Estimating for everyone

This new training course crosses language barriers by bringing John Kenney’s estimating training into Spanish.

If you’ve been around the roofing industry, you’ve probably heard of John Kenney. The CEO of Cotney Consulting Group and an avid activist for the industry as a whole, John is truly a leader in our community. He continually gives back in a variety of ways, including sharing his 45+ years of experience and knowledge through training sessions. One highlight of his training offerings is his estimating workshops, which teach contractors the skills to master accurate costing and bidding. Recently, he stopped by The Coffee Shops™ for a Roofing Road Trips® episode about the launch of his estimating courses, in Spanish!

This specialized training is offered virtually and specifically designed for the Latinx roofing workforce. John shared a bit about the creation of this offering, saying, “What this is geared for is for the foreman crew leader out running a job that's in their native language. To help them.” One of the main things they had to navigate for the creation of the course was the language barrier. John explained, “The big challenge was to get this into the native language, which it is, but to have it also make sense because that's where a lot of times the communication gets lost. Between English and Spanish, in the roofing industry, there are just some words don't exist.”

But John and the Cotney Consulting team worked hard and overcame that challenge to create the Virtual Spanish Estimating Training. This helps participants learn about how to lay jobs out; track their materials, hours and production rates; and truly understand how estimating works. John elaborated, “It's going to walk them through that whole entire process, which I think is going to make someone in the field so much better at what their job is and give them empowerment. The whole goal is to give them empowerment and it's easier for them to learn in the native language.”
