Understanding and Obtaining Energy Objectives in Building Assessments

Although a little convoluted sometimes, it’s extremely important to understand your state’s energy level requirements. On this month’s Lunch and Learn, host Heidi J. Ellsworth checks in with Tremco’s Josh Houk to discuss how to obtain those energy objectives.  

Your network in roofing is so important, and having colleagues and peers who know about things you might not be an expert in can be exponentially beneficial for your career. This can reign especially true with topics like energy codes. “Google's your best friend, but it can also take the longest to find something,” says Josh. “So if you do have one of those energy engineering type partners, those folks are going to know for certain what those local regulations are going to be.”  

Getting to know your regions ENERGY STAR® scores is also something vital to know about. “If you do operate in a market like New York, you're going to find language around their ENERGY STAR score,” says Josh. “The New York City collective put together what they call their Local Law, I believe it was 94, 95 that actually set up. So if you type in New York City ENERGY STAR score, they have a whole list of criteria laid out for you. Some states are really trying to achieve passive house. Some states have drawn up their own objectives. So you may need to go to a government website. Oftentimes, you'll find a department of environmental concerns or justice or something of that nature. That's usually the language a lot of these folks use.” It's essential to stay up to date with your region's specific objectives and criteria to make informed decisions and obtain the energy objectives.
