Tennessee Community Comes Together for Local Teacher

When a  teacher’s roof began to deteriorate, it was the community that reached out to build it back together. 

Fifth-grade teacher Sheila Ford has been an important member within the Frayser, Tennessee community for more than two decades now. Her students, who often visit her years after being one of her students, say her zest for life breathes energy into the Frayser community. 

Sheila lives within walking distance to her school, and her roof’s deterioration became more and more noticeable to surrounding community members.  

“I was in need of a new roof,” Sheila admitted to WATN-TV reporter Brittani Moncrease. “It was damage over time. I have trees around my house.” 

Word of Sheila’s roof spread through the tight-knit community and it wasn’t long before Restoration Roofing came into the know. The local company had recently joined an initiative called Roofs for Teachers and knew immediately that Sheila was a more-than-deserving recipient for a free roof. 

“I had a previous customer who told me about Ms. Ford,” said Brent Simmons, Restoration Roofing Owner and Roofing Insight Co-Host. “I had a feeling before I even met her that this was going to be the person. I saw how nice and bubbly she was and was like, look no more.” 

Restoration Roofing quickly went to work on Sheila’s roof, which had yet to receive any TLC since Sheila first moved to Frayser over 20 years ago. Restoration Roofing found that Sheila’s house had three layers of shingles instead of the recommended amount of two.  

Teachers are the foundation for education and play a crucial role in communities. Restoration Roofing recognizes this and was happy to give what they could to a teacher who has done so much for her community. 

“That’s the whole point of what we’re doing and why it’s focused on teachers - because they play such a huge part, a huge role in the community and the development of children,” said Brent. 

Sheila felt grateful for Restoration Roofing and the overwhelming support she received from her community.  

“They’re thinking about teachers. That was so refreshing,” said Shelia. “The community is everything. This is where we find safety. This is where we find friendships and love in our communities.”
