A new era of roofing education

A new era of roofing education
November 18, 2025 at 3:00 p.m.

By International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC).

This new series turns complex roofing concepts into concise courses that support credentialing and continuing education.

The International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC) is a global nonprofit association dedicated to advancing the industries of roofing, waterproofing and exterior walls and the professionals within each segment. With more than 3,600 members worldwide, IIBEC provides unbiased expertise in design, repair planning, quality assurance and overall building enclosure management.

A new chapter in roofing education is taking shape as IIBEC partners with consultant Elizabeth Grant, PhD, RA, to develop the Roofing Practice Series. Supported by a dedicated volunteer task force, the project is designed to give building enclosure professionals a more flexible and accessible path to strengthening technical roofing knowledge.

Instead of relying on the traditional Roof Technology & Science I and II format, IIBEC has reorganized that material into eight shorter courses that participants can take individually or as a complete sequence. Each module delivers three concentrated hours of instruction, and the first course, “Roof Assemblies: Fundamentals,” launches December 3, 2025, introducing a redesigned learning experience centered on roofing systems and building performance.

Each course strengthens the technical foundation for those seeking IIBEC credentials and continuing education hours (CEHs), whether you’re an emerging professional or a seasoned expert.

Roof Assemblies: Fundamentals is the first course in the Roofing Practice Series, offering a solid introduction to essential concepts in roofing design, performance and systems.

At the end of this educational activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Summarize the history and evolution of roofing practices.
  • Recognize key roofing terms and describe common roofing assemblies and their components.
  • Explain mechanisms of water and vapor movement and heat transfer in roofs and their applications to building materials and assemblies.
  • Relate how design strategies and roof component choices protect buildings from water and moisture issues, affect heat loss and heat gain and consequently impact code compliance, cost, comfort and climate resilience.
