Roofer Tricks Woman Into Accepting Free Roof Repair

A company raffle grants a grandmother of four with a new roof.

The roof on Jeanette MacDonald’s home in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia continued to deteriorate.  Jeremy Locke, the owner of Locke’s Roofing and Construction, noticed her roof and knew she needed a new one.  For a while he believed the roof had been partially repaired and the company would return to finish.  However, as months continued to pass by, and the roof continued to worsen, Jeremy knew something needed to be done.

“I had it in my mind that if no one steps up to help this lady in our community, I’d be more than happy to,” Jeremy told CBC.  He approached Jeanette about fixing her roof for free, however, “she politely declined his offer because she did not like to accept charity,” as mentioned by the Good News Network.  She had applied for a government grant to fix her roof.  And once the application approval came in, she said she would hire Jeremy to complete the repair.  Sadly, the application never got approved.

That being said, Jeremey was determined to find a way to help this grandmother of four.  “Businesses often run raffles and draws for free items so I told Jeanette that our company was going to have a raffle, or a draw, for a free roof,” Jeremy explained.  He invited Jeanette to enter the raffle. “Once she agreed, I told her not to worry about it, that she had already won,” Jeremy shared. Jeanette was the only one to enter the raffle.

Soon after, the materials were dropped off and Jeremy and his crew of four employees donated their time to re-roof her home.  This project saved Jeanette nearly $9,000.  

Having been raised by his grandparents, Jeremy shared that Jeanette’s situation affected him.  “She reminded me of my grandmother,” he said. Thanks to Jeremy’s scheme, Jeanette and her four grandsons, will have a safe, new roof to sleep under.  Jeanette expressed her gratitude for Jeremy, saying, “A guardian angel, I’m telling you. There’s nobody out there like him.”
