Back to brackets: Tried and true snow retention

Back to brackets: Tried and true snow retention

By Dani Sheehan.

When it comes to snow retention, the most powerful systems are often the most unassuming.

TRA Snow and Sun has long been a trusted expert in designing systems that protect roofs, property and people. They manufacture a variety of snow guards and snow rail systems that are tested, tried and proven by engineers and users to ensure they are the best quality they can offer. With so many different snow retention choices, many contractors are drawn to large, deck-mounted or rafter-mounted systems that look stronger. But the truth is that bracket-style systems are every bit as capable, and in many cases, more effective.

Small but mighty

Brackets were first discovered in Europe, and these systems have been used for snow retention for centuries. Builders started by placing large boulders or pieces of wood on the roof and eventually turned them into metal brackets. It’s a system that’s simple, but incredibly strong.

Unlike bar or fence-style systems that rely on a single row to act as a barrier, bracket systems distribute the load across the roof. Each bracket engages with the snowpack, helping it freeze in place and allowing it to melt safely. This prevents avalanches, protects gutters and penetrations and maintains the integrity of the roof without the visual clutter of a heavy bar system.

The leg of the bracket is installed beneath the roofing material, allowing the next course of shingles, metal or synthetic roofing to cover the fasteners completely. The result is a watertight installation that maintains the integrity of the system while providing reliable snow retention.

A system that fits every style

Bracket-based snow retention gives installers more flexibility on all styles and structures, from steep-slope residential projects to commercial metal roofs. These systems can be integrated seamlessly with a range of materials and profiles to maintain architectural appeal. And since most of the system is hidden beneath the roofing material, it maintains a consistent look across the project.

TRA Snow and Sun continues to refine and engineer snow retention systems that build on the European legacy of simplicity and strength. Their Snow Bracket™ systems are designed, tested and engineered for each specific roof to ensure long-term protection, performance and peace of mind.
