Sustainable and Responsible Building for the Future

It’s no secret that contracting and the construction industry are a big contributor to carbon emissions. In fact, it is estimated that upwards of 39% of CO2 emissions are caused by the building industry. More green initiatives are going to be necessary to cut down on that number, and more construction companies are going to need to participate in green trends. Luckily, SOPREMA is one of the companies that is taking the lead on these environmentally friendly efforts. A representative from the company, Jeff Moore, sat down with Heidi J. Ellsworth to discuss these efforts on a recent episode of RLW. 

One of the initiatives that SOPREMA is taking, is changing the blowing agent that they are using in their commercial roofing installations. The agent that SOPREMA is advocating for is called “HFO” and it is a much greener and environmentally stable option than another agent called “HFC.” Jeff Moore of SOPREMA, told the host that HFC is 1,400 times more detrimental to the environment than HFO. Unfortunately, HFO is still only regulated in a few states, but SOPREMA has decided to completely abandon HFC in favor of the more environmentally conscious option. What’s also so amazing about the HFO option is that it is made out of 70% recycled materials. SOPREMA wants to get to the point where almost all of their materials are recycled in one way or another. Jeff says, “We want to get to a place to where material can be reused or recycled in some manner and diverted from landfill.” 

The name of the game is reducing carbon emissions, and Jeff thinks that our country will start to take greater note of the environmental impact that the emissions have. He said, “We're going to just continue to see more municipalities and cities pass ordinances, and people are going to want to keep up... so, it's here to stay.”
