Nancy Bunn “Bunny” Allen and Stephen Clifton have been together for over 40 years and are well-known in the community for their generosity. Over the years they’ve always been willing to lend a helping hand, including opening a cat rescue and helping friends with home repairs after Hurricane Sandy. But when the couple told their friends that they were having problems with their roof, they all banded together to return the favor.
For the last two years, the Clifton’s roof had been leaking pretty badly. On top of that, the couple has been facing health issues, with Stephen recovering from a heart attack and Bunny having recently been diagnosed with cancer. Upon learning about their roof problems, their neighbor and friend John Sutton decided to nominate them for East Coast Roofing, Siding & Windows’ annual roof giveaway.
John told The Press of Atlantic City, “They’ve always been offering to help everybody else. They’re still fighting though, they haven’t given up, so somebody’s got to help them.”
Every year, East Coast Roofing chooses one or two households to give free roofs to. The criteria for who receives roofs is people who give back to their community in incredible ways. Their owner Larry Stiteler was especially touched by the Clifton’s story as he has been recently diagnosed with cancer in January. “I believe our purpose in life is giving back, make the place better than it was when we came,” Larry said.
When asked how she felt about receiving their new roof, Bunny said she was flabbergasted and happy. “What they’re doing is such a gift,” she said.
