As building codes tighten and facility requirements become more complex, many designers are facing complications as they try to accommodate insulation needs with fire resistance required minimums. In the latest episode of MetalCast™, Karen Edwards sat down with Brian Ng, vice president of engineering for All Weather Insulated Panels, to discuss the growing demand for fire-rated insulated metal panels and how product innovation is helping contractors meet evolving project requirements.
Brian explained that insulated metal panels combine two steel facings with a foam-insulated core, creating an "aesthetically pleasing single unit with metal and insulation combined as one product." The system delivers both enclosure and insulation in a single assembly, a feature that continues to gain attention as metal construction expands across multiple market sectors.
According to Brian, several factors are driving demand for enhanced fire performance. "You have building codes that are getting stricter over the years," he said. At the same time, facilities such as distribution centers, cold storage buildings, food processing plants and data centers are becoming more common, creating additional focus on fire protection strategies.
One challenge the industry has historically faced is balancing thermal performance with fire resistance. As Brian explained, "For some time we had to choose between one or the other." Designers often had to sacrifice insulation performance or add supplemental materials to achieve required fire ratings.
That challenge helped shape the development of All Weather Insulated Panels' DM40 F Plus system, which combines a one-hour fire-rated assembly with thermal performance in a single product. Brian noted that this approach creates a much cleaner specification while simplifying installation and reducing the number of materials contractors must coordinate on a project.
Understanding the significance of a one-hour fire rating is critical for building teams as well. Brian explained that the rating indicates a wall assembly's ability to resist fire and heat transfer, helping limit fire spread and providing valuable time for emergency response efforts.
As larger and more specialized facilities continue to emerge, solutions that address both energy performance and fire safety are becoming increasingly important components of modern building design.
To contractors, architects and building owners, that evolving demand signals a broader shift: performance expectations are no longer viewed as tradeoffs but as integrated requirements for the buildings of today and tomorrow.
