When thinking of what technologies are going to be hot in construction, prefabrication probably isn’t one that comes to mind. Not when you’ve got really cool things like drones, 3D printing and virtual reality coming into play. So, when reading this article on the website Connect & Construct, I was a little surprised to see prefabrication listed as one to watch in 2018.

But when you think about it, it makes sense. Just because a technology has been around for a long time doesn’t mean that it won’t re-emerge to address a new issue. Prefabrication has been used in various applications for many years, but new technologies are making it easier to access and changing the way many contractors are integrating prefabricated products into their processes.

We are seeing contractors looking for creative ways to overcome the labor shortage and help their crews work more efficiently. Many are turning to prefabrication. Think about the amount of time it takes to fabricate a single-ply flashing in the field in the best of conditions. Add wind, heat or cold to the equation and that adds time and can compromise quality. With a prefabricated cone, the worker simply puts it in place and welds it, reducing the amount of time they are spending on flashing.

With more efficient crews who are able to get more done in a day without adding additional labor, contractors are finding that their jobs are actually more profitable.
