In 1965, the high-rise office building at 500 Pacific Avenue in Bremerton, Washington was built and secure at the time. But over the last 50+ years, its facade had worn down to the point where it was unsafe to be in and around the building. Mold was growing, balconies were corroded, even a stone the size of a baseball had fallen off an exterior wall onto the ground below.
Applied Restoration Inc. (ARI) was hired for the massive restoration task and sought out only the best materials for the project. ARI used multiple Tremco products to seal and waterproof different parts of the building. They began the building restoration in February 2018 and successfully finished the project within 10 months.
To restore the balconies, ARI used Tremco’s Vulkem® EWS Pedestrian Coating System to coat the concrete. The product utilizes polyurethane-methacrylate (PUMA) technology which allows for fast-curing times. Within an hour of application, the balcony could be safely walked on by pedestrians and the concrete was protected from weather and harmful chemicals.
Dryvit, a part of the Tremco Construction Products Group, materials were used on the building’s exterior to prevent moisture infiltration, seal and protect the exterior, and give it a fresh, modern look. Fedderlite continuous insulation panels were installed without having to remove the existing cladding, which achieved all of the performance goals while minimizing occupant disruption.
Once completed, the overall restoration was deemed a success. The office building was not only transformed aesthetically, but it was made waterproof, more energy efficient, and safe for those inside and outside it. The project even won the 2019 Project of the Year award from the Northwest Wall and Ceiling Bureau in their Exterior Renovation Commercial category.
