In Port Charlotte, Florida, lives a man who served for twenty-two years as the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office. Brian Putman dedicated his life to helping others. At 50 years old, he is a loving husband and a wonderful father of three.
“Brian has stage 4 brain and bone cancer. His condition forced him to retire early from his position with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, where he was on the force for 22 years,” reports Fox News 4. Brian has been battling with chemotherapy and is so exhausted that he rarely leaves his house anymore.
If things weren’t bad enough, Brian and his family endured Hurricane Ian and the damage that it bestowed onto their house. Brian made several calls to different roofing companies, "People were like, ‘Yeah, we can do this – we can do that,’ but then it comes to financing," said Brian. "My finances took a hit because after I retired, I didn’t realize you had to go six months without a paycheck.”
But there was one roofing company who heard Brian’s story and knew they couldn’t just stand by. “Our conversation ended up being more than about roofs, I found out about what was going on in his world and his situation,” said Merinda Gabr with Vogel Roofing. “I felt very connected to him because both of my grandparents had cancer, they fought a long battle with cancer, it was really hard,” said Hannah Vogel with Vogel Roofing. “And I have an uncle in law enforcement too, so I think as a team and as a company, we’ve all been touched by him.”
Vogel Roofing went above and beyond getting a new roof for Brian. Rallying roofing suppliers, they managed to donate $50,000 for roof repairs. And when they discovered they were still short on costs, Vogel Roofing created a GoFundMe to help cover the rest.
Brian tells ABC 7 News “I just don’t have the words to extend my appreciation, especially with what I’ve gone through.”
