cold. Roofers bringing energy-efficient solutions to homeowners are certain to gain more business.

Homeowner benefits: Enhanced kerb appeal, energy efficiency and usability

Replacing a conservatory roof with TapcoSlate tiles not only enhances kerb appeal but also improves energy efficiency and year-round usability of the room. The lightweight yet robust construction helps regulate temperature, reduce heating costs and create a more comfortable living space.

In addition, as a selling strategy, roofers can relay to homeowners that the 2024 study shows that of those surveyed, 56% said they would be more likely to buy a home if it had a conservatory. For this reason, upgrading an existing conservatory is a good investment if someone is thinking about selling a home in the future.

Sales strategies: Getting the roofing business

Another survey finding that roofers should know is that more than 40% of those surveyed were unhappy with the exterior of their home. While this could be the cladding, windows or other features, the roof certainly comes into play. This can especially be the case with a conservatory that was made from glass or polycarbonate roof panels.

Roofers focusing on these key details have the best chances of winning new business:

Highlight authentic appearance: Emphasise TapcoSlate’s natural slate look, which adds elegance and value to any conservatory.

Stress durability and warranty: Point out the 40-year guarantee and the tile’s resistance to weathering, fading and cracking.

Focus on environmental advantages: Share the benefits of recyclable materials and how TapcoSlate supports sustainable living.

Leverage market data: Reference the Census data to demonstrate the urgent need for conservatory roof upgrades, especially if a homeowner is selling a home.

Tailor solutions: Offer personalised consultations to address homeowners’ specific needs, reinforcing TapcoSlate’s versatility and quality.

Taking the next step

TapcoSlate roofing tiles provide UK roofers with a unique opportunity to grow their business, meet homeowner expectations and contribute to environmental sustainability.
TapcoSlate provides a modern, high-performance solution that improves ventilation, weather resistance and long-term durability.

The Premier Inn Hinckley is a popular getaway. Overlooking the picturesque Trinity Marina and Ashby Canal, it’s close to historic battlefields, Drayton Manor Resort and the always popular Thomas the Tank Engine’s special theme park section.

When it came time for the hotel to replace its old Cambrian Slate roofing material, the management team turned to RML Roofing Contractor, which serves the whole of the UK. TapcoSlate in a Pewter Grey colour was chosen as the authentic-looking replacement for the hotel roof.

“The low gradient/pitch is one of the main reasons TapcoSlate was chosen for this project,” according to David Gillam, CEO of RML Roofing Contractor. “This product, combined with the high-performance membrane and treated timber battens, gives the hotel a new breathable roofing system that should serve them well for many decades to come.”

Project goal

According to David, his roofing company was appointed to deliver a comprehensive roof and external envelope refurbishment to the Premier Inn Hinckley. This covered approximately 1,900 m2 of roof area. The hotel’s team was seeking a modern, high-performance solution for their roof that would improve ventilation, weather resistance and long-term durability across the building. TapcoSlate was the answer.

Authentically-shaped with textured surfaces and riven edges moulded from natural slates, TapcoSlate is almost indistinguishable from natural slate. It has an even more refined appearance. The composite product will not crack, break or delaminate.

The product formulation for TapcoSlate and its manufacturing processes provide durability, performance and longevity for many years. And, as both RML Roofing Contractor and Premier Inn Hinckley discovered, by providing a lightweight and easily installed product, installation costs are lower, with less waste!

Getting the job done

To complete the massive roof replacement, the skilled team at RML Roofing Contractor stripped off the existing Cambrian slate roof and then added in the new breathable roofing system, including the Pewter Grey TapcoSlate tiles. Several key aspects of the project included:

Tiled air vents installed above every guest room to improve roof ventilation and reduce condensation risk

Upper roof bays were stripped back and refurbished with a new breathable membrane and cladding

All existing fascias, soffits and guttering were removed and replaced with new systems

New rainwater goods were installed to correct falls, improving performance and delivering a clean, modern external finish

Integrated insect mesh was installed to allow airflow while preventing pest ingress

Final results

Both the roofing contractors and management team at Premier Inn Hinckley are extremely pleased with the new roofing system and the TapcoSlate products. The dedicated team at RML Roofing Contractor was able to complete the project safely and efficiently, providing the hotel with a solution for long-term viable commercial use.

“Based on our experience with TapcoSlate on the Premier Inn project, we’re very likely to recommend this product to future customers,” says David. “This composite roofing product helped RML Roofing Contractor significantly improve the overall building performance, resilience and lifespan of the project. We’re proud of the work done on this robust, low-maintenance roofing project and look forward to using TapcoSlate products again on future projects.”

How one contractor delivered years of durability, performance and longevity with TapcoSlate.

When roofing contractor Barry Goodwillie was tasked with finding a roofing product for an addition to match up with existing Welsh Slate on a main home in Moneydie, he turned to TapcoSlate.

Authentically-shaped with textured surfaces and riven edges moulded from natural slates, TapcoSlate is almost undisguisable from natural slate.

“The old wooden shingles on the house extension were done after 20 years,” says Barry, director at BG Roofing, a company focusing on providing professional and affordable roofing services in Perth and Tayside. “The extension was not built to support the weight of real Welsh slate, but the lighterweight TapcoSlate is a wonderful solution. This is the first time I’ve used the TapcoSlate and I thought the quality was brilliant. I will definitely use it again on future projects.”

Natural-looking slate appearance

For this job, the homeowners were just as pleased with the outcome as was Barry. He explained:

They liked how the Pewter Grey slates have a refined appearance, and were pleased we could find an alternative to traditional heavy slate. Most importantly, they were pleased that we still managed to make the TapcoSlate look the same as the rest of the house with its traditional Welsh Slate appearance.

Dependable durability for every job

The product formulation for TapcoSlate and its manufacturing processes will provide years of durability, performance and longevity for the house extension. The composite product comes in 7 colors and will not crack, break or delaminate.

TapcoSlate is made from recyclable virgin limestone and polypropylene. There are no recycled plastics in the products. Fully tested to BBA, UKTA and ETA standards, TapcoSlate has UKCA and CE marking, including fire rating, wind, driven snow and rain and water absorption. The product is also BRE tested for wind-driven rain and it’s found that TapcoSlate performs much stronger than all equivalent materials tested and at a lower pitch. Backed by a 40-year warranty, the roofing tiles cut simply with a fine-toothed saw or sharp utility blade.

“The TapcoSlate was easy to work with,” says Barry. “The pieces have pre-marked nailing and exposure guides and spacers. The project went quite well and I’d be happy to use them again!”
