New Groundbreaking Book Encourages Aspiring African American Lawyers

This “mentorship in a book” provides helpful insights from 55 black lawyers of all types of professional backgrounds. 

Suntrease Williams-Maynard, a Special Counsel at Adams and Reese, has contributed to the groundbreaking book "Lessons from Successful African American Lawyers: Practical Wisdom for Those on the Path to Lawyerhood" (Volume I). The book features insightful accounts of the individual experiences and journeys of successful African American lawyers, both in their personal and professional lives. The book has also received acclaim for its empowering content and showcases personal and professional profiles and essential lessons learned from 55 successful Black lawyers from across the United States. It serves as a valuable mentorship resource, featuring legal professionals who graduated from law schools over the past several decades, with diverse career paths and educational backgrounds. 

As stated in the book’s official description: “This significant book represents a genuine labor of love and a united collective effort of Black lawyers who are all different but share a common, strong sense of social responsibility and a deep desire to help other Black people interested in becoming lawyers.”  

Lessons from Successful African American Lawyers was created to inspire and encourage more Black students interested in the challenges and opportunities presented by pursuing their legal education. Mitchell, Esq., Ed.M., whose previously published works include The African American Pre-Law School Advice Guide, Profiles & Essays of Successful African American Law School Applicants, The African American Law School Survival Guide, among others, has helped thousands of Black people across the country with law school aspirations better understand what it takes to get into law school and succeed while there.
