The University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee, faced a rainwater retention issue due to a lack of proper drainage on a critical power supply building on its campus. Understanding that it was imperative that the building remain operational, the nonprofit center was looking for a solution that would alert their facility management when the drains were not functioning properly. This would eliminate the need for their maintenance personnel to continually check the roof following rain events.
They turned to Tremco Roofing & Building Maintenance, part of the Tremco Construction Products Group, to help. Tremco recommended the Knovism SmartDrain™ rooftop sensors to monitor the drains around the clock. The system features SmartGateway™ software that ensures constant wireless communication between the SmartDrain sensors and the facility management team.
When the SmartDrain detects potential issues, alerts are sent to the facility manager’s mobile phone and computer in real time. Maintenance personnel now only have to make trips to the roof to address the drains when there is an actual issue to address and they know precisely which drain is having the issue.
Since installation, the facility management team has said that the Knovi system has notified their team several times during severe weather that the internal drains were not functioning properly and were retaining excessive water. This has prevented leaks and potential damage to the building and the power supply equipment inside.
