In an episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Megan Ellsworth sat down with Dean Curtis of Ingage to discuss the evolving communication methods used by four generations working together in the home improvement industry. Dean, who has experience working at companies like Oracle and Apple, noticed a growing communication gap and decided to address the issue and outline different strategies to help everyone communicate better.
Dean explained that as technology evolves, each generation develops its own preferred methods of communication. This generational divide can make it challenging to determine the best communication platform, as preferences differ based on speed, formality and the tools each group favors.
Dean explained that several factors must be considered when determining which method is best for each situation. First and foremost, understanding the purpose of communication is vital: “What's the purpose? Why am I communicating? Is it to inform? Is it to ask? Is it to just connect?”
Dean pointed out that the complexity of the message is another key consideration. He explained, "If it's just simple informing, a text message might be perfect. If it's educating someone on a topic, maybe you have to go a little above and beyond.”
The urgency of the message also plays a significant role in deciding the best platform. Dean said, “How quickly do I need [a response]? What do you check faster, your text messages or your email?”
Finally, understanding the audience is important. Dean said, “Knowing your audience is important for effective communication.” Tailoring the message to the preferences and expectations of the recipient can make all the difference.
