North Carolina Disabled Woman Gifted with New Roof for the Holiday

She is now able to stay in the home where she provides care for her autistic nieces.  

Pam Smith, a homeowner in Fletcher, North Carolina, was the recipient of a free roof, just in time for the holidays thanks to Ridge Roofing. Company owner Alex Savely told WLOS ABC 13 News, "Just the condition of the roof; I could tell that it was a very stressful situation."  

Pam is disabled and also serves as the primary caregiver for two of her nieces who have autism. The roof suffered damage two years ago after a tree fell into the house during a storm. Pam didn’t have the nearly $10,000 needed to make repairs so they just lived with the damage.  

"It means everything," Smith told ABC 13. "It means literally keeping a roof over our heads because if we weren't able to get the roof fixed, the house wouldn't have been livable. It is an amazing, amazing gift. We could never do this."  

Alex was named ABC 13’s person of the week for his kindness and willingness to donate the roof to Pam. He shared with WLOS, “Well, the first thing that struck a chord with me is that she looks after two autistic people. And I have autism in my family, too: my nephew. And I know that it's a whole new set of challenges." 

Alex shared that he was in the neighborhood performing work on another roof when the homeowner mentioned Pam’s situation. Pam said that Alex was giving her an estimate, but when he became aware of her situation he said he was going to do her roof for free. He said that he had been thinking about giving someone in need a free roof every year. "I heard her story and thought she was an awesome lady and that she needed a roof," he said. 

Other businesses in the community came together to provide donations including Lowe’s, AAC Building Materials and Griffin Waster. Pam said the roof has been a blessing, taking a huge weight off of her shoulders.
