Essential Craftsman Episode Features TAMKO Heritage Premium Shingles in Stunning Roof Installation

Essential Craftsman demonstrates shingle application using TAMKO Heritage Premium Shingles.

In their recent video, Essential Craftsman went through the process of shingle application using TAMKO Heritage Premium Shingles on the complex roof of their Oregon spec house.

On their blog, TAMKO writes, “Both contractors and homeowners will find entertainment and education in Episode 78 and follow along as Scott Wadsworth and his son Nate move on to roofing their Oregon spec house that they have been documenting the construction of on their popular YouTube channel.”

In the episode, Scott explains the process of shingle application: “Shingles are old technology, about as old as technology can get. They have been used since the dawn of civilization and continue to be the simplest and most effective roofing system. The process of applying shingles is simple and repetitive, one layer goes on to the next covering the previous shingle’s line of nails. This process continues from the bottom of the roof up to the top.”

“Water flows downhill in the fastest, straightest route,” Scott explains. “If the roofing is properly installed, the water will roll right over the top of all the shingles never touching one of the nails or leaking through any exposed joint.”

The process of flashing, which the video covered next, is very similar to the process of shingle application. Both methods are applied in layers whereby the previous layer’s nails are covered by the next layer.

After installing the shingles and the flashing, the TAMKO Designer Ridge shingles were installed. These ridge caps are specifically designed to be used for the top ridge of the roof and come extra-thick and pre-shaped for the ridge. It is not ideal to simply bend a normal shingle over the ridge because shingles are designed to lay flat and they will wear quickly at the point of the bend.

“I could not be happier with these shingles,” Scott concluded after the shingles were installed.
