The multifaceted rungs of a career in roofing

With a variety of roles related to the industry, hear one employee’s admiration for her company, the work she does and the people she interacts with. 

She’s never appreciated a roofer more than the opportunity of having to stand on the roof and have them say, now swing your legs over and climb back down that ladder. In her current role as NER regional dispatcher and fleet administrator with Weatherproofing Technologies Incorporated (WTI), Kristin Crandall wears many hats – and she loves each one. We recently sat down with her to learn more about the professional opportunities available in roofing that don’t involve climbing up onto a roof and to celebrate this incredible industry. 

Kristin firmly believes that there is always more to learn, and she feels that WTI consistently challenges her and allows her to grow by adding skills to her toolbox. Dispatching for patch and repair and now also handling the company vehicles across the fleet of the country, she shares, “I love what I’m doing and it has involved me even more because I was dispatching for the guys to go on the roof and learning the customer, but now I can also help in keeping the guys ‘safe’ and getting them home to their families at night because I am the one that’s helping to procure the vehicles. I’m making sure there are safety features added and GPS systems installed, etc.” 

If she had to decide her favorite part of the job, she says it would be the people she gets to work and interact with. She explains, “I love working with technicians. I love helping them make their jobs easier. I like being a sounding board for them, somebody they can come to and always know that they’re going to be helped. But I also love interacting with customers and making them happy... I like that interaction where you get to build relationships.” 

She feels that her supervisors, the company culture at WTI and the people she interacts with every day make her job more enjoyable, but it’s also because of the people that she is proud to work in the roofing industry. She shares, “My appreciation for these men and women that get on a roof every day is insane... People are quick to think residential – you're just doing shingles on a house. But it’s not like that. There’s a vegetation roof that we’ve done, we’ve made gardens on roofs, which is crazy to me, but it’s amazing. And I think of the hospitals and making sure that the roof is not leaking while someone is doing surgery.” 

No matter what your role is in this industry, you are contributing to the safety and comfort of buildings and communities. For Kristin, her passion for her job and for roofing is palpable. When you join WTI, you’re not just starting a career; you’re becoming part of the family.
