Contractor donates $35,000 toward new roof of historic PA building

3Clovers Roofing and Construction donated the difference after a community fundraising effort fell short.

Mercersburg, PA-based 3Clovers Roofing and Construction Inc. submitted a bid for restoration of the historic farmhouse at Tayamentasachta Environmental Center and soon learned that the bid amount was more than the community had raised for the restoration.

“When their bid first came in, the roof and porch together were about $225,000,” Jolinda Wilson, the Greencastle-Antrim School District's chief financial officer told Herald-Mail in an interview. “We talked to them and said we simply could not do it because we haven't raised the funds.

“We said we can only afford to do the roof, and they agreed to donate the additional $35,000 to the project. So, we are going to do both, and it will be done this summer. It's amazing. We're very excited to get started.”

3Clovers Roofing and Construction company President Erik Davis is an alumnus of Greencastle-Antrim High School and told the Herald that he wants to see others benefit from the environmental center.

“This will be a full restoration of the building because, you can see, it needs a lot of love,” he said. “The building needs to be saved, and we want to be able to keep it here for future generations.”

The company’s Vice President, Kevin North, a former scoutmaster, said his Boy Scout Troop 99 have worked extensively at Tayamentasachta, and his son is also a graduate of the school. “It's a great experience and great place for people to learn, so we wanted to be able to make sure that opportunity is there for future generations. It's the right thing to do for educational purposes, but also for the community to be able to still use it,” he explained to the Herald.

According to the Herald, the work by 3Clovers will include a new roof with framing that will use period-correct materials. Chimneys will get repointing work, and gutters, facia and soffit will be replaced.

Shutters will be restored or replaced, and windows will be restored from the outside. The wrap-around porch will be rebuilt with a new roof, floor and steps.
