A roof’s strength depends on more than the shingles homeowners can see from the curb. Beneath the color, profile and overall design, the adhesive that bonds shingles together plays a critical role in how well a roofing system stands up to weather over time. Malarkey Roofing Products® credits its rubberized adhesive as a key part of that performance. Designed as a roofing shingle sealant strip, the adhesive helps secure shingles and bond them to the roof. While many homeowners focus first on style or color, Malarkey emphasizes the sealant as a hidden but important layer of protection against wind, rain and long-term wear.
Standard shingles often rely on basic asphalt-based adhesive. According to Malarkey, that type of adhesive can become brittle, dry out and lose grip over time. When the bond weakens, shingles may delaminate or lift during high winds, creating opportunities for wind-blown rain to get underneath the roof covering.
Malarkey’s adhesive is chemically rubberized with Styrene-Ethylene-Butylene-Styrene (SEBS) polymers. This formula combines high-grade asphalt with polymers to create a more aggressive grip between shingle layers and the roof deck. It also adds rubber-like elongation, allowing the adhesive to expand and contract as temperatures change.
That flexibility is intended to help prevent thermal dry-out, which Malarkey identifies as a common reason standard seals fail. The adhesive remains flexible down to 0 degrees Fahrenheit, helping shingle seals stay intact through freeze-and-thaw cycles.
Malarkey also uses more adhesive bonds in several of its architectural shingles, including Highlander®, Vista® and Legacy®. These shingles include up to 50% more adhesive bonds than standard shingles, with six roofing shingle sealant bonds on architectural shingles and eight on designer shingles to help resist delamination, moisture and wind uplift. And the result is a roofing system designed for all-weather resilience and protection against winds up to 130 mph.
