Fall roof tile maintenance checklist

Prepare your tile roof for falling leaves, cooler weather and seasonal storms with these essential maintenance steps.

Fall brings falling leaves, cooler evenings and the possibility of storms. According to an article by Eagle Roofing Products, taking care of a few important maintenance tasks now can help extend the life of your tile roof and protect your home throughout the season.

Trim trees around your home

Large trees with branches extending over your roof can create a hazard. If a branch breaks, it may damage the roof structure or eaves. Leaves, twigs, needles and small branches can also collect in roof valleys or clog gutters. Remove accumulated debris using proper safety equipment. Use extra caution whenever a ladder is required.

Schedule a professional roof inspection

Contact a licensed and bonded roofing contractor to perform a thorough inspection. The contractor should examine the roof, flashing, sealants, gutters and drainpipes. A roofing professional can also recommend repairs or replacement for broken tiles and other damaged roof components, as well as assess the condition of the attic.

Conduct periodic checkups

Every few months, check the structure for signs of insect or animal infestation. Warning signs may include sawdust, rotted areas and insect waste. Homes in areas prone to mold and moss may also require professional cleaning of the roof surface and affected underlying sections. Look for water stains in the attic and on interior walls. These stains may indicate small or large leaks that could cause extensive damage if left unaddressed.

Following these maintenance steps can help your tile roof reach its full potential while protecting your investment from changing weather conditions. If you notice a problem, contact a roofing professional promptly to complete the necessary repairs.
