A new direction in life with one less hurdle

Friends for life: military bonds.  

Cesar Mejia is a retired veteran, having served in the military for 13 years. His life recently took a significant turn when he began experiencing persistent headaches and a spot in his left eye. He was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS),  a chronic illness that affects the central nervous system, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective covering of nerve fibers, causing various neurological symptoms. Despite this challenging diagnosis, Cesar remains determined to forge a new path for himself. 

Currently, Cesar is studying at Austin Peay State University. His ambition is to steer his life in a different direction, expressing his goal to News Channel 5, “Honestly, I just don't want to work for nobody.” However, despite his drive to build a new life, he faced a significant obstacle. His roof was in need of repairs, but unfortunately, his insurance company refused to cover the costs, adding an extra layer of stress to his already challenging situation. 

On a seemingly ordinary Tuesday, a stroke of luck brought a welcome change. A crew of roofers arrived to address the damage, and Cesar had his friend Casey to thank for this unexpected relief. Casey, whom Cesar had met during his military service, now works for Southern Roofing and Renovations. The company collaborated with Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project and a foundation to provide new roofs for over 550 military members, a testament to their commitment to those who have served. 

This particular project was especially meaningful for Casey, as his own mother suffers from Multiple Sclerosis, mirroring Cesar's condition. For Casey, helping Cesar was not just a professional task but a deeply personal mission. Thanks to Casey's efforts and the project’s support, Cesar no longer needs to worry about his roof, allowing him to concentrate on his studies and personal goals. This act of kindness not only eased Cesar's immediate burden but also reinforced the bond of military friendship.
