DIY Tap and Die Drain Post Cleaner

Instead of buying an expensive tap and die set, make your own!

Roof drain posts can get clogged and dirty over time, which means they need to be cleaned occasionally.  Typically a tap and die set, used to clean roof drain posts, is expensive and bulky. Corey Johnston, Tremco Roofing Contractor Support Specialist, has a solution for contractors who don’t want to spend a lot of money on a tap and die set and who also don’t want to worry about themselves or their workers accidentally dropping the supplies down the drain.  Literally.  

In this video from the Contractor Corner by Corey series, Corey shares how to make your own tap and die drain post cleaner using only a few supplies.  Corey explains, “...All you need to make your own die to clean posts is a C clamp, a stainless steel nut, a grinder with cutting wheel, some two-part epoxy.”    

Corey demonstrates just how easy it is to make your own tap and die set.  And it will only take a few minutes! Corey mentions a way to save even more time, sharing that if a welder happens to be on the job site, he or she would be able to do a quick spot weld.  This would take less time than using the two-part epoxy and waiting for it to dry.

He comments, “If your labor happens to drop one down the drain, it’s not the end of the world.  You can leave your expensive tap and die set at home and use one of these tools to clean those dirty drain posts.”
