With millions of parents and children staying at home, working from home, schooling at home, it can get stressful. One of the best ways to reduce stress and keep children calm is coloring! Lori Lite, a parenting stress expert and author, writes that “the back and forth motion of the crayon on the paper is soothing.”
It also helps them to focus, tune out the rest of the noisy world and the colors they choose can affect their emotions. “Some colors evoke a relaxation response while others motivate. A child can go from sad to glad within minutes of coloring by choosing mood changing happy colors,” write Lite.
SRS wanted to provide an activity that would help families get through this trying time and recognize the artists at the same time. The company provided a file for printing that featured a Home Sweet Home theme showing a happy family with their pet cat.
They had 41 submissions and the most liked picture was submitted by Jeannine Plasencia and colored by 5-year-old Jaylin. For having the most likes, Jaylin wins an art kit and an Amazon Alexa!
SRS Distribution shared on Facebook, “We are so impressed with the masterpieces submitted for our SRS Fun with Family Coloring Contest! Thank you all for participating and having fun with us. Your children’s artwork brightened our day with each post.”
While this contest was meant for children, parents might want to try their hand at coloring to help ease stress. The Cleveland Clinic’s Scott M. Bea, Psy.D. says, “Adult coloring requires modest attention focused outside of self-awareness. It is a simple activity that takes us outside ourselves. In the same way, cutting the lawn, knitting, or taking a Sunday drive can all be relaxing.”
A study by a researcher at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) found that “after coloring for 20 minutes participants reported being more contented, more energetic and calmer than after reading.
