New York family receives new roof, easing stress during daughter's cancer battle

A gifted roof replacement brings relief for the Fietkiewicz family amid their struggle of juggling medical bills and daily challenges while their daughter receives critical care. 

For over a year, the Fietkiewicz family has been battling mounting medical bills and the emotionally heavy task of caring for their daughter, Zara, who was diagnosed with cancer when she was only three-years-old. As their world was turned upside down by medical expenses and the daily challenges of caring for Zara and her twin sister, the deteriorating roof over their home had to be put on the back burner. 

With life on a single income, Liz and Josh Fietkiewicz found themselves prioritizing Zara's health and staying afloat financially over everything else. The roof was leaking, but they couldn’t afford to replace it. Liz shared, “We were saving our money and we were going to have it done and then this happened. It's just been a lot of expenses for her health care." 

In a stroke of luck and much-needed relief, the Fietkiewicz family entered a contest hosted by CNY Central and The Roofing Guys to win a roof replacement — and they won! The family was overwhelmed with gratitude when they received the call informing them they had won the contest. Suddenly, the leaky roof was no longer a concern. The Roofing Guys stepped in to take care of the replacement, alleviating a significant stressor during an already challenging time. 

With the new roof in place, the Fietkiewicz family can now focus on what matters most: Zara’s care. As of August 29, 2024, Zara continues her chemotherapy treatments and while the road ahead remains long, the family no longer has to worry about their roof. 

Their story is a reminder of how a simple act of kindness can make a world of difference in times of hardship. Thanks to The Roofing Guys, the Fietkiewicz family is able to continue their fight against cancer with a little more peace of mind.
