If this guy hadn't sent you any work in a year(and now out of the business) and the prospects don't look good with the son, why would you decide to do something at cost for this guy? It has to be reciprocal BEFORE you make these decisions and they can't be of this magnitude. Unless he's going to build your new house for costs. What were you looking for? a mere "thank you". In this economy? You must have tons of work to be able to do thank you jobs. Was there at least a carrot(future work) dangling out there? I don't mean to rip you but it was a bad business decision, even in a good economy, unless you're bartering. Then he still owes you.. I agree with Tico and Alba. and twill makes alot of cents, spelled the other way.

I totally understand...We do freebies every now & then....But it''s typically for the elderly/hardship cases.

Had an old fella, who I fell for the sob-story, just a couple of months ago, who, subsequently, called up and said he was "getting bids", after we had an agreement, (I had provided him a price based on 1/2 the shingles coming form my yard, at no costs, as well as charging only direct labor costs only. It was actually COSTING me money to have my guys haul the shingles from our yard to his place).

I wanted to say; Well, piss on you....But I didn't, we just put his roof on anyway. He never made mention or thanked us, for saving him $5,000 +/-. :)

Figuring out the psychology is at least as hard as doing the job. But after all is said and done it's probably the most important part. Can't know what's going on from here; lots of different ways to figure it. Some people just don't do grateful and can't.
