Orlando Commissioner Assembles Community to Renovate 93-year-old's Home

After a year of isolation in the pandemic made this senior’s home unlivable, the commissioner and community found a way to give back and improve her quality of life.  

The owner of the Parramore home in Orlando, who wishes to remain anonymous, has lived in isolation throughout the pandemic, with her cats as her only companions.  

“During the pandemic, due to the shutdown, not having anyone really there to check on her and assist her, her home has fallen into despair,” Orlando City Commissioner Regina Hill told Click Orlando. The 93-year-old resident's home has visible roof damage inside the home, and the damage to her roof has created unhealthy living conditions. “Her roof has been long-term defective in a sense, but the inside right now isn’t livable.” 

Upon learning about the state of the home from another resident, Regina immediately set up the senior in a short-term nursing facility and worked to figure out how to fix the roof. “I started to galvanize community partners to see what we can do to offset the costs something like this would cost,” Regina said. 

That’s when Regina found Amazing Roofers. The company is donating $15,000 for a new roof, the co-owner Miguel Alvarenga, says, “It feels very good.” It is how they are giving back through these unprecedented times. “That’s the reason why we’re here. It’s a nice thing to do,” Miguel told Orlando Click. 

Christina Selamaj with Amazing Roofers added, "Everyone is being challenged right now, especially with COVID. So just having the opportunity to show as a company we’re here to help and be able to donate a roof and just work together and get it done to help our homeowners, our people in the community, it’s just amazing to us.” 

Volunteers also have worked to store the resident’s belonging safely while they fully clean the house and do renovations, like installing new kitchen appliances and plumbing. 

Regina says of the senior citizen and long-time educator, “She’s given so much to others as an educator and we want to make sure that she has a quality life.”
