A new home for the Maryland Terrapin football team

Learn how this project used Kingspan’s BENCHMARK Designwall Panels to build a new space for their football operations.

Established in 1856, the University of Maryland is known for being the biggest university in the state, boasting over 200 degree-granting programs. Outside of academics, the Maryland Terrapins are known for their performance in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I. Recently, their football team got a bold new home that features over 17,000 square feet of BENCHMARK Designwall 2000 and Designwall 4000 panels. Recently, the Metal Construction Association featured this project in their online collection of metal case studies.

In 2021, CannonDesign was brought in to design a new center for athletic performance and football operations for the team that would reflect their reputation. 

The answer? The Jones-Hill House. Located in the heart of the University of Maryland campus, the architects’ vision was for the Jones-Hill House to be an iconic building that made a statement for the Division 1 and Big 10 football team but would stay true to the historic nature of the original Cole Field House from which it was built.  

Kingspan’s BENCHMARK Designwall panels were recognized for their aesthetic nature and design appeal that allowed for creative flexibility throughout the project with a variety of finish and color options, trim-less ends, longitudinal and traverse bends and folded corners.  

BENCHMARK Designwall panels provide high thermal performance with an R-value of 14-21. The project was executed by Gilbane Building Company and Innovative Building Solutions. Being able to enclose the building quickly with these single-component panels was key to the project to avoid the elements and cut down labor costs by limiting the number of trades needed on site over the 6-year construction period.
