Had to replace 8 slate on a church steeple 80' up on Thursday. I had a boom truck with bucket lined up. Well, it showed up... It was a 2'x3' bucket and they attached by a Tether strap on the end of the hook. (I've always had a boom with the bucket fastened directly to the boom in past jobs) Talk about tough working conditions! Baaaaccck & foooorrrth, tooooo & frroooo, spin around & then unwind. It took me over 2 hours to replace those 8 slate. I had about 20 slate, 2 slate cutters, 2 rippers, tool belt in there with me - talk about crowded conditions. They were 12"x24" scolloped slate on the steeple and it was a challenge just to find the room to cut the corners off the slate.

My heart was pounding out ot my chest for the rest of the day.

Hey Old School - more power to you, lol. A suspended basket was bad enough for me. How in the world would you use a bosuns chair for a slate repair with all the material/equipment that I mentioned above?

Chuck, the tether was the same as a tow strap (2", or more, wide strap with loops at both ends). They put one loop on the crane's hook, down through the basket's eye hook, and then back up to the crane's hook.

One of my dream adventures is to Para-glide the Swiss Alps. If I am deployed to Reno I will do my first tandem flight. What you described sounds like you are on your way with out the lessons.
