A recent article in The News Herald detailed how one community came together to replace the roof on Rev. Danny Townsend and his wife Michelle’s roof. Michelle has been battling cancer since 2010 when she was first diagnosed. After learning in April of this year that there were signs of the cancer having spread to her brain, she had to quit her job to undergo radiation treatment.
The Townsends were surprised when they saw two friends on ladders outside one day, measuring their roof. When they asked what they were doing the friends explained that they were going to replace the roof. The couple has been living under a 40-year old leaky roof with no money for a replacement.
According to The News Herald, 16 people showed up the first day to tear off the old roof and 25 people came the next day to help. Employees of CD Lowman Construction, members from Icard’s Grove Baptist Church, Connelly Springs First Baptist Church, and Oak Ridge Baptist Church, and neighbors, friends and family members worked for three days to remove and replace the roof.
Michelle told Barbara Jolly-Deakle at the News Herald that she really appreciates the new roof. “It’s so nice to come home and see the roof,” said Michelle. “Most people like to look at the flowers in the neighborhood, but we like to look at our new roof. I just want people to know how kind people are. God surprises us all the time with special things. This was so expensive and so needed. I am so grateful. I just want to thank all the people that were a part of it. I just can’t thank them enough. Thank you.”
