Homeless Man, Who Handed Out Resumes, Gets Hired By Roofing Company I knew I liked those guys at JB Wholesale! They are located in Southern California and I have been there many times. Good for JB and their customer Jack the Roofer for giving the guy a chance. Not a handout, an opportunity – Nice! http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2012/09/06/homeless-man-who-handed-out-resumes-gets-hired-by-roofing-company/
Why thats my good buddy Frankie. I think he moved to Montana with Dynamo.
Gives the harness bells a shake. It does.
I have found some people who work hard but not well and I have found other people who work well but not hard. I agree with the "work smart, not hard" aphorism except for the the part about not working hard. I don't want nice guys who are weak and I don't want tough guys who are mean. I've found people who are good at roofing but don't like it. I've found people who like roofing but are no good at it. Every so often there is a decent fit and once in awhile a great one. It could come from anywhere, I never know. You want someone who sees it as coming home. I could never imagine going home to my onramp. Maybe it's a high you get standing against the steady stream of people lunging into action, the wind whistling in your hair, visions of faraway places in the shimmering distance...
Sleeping under a bridge, maybe...
I'm tearing off a two-layer dome tomorrow, four months from qualifying for Medicare, waiting for some new glasses, ready to go. By tomorrow night sleeping under a bridge might sound flat-out delicious. Pleasure is pleasure. But wadoino.
I do know this: in the end it's all about being awake. I forget who said it but it went like this: I wake from sleep and take my waking slow; learn from going where I need to go. Some of us need a second chance but most of us need more.
wywoody Said: Give a man a rod and reel and you teach a man to find a pawn shop specializing in sporting goods.
As sadly true as that may be, I... L O L'd
Well said Rocky & Tico.
I won't give a man the money to buy another bottle, but I'll gladly buy him a fish and eat with him, and even more gladly put a rod & reel in his hand if he's willing to learn how to fish.
Lockheed, Boeing, Gm, GE, Microsoft and the likes of them, they need engineer type people. You won't find to many of them on the corner nor homeless. Most of those companies give in other ways. Granted, we might not agree with how they do it and alot of it might be slight of hand. We on the other hand, are the ones who are in the trenches, elbows and asses. we meet our brethern on the that corner daily and have more compassion for the individual than our corporate counterparts. I do like Mike said and hand out cards and tell them to call me. One woman sent her husband to me a few years ago. we hired him but since has moved on. Maybe another corner. Many don't won't a job, Boeing or roofing. That guy handing out his resume was the exception not the norm. I would have considering hiring him if he had approached me...... and he paased employment guidlines(e-verify)
Alba, looks like you are holding our trade in lower esteem. I would haven't even thought like that. I was just giving props to a company that was willing to give a man a chance. It doesn't matter what the company. Sheesh.
These people ought to start somewhere but why should be the roofers giving them a chance.we don't see lockheed martin, boeing , Gm or GE people going to homeless shelters to recruit employees.why should we hold our trade in lower esteem ?while roofing as a technology is not hard to learn it requires a lot of integrity, character , physical and emotional stamina .qualities that not too many people out there have.
There's one guy that confessed he averages better than $20/hr.........
He want's to be a roofer, uhuh. LOL
Both me, and my Supt, will hand out a business card to someone panhandling at the freeway exits, or whatever... even try to strike a conversation if the light just turned red.
Never had one come back.
