Cotney Construction Law Attorneys to Speak at 2020 NRCA Legal Conference

The National Roofing Contractors Association Virtual Legal Conference features nine legal, technical and business programs over three days this fall, October 13 – 15, 2020. 

NRCA is encouraging CEOs, owners, COOs, human resources professionals, safety directors, training directors, on-staff legal counsel, office managers and project managers to attend this year’s virtual legal conference: Roofing Issues – Decks to Dockets.  

Attendees will hear from legal and technical experts to learn about issues that will have an impact on their businesses. Four legal experts from Cotney Construction Law will share their expertise in the following sessions.  

Tuesday, Oct. 13 

10 - 11 a.m. - Navigating Crisis Management Post-COVID-19: How to Protect Your Business Amidst an Ongoing Uncertain Year  

Presented by Trent Cotney, CEO, Cotney Construction Law and NRCA Legal Counsel 

The pandemic has caused almost all major industries to evolve, but the roofing industry has found itself with the unique opportunity to navigate and innovate. During this program, Cotney will provide contractors with an overview of how to manage crisis during and after the COVID-19 pandemic and be successful moving forward. Topics include job-site protections, disaster preparedness and crisis prevention during COVID-19, including proper training, security protocols, handling of key personnel and other components of a successful crisis management plan. 

Wednesday, Oct. 14  

Noon – 1 p.m. – 5 Key Issues in a Residential Roofing Contracts 

Presented by Tray Batcher, Partner, and Trent Cotney, CEO, Cotney Construction Law  

During these challenging times, a contract can be a roofing contractor’s best friend because it contains terms to assist contractors in collecting money or defending claims. During this program, Cotney and Batcher will focus on contract formation and five important residential roofing contract provisions that roofing contractors and subcontractors should include in their contracts to protect their businesses. 

Thursday, Oct. 15 

10 - 11 a.m. - 5 Greatest Legal Challenges When Using Subcontractors on Projects 

Presented by Trent Cotney, CEO, Cotney Construction Law 

The worker shortage continues to be problematic as project demand increases and roofing contractors often rely on subcontractors to fulfill their workforce demands, which often brings about its own set of legal challenges. During this program, Cotney will provide insight on potential legal issues when using subcontractors on projects, including employee classification, reducing risk on a multi-employer worksite, limiting liability on defect claims, licensure of subcontractors and workers compensation. 

Noon - 1 p.m. - Legal Issues Surrounding Diversity in Roofing 

Presented by Jacqueline Feliciano, Managing Attorney, Tax Law Group, Cotney Construction Law and Roscoe Green, Partner, Cotney Construction Law 

The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts the U.S. labor force will continue to diversify through at least 2026, and the roofing industry is expected to respond as employers seek to hire an increasing number of women, minorities, Millennials and Gen Z workers to offset the retirement of its aging workforce. During this session, Feliciano and Green will delve into the legal issues surrounding diversity in roofing, including EEOC compliance, MBE/WBE status, integrating workforce issues, as well as hiring and maintaining a diverse working environment.
