40 Years Strong: MuleHide celebrates its 40th anniversary

Low-slope roofing manufacturer MuleHide celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2025, marking four decades as a trusted name in commercial roofing. 

“What we’ve achieved in those 40 years is pretty incredible,” said Managing Director Dan Williams. “In 1985, we were a small company serving a small segment of the industry. Today, we are one of the leading players in commercial roofing. That is an accomplishment to be proud of.”

The Lehon Company of Chicago established the MuleHide brand in 1906 to manufacture shingles, roll roofing, siding and other roofing products. It quickly became known for its high-quality, long-lasting products.

Ken and Diane Hendricks, co-founders of distributor ABC Supply Co. Inc., purchased the brand with a vision of helping their customers enter and succeed in the commercial roofing space. The company’s beginning, in December 1985 in Beloit, Wisconsin, was a modest one. EPDM was initially the only product offering. A handful of employees worked in a converted duplex with one computer and carbon paper for invoices. But by offering practical solutions and providing hands-on training and outstanding service, the team built relationships one project at a time.

Today, MuleHide offers a full range of premium-quality commercial roofing systems, allowing contractors and specifiers to customize solutions to meet the needs of any project. Those products are available nationwide and into Canada.

Behind it all is a team of more than 100 associates. They are the MuleHide difference.

“You can have the best products and the best systems, but they won’t mean anything if you don’t also have the best team,” Williams said. “Our people take tremendous pride in what they do. They are experts in our products and commercial roofing. They know our customers and understand their businesses. They are incredibly responsive. They go above and beyond for our customers every day.”

MuleHide has much to celebrate as it marks 40 years in business, but the anniversary is also about looking to the future. The culture that has fueled MuleHide’s growth – an unwavering focus on being its customers’ partner in success – will continue to guide the company for decades to come.
