9 OSHA Safety And Health Regulations for the Construction Industry

OSHA was enacted to provide on-the-job safety and health conditions for employees.

The construction industry has specific conditions that are necessary for all construction industry employers to comply with. This article is a brief overview of regulations all construction employers must be aware of.

1. Confined space standards (per 29 CRF 1926.21(b)(6) for the construction industry are not as specific as the general industry standard. The construction industry should refer to the general industry standard ( per 1910.146).

2. The construction industry standard for fall protection is very detailed. Fall protection (per 1926 Subpart M) is required when construction personnel are working at heights greater (or equal to ) 6 ft.

3. There should be training for employees using stairways and ladders (per 1926.1060).

4. All fire extinguishers that are at least 2A rating must be provided every 3000 square feet (1926.151).

5. Ground Fault-Circuit Interrupters are required on 120-volt outlets at construction sites that are used by workers and are not part of permanent wiring (per 1923.404(b)(1)(iii)).

6. There must be an eyewash and body-flushing facility within 25 feet of a battery charging area (per 1926.441).  

7. Standards in personal protective equipment are close to the general industry standards, but construction industry standards also include requirements on body belts, lifelines and lanyards, safety nets, and work that takes place over water.

8. Construction sites require at least 5 foot candles for general lighting in construction areas (per 1926.56).

9. Construction sites are required to have a accident-prevention sign or tag visible at all times when work is performed; signs must be removed/ covered when the hazard no longer exists.
