How Recycled Roof Tile Can Save Money and Reduce Waste

Recycling and repurposing old roof tiles offers homeowners and contractors a sustainable and economical solution to roof repair. 

In the world of roofing, every tile counts — especially if it's recycled. That was the topic of a recent episode of Roofing Road Trips, where Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with Jeff Littleton, Harrison Jarman and Kelly Connors from All Points Tile & Slate to talk about the benefits of tile recycling. 

Jeff, general manager of All Points Tile & Slate, shared how a shift in focus from selling new tiles to repurposing old ones during the 2008 economic downturn transformed their business: "We decided that we could be a much bigger player in reclaimed tile than we could with new tile," he explained. 

This shift was not only economically motivated but also has been able to help those who need materials but can’t afford a full reroof. As Kelly, administrative director, noted, "Even now since the hurricanes that we've had last year, we're contacted more by people who are looking to repair more so than replace the roof."   

All Points' approach potentially helps homeowners lower their insurance deductible by allowing them to sell excess tiles. Jeff pointed out that "if the insurance company doesn't have to re-roof every single roof in the state of Florida, they might not go out of business." This, coupled with Florida's updated builder code, promotes tile recycling as a viable, cost-effective option. 

Contractors also reap benefits from the company's buyback program and courtesy pickup service. As Tile Acquisitions Coordinator Harrison says, "We really do try our best to try and pick up all the different people that contact us trying to clean up their job site. And we sometimes have parameters to meet and can't meet them all, but we're only a phone call away to find out."  

Today in the world of roofing, every tile has a chance for a second life, saving people money and reducing waste.
