Liquid-applied systems bring flexibility to challenging roofs

Discover how seamless, fully adhered roofing systems can support complex designs and efficient installation.

Roofing contractors regularly face projects shaped by complicated layouts, aging substrates, limited budgets, and demanding schedules. Sika's Liquid Applied Roofing/Waterproofing Systems offer a versatile option designed to create a seamless, fully adhered waterproof barrier for new construction, restoration, reroof/recoat and waterproofing applications.

One unique property of the product is that the membrane is applied as a liquid. Because of this, it can conform to penetrations, curbs, equipment supports and irregular roof shapes before curing into a continuous layer. This adaptability helps contractors address difficult details without relying on the seams, laps and transitions common to many conventional systems.

Liquid-applied membranes can also provide an alternative to a complete tear-off. According to Sika, these systems can often be installed over existing substrates, including concrete, metal, modified bitumen, thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM). For building owners, restoration can extend the value of an existing roof while reducing the cost, disruption and time associated with a full roof replacement.

Seamless construction also eliminates many potential weak points created by joints and overlaps. A monolithic, fully adhered surface helps reduce the risk of water infiltration and limits lateral water migration if damage occurs.

Beyond traditional roof recovery, liquid-applied technology is a great solution for direct-to-substrate systems, insulated assemblies, plaza decks, terraces, balconies and vegetated roofs. Fast application, quick curing and the ability to complete complicated details without extensive fabrication are some of the major benefits to help crews work more efficiently.

Liquid-applied systems are not intended for every roofing assembly, but their flexibility gives contractors another way to meet the building owner's expectations. By adding restoration and waterproofing options to their capabilities, contractors can approach complex projects with a broader range of solutions.
