More than 70 National and Global Construction Firms Joined Forces to Promote Safety

The recent Construction Safety Week represents a show of force, an opportunity for people, companies, and even competitors, to work together and build a stronger, safer industry.

The Construction Industry Safety group, comprised of more than 70 national and global construction firms, and the Incident and Injury Free CEO (IIF) Forum have joined forces with a single aim: to inspire everyone in the industry to be leaders in safety.

The Construction Industry Safety Initiative (CISI) includes twelve major contractors who come together every other year for a two-day meeting to discuss only one thing – SAFETY. CISI holds a Safety Summit that includes over 30 major contractors in the United States. The CEO Forum is led by a group of senior construction industry leaders who are committed to sharing Incident and Injury-Free™(IIF™) safety best practices. They have met bi-annually since 2009 with the objective to both sustain and recreate their present IIF™ journeys while at the same time creating the possibility of an industry-wide safety transformation.

Construction Safety Week represents a show of force, an opportunity for people, companies, and even competitors, to work together and build a stronger, safer industry. Whether it’s through education and awareness activities, promotional events or monetary contributions, there are many ways you can participate, celebrate and show support. Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. observed Construction Safety Week 2019 with an awareness campaign highlighting member achievements in safety performance and their collective commitment to creating the conditions for all to do their work without incident and go home safe and healthy every day.  ABC has also published their 2019 Safety Performance Report demonstrating the effectiveness of the STEP safety management system and articles featuring member safety performance leaders. 

Among the headline events of the week, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) hosted its sixth annual National Safety Stand-down to Prevent Falls in Construction with events across the country to improve compliance and save lives. Although falls from heights decreased from 2016 to 2017 according to BLS data, falls are still the leading cause of death in the construction industry. 

Safety on construction sites and in the workplace were a hot topic at last year’s METALCON show and will likely be featured again as a session at METALCON 2019.
